If an FFmpeg-generated video is silent in an OBS YouTube loop, find the first point where its audio disappears before changing encoding options. Check the file outside OBS, then the OBS source and mixer, then OBS output routing, and finally the YouTube test stream. Each step narrows the fault to a different part of the path.
Trace the audio signal from the file to YouTube
Use the same clip you plan to loop, and check each boundary in order. Do not assume that silence on YouTube means FFmpeg needs a different codec: the file may be silent, OBS may not be playing the right audio track, the source may be muted, or the audio may fail to reach the output or YouTube.

- File: Does the exact output file play with sound outside OBS?
- OBS source: Is OBS playing the intended file or playlist, and does the selected source track carry audio?
- OBS mixer and output: Does the source meter move, and does the audio reach the recording or stream output?
- YouTube: Does a controlled test stream contain sound, and does the stream health indicate a delivery issue?
1. Confirm the generated file contains audible audio
Open the exact FFmpeg output that OBS is using in a media player and play it. Confirm that sound is audible, not merely that the video plays. If it is silent outside OBS, the problem is upstream of OBS.
At that point, investigate the FFmpeg command and the file’s actual audio stream layout: the input, output mapping, codec, and muxing may all matter. A precise command-line correction cannot be identified without the command and file details. Do not apply a generic -map option or codec change by guesswork.

2. Check the OBS source and its audio track
Built-in Media Source
In the Media Source properties, confirm that the intended file is selected and playback is active. OBS Media Source supports common video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Its Loop property controls whether playback starts again after it finishes. Check that the source is not muted.
VLC Video source or playlist
If the loop uses an OBS VLC Video source, verify that the correct file or playlist is selected and that playback is active. Check Audio Track: its default is track 1, which may not be the track carrying sound in a multi-track file. Loop Playlist defaults to On. VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

3. Use the OBS mixer meter to locate the break
Start playback and watch the source’s audio meter in the OBS mixer. OBS Project’s Audio Mixer Guide, dated 2026-04-03, advises: “Most of the time, you want to keep a close eye on the meters.”

- The meter moves: Audio has reached the source’s mixer input. Check the mute state, listen through OBS audio monitoring, and inspect track assignment and output routing if the recording or stream remains silent.
To listen through OBS, use the source’s Monitor control and the configured monitoring device. If you need to distinguish a monitoring issue from an output issue, record a short session and listen to the resulting file before going live; OBS recommends recording and checking the result as part of its audio guidance.

4. Inspect output routing and capture-device conflicts
If the mixer shows signal but the recording or stream does not, review the audio track assignment and the output settings used for that recording or stream. A moving source meter alone does not establish that audio is reaching the selected output.
If the scene also uses Audio Input Capture or Audio Output Capture, check whether the same device is selected globally under Settings > Audio. OBS warns that capturing a device in a scene while also selecting it globally can cause echo. This is a capture-device caveat, not evidence that a silent media file has an encoding problem.

5. Test the YouTube delivery path
Make a brief private, unlisted, or otherwise controlled test that matches your intended workflow. Include audio and video similar to the planned stream, then check the result on YouTube and monitor stream health. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Its recommended stereo settings are 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. These are encoder recommendations, not proof of why a particular loop is silent; first establish whether audio reaches OBS output and the test stream.
