Square Enix identifies installation validation as the first step for crashes, failed launches, and black screens. If the files are sound, test the launcher’s fullscreen and windowed modes, then install FF13Fix for frame-pacing and controller-scan stutter. Only after those reversible steps should you consider the 4GB/Large Address Aware patch, DXVK, ReShade, or other modifications.
This guide applies to the Windows Steam release of FINAL FANTASY XIII, released on 9 October 2014. Steam lists fullscreen support and a 60 FPS capability; the Steam client has required Windows 10 or later since 1 January 2024.

Use this order to isolate the problem
Change one thing at a time and launch the game after each change. That gives you a clear cause-and-effect record and makes it possible to undo the last change when a symptom changes.

1. Verify the Steam installation first
File verification is the publisher’s recommended response when the Windows version crashes, will not start, or displays a black screen. Steam compares the installed files with its expected versions and replaces files that are missing or damaged. It does not erase your whole installation, and it is the safest first diagnostic because it does not add a wrapper or modify the executable.

- Open the Steam client and select Library.
- Right-click FINAL FANTASY XIII in your game list.
- Choose Properties.
- Open Local Files (Steam may show a similarly named Installed Files section in newer layouts).
- Select Verify integrity of game files. Square Enix’s older wording is Verify integrity of game cache.
- Wait for Steam to finish. If it downloads replacements, allow that process to complete before launching.
Launch once with no mods, injected DLLs, ReShade files, or other overlays. If the game starts after verification, add optional changes back individually rather than restoring an entire mod folder at once. If verification reports no changes but the same error remains, continue to the display-configuration test instead of repeatedly running the check.
2. Fix a black screen or failed launch with a simple display setup
A black screen can be caused by a display-mode problem rather than a damaged installation. Use the game’s official launcher and test its available screen settings before adding any community files.
Test windowed mode
Open the launcher, select a windowed configuration, and start the game. Windowed mode is a diagnostic: it avoids some fullscreen hand-off and refresh-rate interactions. You can return to fullscreen after confirming that the game reaches its menus.
Test fullscreen mode
If windowed mode works, close the game, choose fullscreen in the launcher, and try again. Make only this one change. A successful fullscreen launch points to a mode or refresh-rate interaction, while a failure in both modes suggests that you should return to file verification and a clean, unmodified installation.

Do not combine a display-mode change with a wrapper, texture pack, or executable patch on the same attempt. Keeping the launcher settings simple makes the result useful for the next diagnostic step.
3. Reduce stutter and uneven frame pacing with FF13Fix
FF13Fix is a community fix whose documented goals include removing the game’s frame pacer, addressing stutter caused by controllers being scanned every second, enabling optional vibration and frame-rate controls, adding triple buffering, and using the desktop monitor refresh rate in fullscreen. It is aimed at stutter and frame-pacing behavior, not at replacing Steam’s file check for a damaged installation.
Install the documented files
- Download a release of FF13Fix from its project page.
- Open the game’s installation directory and navigate to
FINAL FANTASY XIII\white_data\prog\win\bin. - Copy
d3d9.dllandFF13Fix.inifrom the FF13Fix release into thatbinfolder. - Keep the original downloaded files somewhere safe so you can remove the fix cleanly if a new problem appears.
- Launch the game and check movement in an area where the hitching was obvious.
The current documented installation uses exactly those two files in the FF13 bin directory. If the game stops launching after installation, remove the added d3d9.dll and FF13Fix.ini, verify the Steam files again, and test the unmodified game before trying another option.
Understand what FF13Fix changes
- Frame pacing: the fix removes the built-in frame pacer, which is intended to address uneven delivery of frames rather than raise the game’s advertised ceiling.
- Controller scanning: it targets pauses produced when the game scans for controllers every second.
- Buffering: triple buffering is available as an option and can alter memory use, so treat it as a separate test.
- Fullscreen refresh: the fix can use the desktop monitor refresh rate in fullscreen.
- Input and vibration: optional controls are exposed through the fix’s configuration.
Steam lists an XInput controller as the recommended controller type for this game. FF13Fix’s controller-scan correction removes hotplug support, so connect the controller before opening the game. If you plug it in after the title has started, the game may not detect it until you close the game, connect the controller, and relaunch.

