Start by identifying which failure you have: a crash or black screen during launch, a missing ReShade menu, or effects distorting the game’s HUD. Those symptoms point to different checks. Confirm the game executable and graphics API, temporarily disable other overlays, then make only reversible changes. If you need a clean test, uninstall ReShade for that game before deleting or replacing files by hand.
First, separate the symptoms
Note the game and build, ReShade version, selected graphics API, overlay or monitoring tools in use, and the last change made. ReShade’s troubleshooting guide does not identify one cause that explains every crash, blank display, or overlay problem.

- Crash on startup: The game closes or reports an error before reaching its menu.
- Black or blank screen: The game appears to start, but its image is missing or unusable.
- ReShade overlay doesn’t appear: The game runs, but the injector’s own menu is absent.
- Shaders messing with HUD: The game and effects run, but effects obscure or distort interface elements.
The first three call for installation, API, or software-conflict checks. HUD artifacts are a separate rendering limitation; use the HUD section below rather than treating them as a launch failure.

Check the game executable and graphics API
Make sure ReShade was installed for the actual game executable, not a launcher or a different executable in the game folder. Then confirm the renderer the game is using and select the corresponding API in the installer. ReShade’s troubleshooting guide warns that automatic API identification can be wrong. Its official homepage lists Direct3D 9, 10, 11, and 12, OpenGL, and Vulkan, but that list does not guarantee compatibility with every game or configuration. If you are unsure which renderer the game uses, check that game’s graphics settings or support information; do not choose an API just because it is common. The troubleshooting guide recommends checking that ReShade is up to date. The official homepage displayed ReShade 6.8.0, released August 2, 2026, when accessed October 3, 2026. Availability and compatibility can differ by game and setup.
Test for conflicts with other overlays
Overlay and monitoring software can interact with an injector. ReShade’s guide names MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner; another ReShade forum guide also mentions the Steam overlay. These are possible conflicts, not confirmed causes for any particular game. ReShade troubleshooting guide · ReShade common issues guide

- Close or temporarily disable the other overlay and monitoring tools you use.
- Launch the game and check whether the original symptom changes.
- If it does, restore the tools one at a time, testing after each change to identify a repeatable conflict.
If disabling them makes no difference, restore your usual settings and move on rather than leaving unrelated tools disabled.

For a game confirmed to use DirectX 11, ReShade’s troubleshooting guide suggests trying a rename from a DXGI file to D3D11. Treat this as a reversible experiment, not a guaranteed fix: it is specific to the DirectX 11 branch and should not be applied to Vulkan, OpenGL, or other Direct3D versions. - If there is no improvement or the game behaves worse, restore the original filename.
Check the game’s anti-cheat policy before using an injector online
Some anti-cheat systems may treat an injector as untrusted, according to ReShade’s troubleshooting guide. Whether the software is permitted depends on the specific game and its current rules. Before launching an online game with ReShade installed, consult the game’s current anti-cheat policy and support information. Do not assume that a workaround or an older ReShade release is permitted; if the game blocks the injector or its rules prohibit it, remove it for that game. ReShade troubleshooting guide
Restore a clean baseline by uninstalling ReShade
If the game still crashes, stays blank, or behaves unpredictably, remove ReShade temporarily and test the game without it. The guide describes using the ReShade setup tool’s uninstall flow for the target game. If you remove it manually instead, the guide identifies the relevant ReShade INI configuration files, the API-specific injector DLL, and the reshade-shaders folder in the game directory. Use the setup tool when possible so you do not have to guess which API-specific file belongs to the injector. If removing ReShade does not change the symptom, the failure is not resolved by that test; consult the game’s support information and avoid deleting unrelated files from its installation folder.

If effects distort or cover the HUD
Post-processing operates on the displayed image, so an effect may alter interface elements as well as the game scene. That makes HUD artifacts different from a missing injector menu or a startup crash. ReShade’s guide suggests UI masks or image-detection techniques to limit effects in affected areas, but it does not describe a definitive fix that works across games and effects. Try adjusting or disabling the effect responsible for the artifact, or investigate whether its author or the game community documents a UI mask for that specific game. If the effect cannot reliably distinguish the HUD from the scene, disabling that effect may be the practical option.
