This works best when every file has matching streams, codecs, and time bases, and when duration metadata is accurate. FFmpeg then sends a continuous encoded stream to the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown in your YouTube Live Control Room.
What you need before you start
- A computer that can remain awake and connected for the broadcast, with FFmpeg installed and enough CPU or hardware-encoding capacity for your chosen output.
- Local sermon video files stored in a stable directory. Do not rely on a removable drive or a workstation that may sleep during a long broadcast.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and access to Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup explains how to create or select a stream and connect an encoder: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- A reliable wired or otherwise stable internet connection with upload capacity above the stream’s bitrate, including headroom for other network traffic.
This method re-encodes the playlist as it streams. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer does not normalize mismatched source files automatically, so check file compatibility before configuring the live output.

Check whether the sermon files can be concatenated
The concat demuxer expects every file in the list to have the same streams, codecs, and time bases. In practical terms, check that videos have compatible video and audio tracks, codecs, frame characteristics, and audio layouts. A sermon with no audio track, for example, may not fit cleanly alongside files with audio.
Duration metadata matters too: FFmpeg uses each file’s duration to place the next one on the timeline. Incorrect duration information, such as metadata from a truncated file or an inaccurate duration estimate, can create timestamp gaps or artifacts. Different audio and video lengths can also produce gaps as timestamps are adjusted across the playlist. If the files do not match, normalize them first to compatible dimensions, frame rate, codecs, audio layout, and time base, or use an FFmpeg filter-based concat workflow that re-encodes the inputs. That alternative requires more setup and processing; test it with your actual files rather than assuming a concat list will resolve their differences.
Create the FFconcat playlist
- Put the source files in a directory that will remain available throughout the broadcast.
- Create a plain-text file named
sermon-playlist.ffconcatin that directory. Its first line must be exactlyffconcat version 1.0, with no leading text or byte-order mark. - List the sermon files in the intended playback order. For example:
ffconcat version 1.0 file 'sermon-01.mp4' file 'sermon-02.mp4' file 'sermon-03.mp4' - Save the list as plain text. Relative paths are simplest when the playlist and files are in a controlled working directory. Paths containing spaces or special characters need appropriate quoting or escaping.
By default, the concat demuxer applies safe-path checks. It accepts relative paths made from portable letters, digits, period, underscore, and hyphen, but rejects absolute paths, protocol-like paths, and path components starting with a period. If absolute paths are necessary, FFmpeg provides -safe 0 to relax these checks. Use it only with a playlist you trust; omit it when safe relative paths work.

Choose YouTube output settings
Use the exact ingest server URL and stream key displayed for the selected stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Do not rely on an endpoint copied from an old guide. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection. Its encoder guidance also lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a two-second keyframe interval, with a four-second maximum. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for the current table and settings.

These are recommendations, not guarantees that your connection can sustain them. Select output quality based on source quality, encoder capacity, and stable upload bandwidth. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% upload headroom; that is a useful planning margin, not a measurement of your particular connection.

For an H.264 output with a fixed frame rate, set the GOP/keyframe interval to two seconds’ worth of frames. For example, at 30 fps that means 60 frames. Match -g and -keyint_min to that frame count, and disable scene-cut keyframes if you need a fixed interval. Use a bitrate, maximum rate, and buffer appropriate to the resolution and frame rate; the template below deliberately leaves those values for you to set.

The concat playlist is the input, and -stream_loop -1 tells FFmpeg to repeat that input indefinitely. The FFmpeg documentation describes -stream_loop and its infinite value. Keep the loop option before the input it applies to. The -re option paces file input for live output; confirm its behavior with your installed FFmpeg build and rehearse the complete setup.
The example uses -safe 0 for convenience if the list needs paths that fail the default checks. Remove it when using safe relative paths. The command encodes video as H.264 and audio as AAC, but exact options may need adjustment for your FFmpeg version, available encoders, source resolution, fixed output frame rate, audio-less files, and YouTube ingest endpoint. If the sources do not have compatible streams, changing this command alone may not make concat-demuxer input reliable; normalize the files or build a filter-based concat pipeline.

The stream key is like a password and address for your stream. Do not put a real key in public examples, screenshots, shell transcripts, or source control. A key embedded in a command can also be exposed through shell history or process listings, depending on your system. Protect it where practical, and reset it in Live Control Room if it is compromised. YouTube explains key and stream controls in Manage live stream settings.

- Run the playlist locally through at least one complete cycle. Check the transition from the last sermon back to the first, audio continuity and levels, aspect ratio, and any black frames or silence.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its displayed ingest URL and stream key into your encoder configuration. Start FFmpeg so it begins sending the stream.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before making a scheduled event public. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview and then select Go live. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover this connection flow.
- Monitor stream health messages and audio/video during the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring the stream; see its streaming tips.
A continuous local FFmpeg loop does not guarantee that YouTube will accept one uninterrupted live session indefinitely. YouTube’s current help page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a longer broadcast, plan for session limits and archive continuity rather than assuming the live event can continue without interruption.
Troubleshoot common problems
FFmpeg rejects the concat list
- Cause: The first line is not exactly
ffconcat version 1.0, or it has a byte-order mark or other text before it. Fix: Re-save as plain text with that exact first line at the beginning. - Cause: A path contains spaces or special characters, or fails concat demuxer safe-path checks. Fix: Quote or escape the path correctly; use portable relative paths where possible. Only use
-safe 0for a trusted local list that needs broader path support.
A transition has a gap, artifact, or broken audio
- Cause: The files have different streams, codecs, time bases, or audio layouts, or one has inaccurate duration metadata. Fix: Inspect and normalize the files to compatible properties, or use a filter-based concat workflow and re-encode.
- Cause: Audio and video lengths differ. Fix: Check both tracks and rehearse the full playlist to identify where timestamps or gaps become apparent.
YouTube does not show a preview or reports stream trouble
- Cause: The server URL or stream key is incorrect, or the encoder has not begun sending. Fix: Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, verify the encoder destination, and confirm FFmpeg is running.
- Cause: The selected bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity, or other traffic consumes bandwidth. Fix: Lower the output bitrate or resolution and leave upload headroom; test again while monitoring stream health.
- Cause: A key was exposed or mistyped. Fix: Reset it in Live Control Room if compromised, then update the encoder configuration. Keep the replacement secret.
The stream stops when unattended
- Cause: The computer sleeps, loses power or internet, the source drive disconnects, or FFmpeg exits. Fix: Keep the machine awake and powered, use stable local storage and networking, and monitor the process. A local setup depends on that computer and connection remaining available.
