OpenAI says ChatGPT for Teens adds age-appropriate protections and learning tools, but those features are not a guarantee of safety or a way for parents to monitor every conversation. An external evaluation reported by Axios found gaps in some tested crisis referrals and parental alerts; OpenAI disputed the evaluation’s methodology. The specific first-person article named in the original title could not be verified, so the concerns below are attributed to the sources that actually reported them—not to unverified conversations.
What ChatGPT for Teens is—and what OpenAI says it does
OpenAI announced ChatGPT for Teens on August 18, 2026. The company describes it as ChatGPT with teen-specific protections and learning tools, including Study Mode, homework reminders that can redirect requests for shortcuts, quizzes, and learning visualizations. OpenAI says eligible accounts identified as belonging to someone under 18—or users who state they are 13–17—are placed in the teen experience. These are the company’s descriptions of the product and its design goals, not independent evidence that the safeguards work in every case. OpenAI’s announcement

OpenAI says age prediction may use account-linked signals such as the topics discussed, patterns and times of use, and how long an account has existed. The company acknowledges that the system can be wrong. An adult assigned to the teen experience may be able to review the age category and verify their age, but OpenAI does not say that every account receives the same verification option. What parents can—and cannot—see or control
Parental controls are optional, and OpenAI says parents cannot read a teen’s conversations. The available controls should not be confused with continuous supervision or a complete lock on access. OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Teens help page

| Feature | What OpenAI says it does | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Study Hours | Can make eligible new chats start in Study Mode. | Does not block access to ChatGPT. OpenAI describes it as a flexible learning experience, not a hard parental lock. |
| Quiet Hours | Can limit access on a schedule. | The documentation does not say that parents can read conversations. |
| Safety notifications | May alert a parent to certain concerns without including conversation transcripts. | They are not real-time monitoring and may not identify every concern; OpenAI says they do not replace professional care or emergency services. |
OpenAI also says Reduce Sensitive Content is on by default for teen accounts while teen protections apply, but warns that no system is perfect and the setting cannot guarantee every response will be appropriate. OpenAI’s sensitive-content help page and parental-controls help page
What the reported external evaluation found
Axios reported on October 7, 2026, that Common Sense Media’s Youth AI Safety Institute tested more than 4,000 prompts using accounts registered to people aged 13–17. According to Axios’s account of the evaluation, the organization found that ChatGPT generally did not provide instructions facilitating suicide or self-harm, eating disorders, or sexual or romantic roleplay. It also reported that testers judged a crisis referral warranted in some instances and that the system missed more than one in four of those instances. That figure describes the evaluation’s particular set of referral-worthy cases; it is not a general error rate for all ChatGPT conversations.

Axios further reported that testers using more than a dozen newly created, parent-linked accounts could discuss suicide, self-harm, or disordered eating for up to an hour without a parental alert. The report also said testers could bypass Study Mode and Study Hours. OpenAI confirmed to Axios that leaving Study Mode during Study Hours is intentional, consistent with its description of Study Hours as a flexible learning experience rather than a hard access restriction.
These are findings attributed to Common Sense Media through Axios, not results independently reproduced here. Axios did not establish that every teen account or conversation would produce the same outcome. OpenAI told Axios: “We welcome rigorous independent evaluation, but we do not believe Common Sense Media’s testing accurately reflects how ChatGPT’s teen safeguards work in practice.” Common Sense Media Youth Safety Institute head Tom Siegel told Axios, “ChatGPT is not safe for kids to use,” while also saying the announced product had the potential to be industry-leading and that gaps remained between what was promised and current reality. The two positions describe a disagreement over the evaluation and the state of the safeguards, not a settled adjudication. Axios’s report

How to interpret the safety claims
OpenAI’s product pages establish what the company says it built, how its settings are intended to work, and some limitations it acknowledges. They do not independently measure how often the system misses risk signals. Conversely, the Axios report summarizes a specific outside test and OpenAI’s objection; without its protocol, raw data, and independent replication, its findings should not be treated as a universal forecast for every teen’s use.
OpenAI’s November 2025 Teen Safety Blueprint states the company’s policy position that “for teens, we prioritize safety ahead of privacy and freedom.” The same document says OpenAI reported more than 75,000 cybertips to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in the first half of 2025. That is a company-reported figure, not an independent audit of ChatGPT for Teens or a measure of how well its protections perform. OpenAI’s Teen Safety Blueprint
Quick Recap
Practical implications for families
- Do not treat parental controls as a way to inspect a teen’s chat history: OpenAI says parents do not receive conversation transcripts.
- Do not rely on Study Hours as a technical barrier to ChatGPT. It can guide eligible new chats into Study Mode but does not block access.
- Understand that safety notifications are limited alerts, not real-time monitoring or a substitute for professional or emergency support.
- Talk with a teen about what they use ChatGPT for and how to seek help from a trusted adult or qualified professional if a conversation raises a serious concern.
