Check the keyboard’s Fn or F Lock setting first; if the keys behave differently only in a particular app or input mode, check that context next.
First, identify what the keys are doing
Press one or two affected keys and note the result. The distinction points to different causes:
- They trigger icons or controls printed on the keys: The keyboard may be using its alternate command set. Look for an Fn, Fn Lock, or F Lock control.
- They work differently in only one app: That app may assign its own shortcuts. Compare the same key in another app.
- F6–F10 behave unexpectedly while entering Japanese text: On Windows 10, Microsoft Japanese IME can reserve these keys in Japanese mode when text is selected.
- They appear to do nothing: Check the keyboard’s mode and the relevant app or input context before concluding that a key has failed.
Many keyboards use the same top-row keys for both standard F1–F12 commands and alternate actions such as media or brightness controls. Which set is active depends on the keyboard design and its lock state.
Switch the keyboard’s function-key mode
Look at the key legends and consult instructions for the exact keyboard model. Fn Lock and F Lock are not universal controls, and their combinations and indicator behavior can differ.

Keyboards with Fn Lock or F Lock
Some Microsoft keyboards have a dedicated F Lock key. Pressing it switches between command sets. Microsoft says that when the F Lock indicator is off, alternate functions are active; when it is on, the keys produce standard F1–F12 commands. For Microsoft’s All-in-One Media Keyboard specifically, pressing Fn and Caps Lock together toggles Fn Lock. This shortcut is model-specific; do not assume it applies to another keyboard.

Surface keyboards
On Surface keyboards, press Fn to lock or unlock the top row in function mode. The Fn key’s light indicates that function mode is locked. Some Surface devices also support keyboard-setting changes in the Surface app. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for the special keys on Surface Keyboard.
Set F1–F12 behavior in macOS
On macOS Ventura or later, open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Function Keys, then select Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys.

On earlier macOS versions, Apple places this option in System Preferences > Keyboard. Apple’s instructions are in How to use the function keys on your Mac.
If the option is missing when you use a third-party keyboard, check with its manufacturer; Apple notes that a third-party utility may be needed to change that keyboard’s behavior. Also test the keys in another app, because an app can assign its own shortcuts.

Check the Japanese input-method exception on Windows 10
If only F6, F7, F8, F9, or F10 behave unexpectedly while you are composing Japanese text, check whether text is selected and whether Microsoft Japanese IME is in Japanese mode. Microsoft documents that those keys can be reserved for language functions in that specific Windows 10 situation. Try the key with no text selected or after leaving Japanese input mode. See Microsoft’s guidance on function keys and Japanese IME. This documented exception should not be generalized to other Windows versions or keyboards.

Find the keyboard’s make and model, then use its manufacturer’s troubleshooting and service instructions. The behavior described above does not by itself establish physical damage, and there is no single hardware-failure test that applies to every keyboard.