4. Match the controller to the stutter symptom
Periodic hitching that coincides with a controller being connected, disconnected, or polled is a different problem from a crash during startup. Use an XInput device, connect it before launch, and test with FF13Fix installed as described above. Disconnect other gamepads and input emulators while testing so there is only one controller path.
- Exit the game completely.
- Connect the XInput controller directly to the PC.
- Wait for Windows and Steam to show that the device is available.
- Start FINAL FANTASY XIII and reproduce the area where stutter occurred.
- If the hitching remains, disable optional FF13Fix features one at a time in its configuration, beginning with triple buffering, and retest.
Because hotplug support is removed for this specific scan fix, do not use controller unplugging and reconnecting as a test while the game is running. That action changes the conditions the fix expects.
5. Address memory-related crashes with the 4GB/Large Address Aware patch
The 4GB/Large Address Aware patch is most relevant when crashes occur with triple buffering, 4K-or-higher resolutions, DXVK, ReShade, or high-definition texture and model modifications. It changes the game executable, so it is more invasive than file verification or removing a DLL. Use it only after testing a clean installation and recording which configuration triggers the crash.

Preserve the original executable
- Open
FINAL FANTASY XIII\white_data\prog\win\bin. - Locate
ffxiiiimg.exe. - Make an untouched backup copy in the same folder and name that copy
untouched.exe, as the FF13Fix documentation specifies. - Keep another backup outside the game directory if you have enough storage; this protects the original if a later tool overwrites files.
- Apply the 4GB/Large Address Aware patch to the original executable, following the patch tool’s own instructions.
Do not rename the patched executable as the backup. The purpose of untouched.exe is to preserve a known-clean reference while the working ffxiiiimg.exe receives the address-awareness change.

When to remove the patch
If the game will not launch after patching, restore the original executable from untouched.exe, remove any related wrapper or mod files, and run Steam verification. If the crash happens only with a particular resolution, buffering option, wrapper, or HD mod, first reproduce it without that extra component; the patch is not a substitute for identifying a conflicting add-on.
6. Treat DXVK, ReShade, and mods as controlled variables
Graphics wrappers and injected effects can change both rendering and memory behavior. The FF13Fix documentation notes a DXVK workaround for Windows users with AMD Navi cards. It also specifies a naming arrangement that lets DXVK and FF13Fix coexist.

- Start from a verified game installation and make sure FF13Fix is working by itself.
- Use the x86 Windows build of DXVK.
- Rename DXVK’s
d3d9.dlltodxvk.dll. - Keep FF13Fix’s
d3d9.dllin the game’sFINAL FANTASY XIII\white_data\prog\win\bindirectory. - Add the DXVK file according to the FF13Fix documentation, then launch and test.
The two DLLs have different names deliberately: FF13Fix remains the file loaded as d3d9.dll, while the renamed DXVK library is available to it as dxvk.dll. If the game fails after this change, remove the DXVK file first and verify the game. Do not troubleshoot DXVK, ReShade, an HD texture pack, and an executable patch simultaneously.

Remove overlays and injected files during diagnosis
Temporarily disable overlays and remove third-party DLLs from the game directory when isolating a crash. A clean launch establishes whether the base game is responsible. Restore one component at a time only after the clean configuration works, and keep a short note of each filename and change.

7. Choose the remedy by symptom and risk

8. Clean up after a failed modification
- Close the game and Steam.
- Remove third-party DLLs, ReShade files, and mod files that were added for testing.
- If you patched the executable, restore the original using
untouched.exe. - Run Steam’s file verification again.
- Launch with the official launcher in a simple display mode and no controller hotplugging.
- Confirm that the base game works before reinstalling FF13Fix or any other component.
This sequence matters because Steam verification can restore official files, but it cannot explain or safely manage every third-party file placed beside the game. Removing those files yourself prevents a stale wrapper from continuing to load after verification.
9. When to contact Square Enix support
Escalate to Square Enix support when the publisher’s validation step does not resolve a crash, failed start, or black screen and the game still fails in a clean configuration. Include the symptom, whether windowed and fullscreen modes were tested, whether Steam replaced any files, and whether the failure occurs before or after the launcher. Also state whether the controller was connected before launch and whether the executable remained unmodified.
That information distinguishes an installation problem from a display-mode issue, controller-scan behavior, or a configuration involving wrappers and mods. Reproduce the failure without third-party files before reporting it so support can evaluate the supported game installation.

- Verify the installation before adding fixes.
- Test windowed and fullscreen modes separately in the official launcher.
- Install FF13Fix only by placing its documented
d3d9.dllandFF13Fix.iniin the FF13bindirectory. - Connect an XInput controller before launching; do not rely on hotplugging with FF13Fix’s controller-scan fix.
- Back up
