These use different redemption routes. For a promotional cosmetic code, follow the issuer’s official campaign instructions; Epic’s V-Bucks troubleshooting steps do not establish a universal redemption process for every cosmetic promotion.
Why is my Fortnite cosmetic code not working?
The most common first mistake is entering a valid code on the wrong redemption page. A V-Bucks PIN is not a general Epic retail code, and a Fortnite Gift Card adds funds to an Epic account rather than redeeming as a V-Bucks card. A promotion-specific cosmetic code may have its own issuer-provided redemption surface and eligibility rules.

| Code type | What it provides | Where to redeem | Console follow-up | Region considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Promotional cosmetic code | A cosmetic entitlement, if the campaign terms and account eligibility allow it | The promotion’s official instructions; no universal route is established | Not established for promotions generally | Check the campaign’s country and eligibility terms |
| V-Bucks card | V-Bucks | Epic’s V-Bucks card redemption flow | Yes, for PlayStation and Xbox cards, redeem the generated secondary code with the linked platform account | Card and account region restrictions may apply |
| Epic retail product code | The product or entitlement specified by the code | Epic Games Launcher or Epic Games Store website | No console secondary-code step is stated for this general flow | Check the code’s own restrictions |
| Fortnite Gift Card | Funds added to an Epic account | Its separate gift-card redemption process | Not stated in the cited guidance | Check the card’s regional availability and restrictions |
Epic describes the distinct routes for V-Bucks cards, Epic account product codes, and Fortnite Gift Cards. For a promotional cosmetic code, use the issuer’s own official instructions rather than assuming one of these flows applies.

How do I fix a Fortnite code that says invalid?
1. Check the code label and issuer
Read the card, email, or promotion page to identify whether the code is for V-Bucks, an Epic retail product, a Fortnite Gift Card, or a particular cosmetic promotion. If it is a promotional code, verify the campaign terms, supported redemption page, and account eligibility with the issuer. The available Epic guidance does not establish general expiration, one-time-use, or recovery rules for every cosmetic giveaway.
#1 Best Overall
- Redeemable on accounts in the United States and in U.S. Dollars.
- Gift card must be redeemed at EpicGames.com/redeem. This gift card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly on a console device (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, etc.)
- If you play Fortnite experiences on a console device, you need to link your Epic Games account to your console account(s) so items purchased at Fortnite.com/item-shop appear across all of your linked accounts
- Requires internet connection, valid Epic account and prior acceptance of the terms
- Redemption: Online
2. Use the Epic account you want to receive the item
For a general Epic retail product code, sign in to the intended Epic account, then use the Redeem Code control in the Epic Games Launcher or the Epic Games Store website redemption page. Do not enter a V-Bucks PIN in that general product-code form.
3. Redeem a V-Bucks card through its own flow
- Open Epic’s V-Bucks card redemption instructions and sign in to the Epic account you intend to use.
- Check the account and Fortnite display identity. Enter the card PIN without dashes.
- Select a platform shown as linked to that Epic account.
- Before confirming, review the target Epic account, selected platform, and V-Bucks balance shown in the flow. Keep the card and purchase receipt.
4. Complete the console redemption when prompted
For PlayStation or Xbox, Epic generates a secondary code after the V-Bucks card step. Redeem it through the matching linked Sony or Microsoft account. Epic says the secondary code is 12 characters for PlayStation and 25 characters for Xbox.

If the platform rejects the secondary code, retrieve it from Epic account transactions and confirm that you are using the platform account linked to the correct Epic account. If it is still rejected, contact PlayStation or Xbox support; the follow-up redemption is processed by that platform.
5. If a correctly entered V-Bucks PIN remains invalid, check activation
Epic Games Support says, “If the code is entered correctly and still shows as invalid, the card has not been properly activated.” Contact the retailer that sold the card and keep the receipt; Epic’s invalid V-Bucks card guidance identifies retailer activation as a possible cause. This advice applies to V-Bucks cards, not automatically to promotional cosmetic codes.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
- Redemption: Online
What if the code or account is from another country?
Some codes are restricted to a particular country. Epic Games Support explains: “This error means the code you are trying to redeem is restricted to a specific country and does not match the country set on your Epic Games account.” Compare the code’s region with the country on the relevant Epic or console account, and follow the support route indicated by the exact error.
Do not change your Epic account country just to redeem a V-Bucks card from another region. Epic says the account country should reflect where you live and does not support changing it simply to use a card from another country. If the message refers to the PlayStation or Microsoft account country, contact the relevant console provider; for retailer or card-region issues, contact the retailer. See Epic’s guidance on changing account country, country-restricted codes, and console-country V-Bucks errors.

What if the V-Bucks are missing or the redemption page is stuck?
V-Bucks did not appear
After redeeming the secondary code on PlayStation or Xbox, sign in to Fortnite on the same platform used for that redemption. Confirm that Fortnite is using the intended Epic account. If the balance is still missing, check whether the card or secondary code was redeemed to another Epic account, then follow Epic’s missing V-Bucks steps.
Cannot choose a platform or continue
For a V-Bucks card flow that hangs or will not advance, Epic suggests trying an incognito browser session, signing in with the correct account credentials, and disabling ad blockers. See Epic’s V-Bucks redemption troubleshooting.

What to send support
When contacting the issuer, retailer, Epic, or console provider, provide the exact error text and identify the code type. For a purchased card, retain the receipt and card packaging; do not post the full code publicly. For a promotion, include the campaign name and its official instructions. Route the issue to the party responsible for the failed step: the promotion issuer for campaign eligibility, the retailer for a possibly unactivated V-Bucks card, Epic for its account redemption flow, or the console provider for a rejected secondary code.
