If a website screenshot uses the wrong typeface, first determine whether the browser captured the page before its font was ready or whether the font failed to load or match the text. Wait for the page’s final capture state, check the relevant font with the browser Font Loading API, then inspect the font request and CSS if the intended face still does not appear. If no screenshot was produced and the capture log says it is waiting for fonts, diagnose a wait or browser-automation problem separately from wrong typography.
First identify which font problem you have
A completed page load is not proof that every font used in the screenshot area has loaded. The application may still be rendering, a font request may have failed, or the CSS may be asking for a family, weight, style, or character that the available face does not provide.

- No image, with a font-wait timeout: the capture is stuck or timed out at a font-readiness stage. That log identifies the current wait stage; it does not establish whether the cause is a blocked request, application lifecycle, or automation/browser defect.
- An image exists, but the letters look different: inspect the rendered page’s font selection and delivery. The browser may have used a fallback face while the intended font was unavailable or not applicable.
Playwright issue reports describe both screenshot timeouts when fonts could not load and a reported readiness hang in a particular Linux WebKit/Playwright setup. These reports are examples, not evidence that every similar symptom has the same cause: Playwright issue reports.
Wait for the right page state and font readiness
Wait for the content or application state you intend to capture, then check font readiness. document.fonts.ready resolves when font loading and related layout operations are complete for the document’s FontFaceSet. If the screenshot depends on a known face, explicitly request that face with document.fonts.load() using the relevant CSS font specification and representative text. These checks are useful, but do not alone prove that every element rendered in the preferred face or that every needed glyph came from the intended font. See MDN’s FontFaceSet.ready and FontFaceSet.load() references.

Playwright example
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.getByRole('main').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.evaluate(async () => {
await document.fonts.ready;
const faces = await document.fonts.load(
'400 16px "Example Sans"',
'Screenshot sample text'
);
if (faces.length === 0) {
throw new Error('The requested font face was not returned');
}
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'capture.png' });
Replace url, the main-content locator, family, weight, size, and sample text with the actual page and capture requirements. The returned face list is a useful signal, not a universal guarantee of the rendered face: inspect the affected element and glyph coverage when exact typography matters. The example follows the browser font-readiness APIs; Playwright’s guidance favors assertions about the expected page state over relying on a generic network-quiet condition. See Playwright assertions and page.goto.
Inspect font requests, CSS, and glyph coverage
- Open the page in browser developer tools and inspect the affected text’s computed
font-family,font-weight, andfont-style. - Find the matching
@font-facedeclaration and confirm that its family, weight, and style cover the values requested by the element. - Inspect the font request’s status and response, and check the console for loading errors. If the browser reports a blocked request, investigate the site’s cross-origin and content-security policies rather than assuming a particular cause.
- Check whether the font contains the characters in the screenshot. A face may load successfully yet not supply a particular glyph or text subset.
- Review the CSS
font-displaysetting. It influences how text is shown while a face is loading; it does not repair a failed request or an incorrect face declaration. See MDN’s @font-face and font-display references.
Do not replace the site’s font as a first step. Establish whether the intended face is correctly configured and delivered, or whether capture simply happened before it was ready.

Handle stuck waits and timing workarounds carefully
Playwright discourages using networkidle as a general test-readiness signal. A quiet network does not prove that the specific face used by the captured text has rendered. Prefer waiting for the relevant content and checking the font needed for that content. See the Playwright navigation documentation.

- Clear visuals. Fluid motion: A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms MPRT deliver smooth, tear‑free motion across work, gaming, and streaming for clearer, more fluid viewing.

- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
Bypassing a font wait may help determine whether the hang is in the wait path, but it does not make a font load or typography settle. Use a bypassed capture only when the fallback appearance is acceptable—for example, as a clearly labeled failure artifact—not as proof that the intended font rendered.
Keep screenshot comparisons reproducible
Use a consistent browser, browser version, operating system, and installed-font environment for visual regression baselines. Rendering can vary across platforms and environments; Playwright specifically notes that host operating system, version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors can affect browser rendering. Its screenshot assertions retry until consecutive screenshots match, which can help with visual stability, but stability alone does not verify that the preferred typeface loaded. See Playwright visual comparisons.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| No screenshot; log says it is waiting for fonts | Font readiness wait, failed font request, application state, or automation/browser behavior | Inspect font requests and reproduce with the exact browser and automation versions. Do not treat the wait-stage log as a root-cause diagnosis. |
| Screenshot completed with a fallback typeface | Font request, CSS face matching, or font readiness before capture | Check computed styles, the matching @font-face, and request status; wait for the relevant face before capture. |
| Only some characters look wrong | Glyph or subset coverage | Check whether the requested face includes the affected characters and whether the page has a suitable face for them. |
| Capture wait never settles although the page looks loaded | Wait condition or browser-specific automation issue | Use assertions for the intended page state, inspect font status, and test a controlled reproduction in the exact environment. |
| Visual snapshots vary between machines | Browser, OS, browser version, or available fonts differ | Standardize the comparison environment; separately verify the intended font face. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does `document.fonts.ready` guarantee that my preferred font appears in the screenshot?
No. It indicates font-set readiness, but you still need to verify the relevant face, CSS matching, and glyph coverage for the text being captured.
Should I wait for `networkidle` before taking a screenshot?
Not as proof that the needed font rendered. Wait for the page state you intend to capture and check font readiness for the relevant text.
