A screenshot’s pixel width and a page’s CSS viewport width are different measurements. The browser viewport controls layout in CSS pixels; device scale factor and screenshot scale determine how those CSS pixels map to image pixels. Mobile emulation, the page’s viewport meta tag, and capture mode can also affect what you see. Check these layers separately before changing the requested width.
First, identify which width is wrong
Compare the width you requested with both the page’s layout viewport and the saved image dimensions. A mismatch in image pixels does not necessarily mean the browser laid out the page at the wrong CSS width.
- CSS viewport width: the layout width available to page content, measured in CSS pixels.
- Screenshot raster width: the number of pixels across the saved image. It may be larger than the CSS width when device-pixel scaling is used.
- Capture extent: the region represented in the image: the visible viewport, a clipped region, or the full scrollable page.
Playwright documents viewport, screenshot, and capture settings in its Page API. Its API parameters documentation describes viewport, device-scale, and mobile settings.
Check the browser’s CSS viewport
In Playwright, inspect the viewport configured when you create the browser context and any later call to page.setViewportSize(). A later setting can override the viewport you thought you had requested. Also check device presets and configuration order: emulation can supply a viewport, while subsequent test code may replace it.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Playwright’s emulation guide covers device emulation and viewport overrides. Record the final effective settings rather than relying only on the preset name or an earlier configuration value.
Compare CSS width with screenshot pixels
Check deviceScaleFactor and the screenshot’s scale option. A device-scale screenshot can use device pixels, so its raster width may exceed the CSS viewport width. Playwright’s CSS scale produces one image pixel per CSS pixel. Thus, an image twice as wide numerically as the viewport is a possible consequence of a scale factor of two—not proof that the page used the wrong layout width.

For a diagnosis, write down the CSS viewport width, device scale factor, screenshot scale, and saved image width. Do not infer the viewport from image dimensions alone.
Check mobile emulation and viewport metadata
Playwright’s isMobile setting controls whether the page’s meta viewport tag is taken into account. On narrow-screen browsers, without suitable viewport metadata, the page may use a wider virtual layout viewport and scale down to fit. The usual responsive declaration is:

Check what part of the page was captured
A viewport-only capture represents the visible viewport. A full-page capture extends across scrollable page content; a clipped capture can define an output region distinct from the viewport. These options change the image’s extent and can make its dimensions differ from the visible viewport’s dimensions.

Verify whether your code requests a viewport screenshot, full-page capture, or clip rectangle. Playwright documents screenshot options in its Page API; Puppeteer documents clipping and full-page capture in its ScreenshotOptions reference.
A practical diagnosis checklist
- Record the browser and version, automation library and version, requested viewport dimensions, device scale factor, mobile setting, viewport meta content, screenshot scale, and resulting image dimensions.
- Inspect the effective Playwright context viewport and any later
page.setViewportSize()call. Check which settings a device preset supplied and whether later code overrode them. - Compare the CSS viewport width to the saved image width. Account for device scale factor and screenshot scale before concluding that the layout width is wrong.
- Inspect
isMobileand the page’s viewport meta tag if responsive layout behaves unexpectedly. - Check whether full-page or clipping options changed the captured extent.
- If the mismatch remains, share the configuration, relevant HTML head, requested viewport, and resulting image dimensions when asking for help. Those details are needed to isolate the cause.
Common symptoms and likely checks
| Symptom | What to inspect |
|---|---|
| The image is wider than the requested viewport, but the layout looks right | Compare the CSS viewport against device scale factor and screenshot scale; the raster image may use device pixels. |
| The page lays out as if it has a wider screen | Check the effective viewport, mobile emulation and viewport meta declaration. |
| The screenshot dimensions differ from the visible browser area | Check for full-page capture or a clip rectangle. |
| A preset appears to have the wrong dimensions | Inspect the final context viewport and later overrides, rather than assuming the preset remained in effect. |
