It can arise at different stages—from opening an unavailable or unexpected source to demuxing or decoding media—so there is no safe, universal fix for a Gurbani live stream without its protocol, command, FFmpeg version and surrounding log. Preserve the evidence, identify where processing fails, inspect the input with ffprobe, then change one thing that the evidence supports.
First, capture the failure accurately
Before changing flags or the source URL, save the exact invocation and complete output. FFmpeg’s -report option writes the command line and log to a report file and enables debug-level logging. The file is named with the program name and a timestamp in the current directory. See the FFmpeg documentation.

ffmpeg -report -i "INPUT" -f null -Replace INPUT with the real source. This is a diagnostic starting point, not a command tested against a particular Gurbani stream. Keep the FFmpeg banner, version/build information, and lines both before and after the error. Before sharing a report or URL, remove stream keys, passwords and other private tokens.

The surrounding message matters more than the generic error alone. An error while opening the input points to a different investigation than Error while decoding stream #0:N after the input has opened. In the latter, N is a stream index in that invocation; use probe output to learn whether it is audio or video and which codec FFmpeg detected.
FFmpeg processes inputs through distinct stages, including input handling, demuxing, stream selection and decoding. The same error wording has appeared in different circumstances, so it does not by itself tell you whether the endpoint, transport, format, media bytes, mapping or decoder is at fault. Inspect the input with ffprobe
Use ffprobe to see what format and streams FFmpeg recognizes:
ffprobe -hide_banner -v warning -show_error -show_format -show_streams "INPUT"The ffprobe documentation describes -show_error, -show_format and -show_streams. Note when you ran the probe: live sources can change or become available only while a sender is active. If possible, check whether another client can play the same source at that moment.

Check the source and transport
Verify the endpoint and response
- Confirm the URL or capture device is the intended one and is currently available to the machine running FFmpeg.
- If the input is HLS, check that the response is the expected playlist and that the referenced media segments are accessible from the FFmpeg host. An error on an HLS URL does not prove the local command is wrong; a historical FFmpeg-user mailing-list report documents the error on an HLS input but does not establish a general cause.
- For a live sender, establish whether it was already transmitting when the receiver connected. The error text alone cannot distinguish a timing issue from other causes.
Use reconnect options only for a matching HTTP problem
For HTTP inputs, options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error and reconnect_on_http_error address specified reconnect conditions. They do not validate incoming media, fix an incorrect URL or repair a server response that is not media. Check the protocol and the installed build’s documentation before adding one; the FFmpeg protocol documentation covers these options. Reconnection flags are not a general fix for malformed playlists or segments.
Confirm the format and map only detected streams
Compare the format and stream list from ffprobe with what the command assumes. Do not presume every source has both audio and video, or reuse stream indices without checking them. FFmpeg’s -map option controls which streams go to an output; explicit mapping can address a confirmed selection mistake. Data and attachment streams are not automatically selected.

Do not add -f to force a demuxer just because FFmpeg reports invalid data. The format option may be needed for raw input, but use it only when the input is known to be raw and its format is known. See the FFmpeg documentation.
Make one evidence-based change at a time
- Correct an endpoint only if you have confirmed it is wrong or unavailable.
- If the sender was not transmitting when the receiver connected, test again when it is active.
- Correct a format assumption only when the source is known to have that format.
- Adjust
-maponly when probe output shows the intended stream and the current mapping is wrong. - Add a reconnect option only when the logs show a corresponding HTTP connection condition and the option applies to the installed build.
After each change, save a new full report and compare it with the previous one. Avoid broad error-ignoring flags as a supposed repair: suppressing diagnostics can conceal the fault and make a live broadcast harder to troubleshoot.

What information is needed for a stream-specific fix?
The title “Gurbani live stream” does not identify the provider, input URL, protocol, encoder, FFmpeg version, command or log. Without those details, prescribing a format override, reconnect flag, stream map or re-encode would be guesswork. To get useful help, provide:
- the complete FFmpeg command, with credentials and private tokens removed;
- the exact FFmpeg version and build information;
- the sanitized URL or at least the input protocol and source type;
- the full log around the failure, including whether it occurs opening the input or decoding a numbered stream;
- the
ffprobeoutput and the time the probe was run.
