A laboratory reactor developed by a Seoul National University team uses electricity to activate oxygen and make lactones and epoxides—chemical feedstocks used in plastics and other materials. Its key innovation is controlling the pH immediately around the electrodes, where conditions can differ sharply from the solution measured in bulk. The work demonstrates a way to influence product formation, not a plant that makes finished plastic.
How oxygen and electricity make the chemical building blocks
In organic electrosynthesis, electricity drives reactions that produce organic compounds. The Seoul National University team studied oxygen-atom transfer: oxygen gas is activated electrochemically, and an oxygen atom is transferred to an organic molecule. One example is the Baeyer–Villiger oxidation, which inserts oxygen into a ketone to form an ester, including cyclic esters called lactones.

The researchers report that oxygen reduction at the cathode produces reactive oxygen species that initiate oxygen transfer. Hydrogen peroxide formed during the process is converted back into reactive oxygen species at the anode, linking the roles of the two electrodes. Isotope tracing found that the oxygen incorporated in the product came from oxygen gas rather than water, according to Seoul National University’s research highlight.
This differs from conventional Baeyer–Villiger oxidation, which often uses reactive oxidants such as peroxyacids. Those reagents can bring handling and byproduct-treatment challenges. The university describes the new reaction as running at room temperature and atmospheric pressure without separately added peroxide oxidants; that does not establish a cost, energy, or environmental advantage over industrial alternatives.

Why pH near an electrode matters
The pH measured in a vessel is a bulk average. At an electrode surface, reactions can generate or consume protons faster than they move away, creating a local pH that is very different from the bulk solution. That local environment can affect the supply of reactive oxygen species, the chemical form of the starting material, and whether products remain stable.
For the studied system, SNU reported a nominally neutral bulk solution while estimating local conditions of about pH 11 near the cathode and pH 2.5 near the anode. These are estimates for this particular setup, not general values for electrochemical reactors. A university review of more than 600 related papers published since 2010 found that about 89% involved proton transfer at at least one electrode, underscoring why local proton conditions can matter across electrosynthesis.

How the reactor controls the local reaction environment
The design places the electrodes close together and flows electrolyte through the narrow gap. The intended effect is for acidic conditions near the anode and alkaline conditions near the cathode to counterbalance one another. In this approach, electrode spacing and flow are not merely mechanical details: they help shape the environment where the chemistry occurs.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Electrode spacing: SNU College of Engineering reported that reducing the gap from 20 mm to 4 mm raised the production rate by approximately 2.2-fold in the tested system.
- Electrolyte flow: Across the lowest and highest flow rates tested, the reported production rate differed by approximately 14-fold. The university summary does not give the absolute rates in that comparison.
- Product selectivity: Applying the local-pH control approach raised selectivity for the target product from approximately 16% to approximately 97%, according to the college’s 2026 report. Selectivity describes how much of the product mixture went toward the desired product; it is not the same as yield or production rate.
These figures are experimental results reported by Seoul National University College of Engineering in 2026, not independent industrial benchmarks. They show that reactor conditions can affect the reaction, but do not by themselves reveal how the process would perform at larger scale.

- Space Saving Profile - The Highboy bin is perfect for tight or compact spaces; its narrow tall design and sleek shape make it ideal for the kitchen, garage, office, or other areas where space is limited while still large enough for household recycling.
- Easy Bag Removal - This indoor/outdoor recycle bin was designed with a tapered shape and vented sides to make it simple to remove a trash bag. Eliminate the struggle to remove a full bag of waste. The recommended bag size for ideal use is 33 gallons.
- Dustpan Edge - Sweep debris directly into the slim trash can with a dustpan edge that eliminates the need for a separate dustpan, making it easy and efficient to clean. The waste container is also made with smooth plastic to ensure easy cleaning.
- Easy to Carry - Designed with you in mind, the Highboy durable plastic recycling can has sturdy pass-through handles on top and a hand groove on the bottom. This makes moving the heavy-duty recycling container easier than ever.
- Multipack of 2 – The Highboy comes in a pack of 2, making it the perfect for kitchen, patio, garage, or office recycling bin. This is an excellent slim trash can for business or commercial use and pairs well with United Solutions’ Highboy Waste Container.
What products the team demonstrated
Lactones, including a precursor to polycaprolactone
The team synthesized lactones from 18 ketone compounds. It obtained ε-caprolactone at an 82% yield under its established conditions, as reported by Seoul National University College of Engineering in 2026. ε-Caprolactone is a feedstock for polycaprolactone, which is used in materials including surgical sutures and drug-delivery systems. SNU also identifies lactones as feedstocks for biodegradable plastics and polyurethanes.
Epoxides for resins and other materials
The researchers also produced epoxides from six alkene substrates, according to Seoul National University’s research highlight. Epoxides are used as feedstocks for adhesives, coatings, and epoxy resins, including resins used in electronic materials. This demonstration suggests the design principle may apply beyond the lactone example; six substrates do not establish broad commercial applicability.

What the results establish—and what they do not
The study establishes a laboratory method for using oxygen and electricity to make chemical intermediates, with local pH treated as a controllable reactor-design variable. It does not directly turn plastic waste into new plastic or produce finished plastic parts. The reported rates, selectivity, and yields are laboratory findings, not proof of production-scale economics or performance.
Seoul National University says process optimization and production-scale validation are still needed before commercial application. Its university accounts do not provide detailed energy consumption, costs, long-duration durability, or scale-up results. Pairing the process with renewable electricity is a possible future pathway mentioned by SNU, not a measured carbon-intensity result.
