If your YouTube stream stops when you close SSH, first check whether the VPS is still running. If it is, the encoder may have been tied to the terminal: run it inside tmux to survive an SSH disconnect, or manage it with systemd if you need automatic recovery after an encoder crash or reboot. If the provider stopped the VPS, neither tool can bring it back; check the provider’s notice and terms.
“Idle session suspension” can mean several different things: an SSH session ended, the encoder exited, the VM rebooted, the provider stopped the VM, or YouTube stopped receiving a healthy feed. The fix depends on which happened. The VPS provider and its policy are not identified here, so do not assume that an idle-use rule caused the outage without checking its console or notice.

Diagnose what actually went offline
- Note when the stream stopped. In YouTube Studio, open the matching stream in Live Control Room and check its health and any error message. A running encoder process does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy feed. YouTube explains encoder setup and the server URL and stream key workflow in its live-stream encoder help.
- Check the VPS itself. Use the provider console to see whether the VM is running. If you can connect, check whether the encoder process still exists. If the VM is unavailable, look for a suspension or reboot notice from the provider.
- Match the symptom to the likely cause.
- VPS running, SSH disconnected, encoder still running: the terminal connection ended; use
tmuxfor the next run. - VPS running, encoder stopped: inspect its exit output and logs; use a service manager such as
systemdif unattended process recovery is needed. - VPS rebooted: configure the service to start at boot.
- VPS stopped or suspended: ask the provider why and check the plan’s resource, idle-use and acceptable-use terms.
- Encoder running, but YouTube reports an unhealthy or offline stream: investigate encoder output and outbound network connectivity.
- VPS running, SSH disconnected, encoder still running: the terminal connection ended; use
Keep the failure categories separate. tmux keeps a remote terminal session available after a disconnect; it does not restart an encoder that exits, recover a reboot, repair a network outage or override a provider action. systemd can supervise a process but cannot run a VM that the provider has stopped.

Keep the encoder running after SSH disconnects with tmux
Use tmux on the VPS—not just on your local computer—when the problem is that closing SSH ends the terminal where you launched the encoder. The tmux(1) manual says a session survives accidental disconnection, such as an SSH timeout, and intentional detaching.

- Connect to the VPS and create a named session:
tmux new -s youtube. - Start your existing encoder command inside that session.
- Detach without stopping the session: press Ctrl-b, then d.
- Close SSH. The tmux session and encoder can continue while the tmux server and VPS remain alive.
- Reconnect later and check for the session with
tmux ls. Reattach withtmux attach -t youtube.
If tmux ls shows no session, or the session exists but the encoder has stopped, tmux alone has not solved the problem: inspect the encoder output and use process supervision if required.
Use systemd for encoder crashes and reboot recovery
A systemd service is a better fit than an interactive shell for an encoder that should run unattended. Its service configuration can restart a process when specified failure conditions occur. For example, Restart=on-failure covers qualifying non-zero exits, signals and timeouts; it is not a guarantee against every stop condition. See the systemd.service(5) manual for the installed version’s behavior.

- Use the encoder’s absolute executable path, the correct working directory, and a service account with the necessary permissions.
- Choose a restart policy that matches the process and test the restart behavior deliberately.
- Enable the service at boot if it should start after a VPS reboot.
- Review service logs when it fails rather than repeatedly restarting a misconfigured command.
- Protect the YouTube stream key. Do not put it in a public script or repository; rotate it in YouTube Studio if it has been exposed.
A restart rule cannot undo an administrative stop or revive a suspended VM. If the provider has stopped the instance, resolve the provider-side issue or move the workload to a host whose terms permit it.
If the encoder is running but YouTube shows the stream offline
Check the specific Live Control Room health status and error before changing encoder settings. YouTube’s live-stream error guidance covers ingest and format problems, including H.264 video, AAC audio, bitrate, audio/video stream count and keyframe frequency. Confirm that the encoder is sending to YouTube’s server URL with the intended stream key, and inspect its own logs for output or connection errors.

YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder health and CPU load, testing outbound connectivity, and contacting the internet provider if the connection is problematic. On a VPS, also ask the host whether the instance has an outbound bandwidth limit or a network incident. A terminal multiplexer cannot fix a broken ingest connection.
Check provider suspension and YouTube archive limits
When the VPS is stopped
Read the provider’s event notice and the terms for your exact plan. Check whether continuous encoding is allowed and whether resource or idle-use rules apply. No provider-specific policy can be inferred from the fact that the stream stopped. A keepalive packet, tmux session or systemd restart rule cannot override a provider-side suspension.

When the replay matters
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its encoder help. Do not assume an uninterrupted stream longer than that will be archived. Keep a separate recording or use shorter streams if that suits the channel’s workflow.
