A FFmpeg “Broken pipe” error means FFmpeg could not write to its output connection; it does not, by itself, explain why the connection stopped accepting data. Check the FFmpeg log and YouTube Live Control Room at the same timestamp before changing settings. The cause may be an ingest or configuration problem, a connection issue, or something else in the output path—there is no universal fix established for every FFmpeg and YouTube setup.
What “Broken pipe” tells you—and what it doesn’t
The message identifies a failed write to FFmpeg’s output, not the root cause. It is not proof that YouTube caused the failure, that your local internet connection dropped, or that a particular bitrate or codec is wrong. YouTube’s and FFmpeg’s documentation describe ways to check ingest health and configure output recovery, but do not assign one universal cause to this exact error across all setups.
Before restarting, preserve the evidence needed to distinguish an output failure from a loop or input problem:
- Your complete FFmpeg command, with the stream key, passwords, and other secrets removed.
- The full log around the first error, not just the final “Broken pipe” line.
- Your FFmpeg version and build information.
- The time the failure occurred and how long the stream had been running.
- The matching timestamp and messages in YouTube Live Control Room.
YouTube says Live Control Room displays timestamped stream-health errors and distinguishes critical from moderate errors. Match those timestamps to the local log rather than inferring a cause from the FFmpeg message alone. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages.

Troubleshoot in this order
1. Establish what stopped
Save the log before restarting. Determine whether FFmpeg exited, whether its output write failed while the process remained active, and whether the input or loop was still advancing. These checks help locate the failing part of the pipeline; the error text alone cannot tell you which part failed.
2. Match the failure time to YouTube’s health messages
In Live Control Room, find the error at the same timestamp as the first output-write failure. Check whether YouTube reports an incorrect stream format, bitrate, audio or video setting, keyframe frequency, resolution, or inconsistency between primary and backup streams. Correct the specific reported issue instead of changing unrelated FFmpeg flags. YouTube’s error guidance describes these classes of ingest warnings.

3. Verify the encoder settings for your ingest profile
Compare the actual output with the current YouTube settings for the selected protocol and quality. YouTube’s settings page lists RTMP/RTMPS as streaming protocols; it recommends RTMPS, calls for constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency with a four-second maximum. It lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codec options and frame rates up to 60 fps. These are recommendations and options, not a single universal profile for every ingest configuration. If Live Control Room specifies an expected bitrate, resolution, or other setting, follow that message and the applicable configuration rather than guessing a generic value.
For the particular “Incorrect stream format” error case it describes, YouTube’s error guidance requires H.264 video and AAC audio. The same guidance also calls out audio channel and sample-rate settings, video settings, keyframe frequency, and resolution. Apply the requirements to the error and stream configuration you actually have; do not assume that every “Broken pipe” means a format mismatch. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and its error messages.

4. Check the RTMP/RTMPS endpoint and port
Confirm that FFmpeg is connecting to the endpoint and port specified by the current YouTube and encoder instructions. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guidance notes that an SSL error can result from connecting to the wrong port, so verify the endpoint details rather than repeatedly changing encoding flags. Never include your stream key in a public log, screenshot, or support request. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guidance.
5. Consider FFmpeg output recovery only after saving a baseline
FFmpeg’s muxer documentation describes output recovery controls including attempt_recovery, recovery_wait_time, and recover_any_error. It also gives an RTMP example that continues at real-time rate while attempting recovery after a temporary failure. Consult the documentation for your installed FFmpeg release before using these options: available behavior can differ by version and configuration.

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable

Recovery controls do not establish that your particular failure can resume seamlessly. Depending on configuration, recovery can delay or drop data, and it does not guarantee a frame-accurate resume or that YouTube will keep the same live event open. Change recovery behavior only after capturing the original command and log so you can compare what changed. See the FFmpeg muxer documentation.
6. Test changes before depending on a long-running loop
Make one change at a time, then compare FFmpeg’s log with the timestamped stream-health report. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health during the event. A short successful test is useful evidence for that configuration, not a guarantee that a future connection interruption will recover without impact. See YouTube’s encoder-setting guidance.

Choose a fix based on the evidence
| What the evidence points to | What to check or change | What it addresses | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports a specific format, bitrate, audio/video, keyframe, or resolution error | Correct the setting named in Live Control Room and verify it against the current YouTube settings for the selected ingest profile. | A reported ingest or configuration mismatch. | Changing unrelated flags adds variables without addressing the reported issue. |
| The endpoint, port, or RTMPS connection appears incorrect | Verify the endpoint and port against the current YouTube/encoder instructions; check the RTMPS connection details. | A connection or endpoint problem. | Do not expose the stream key while sharing logs or seeking help. |
| No specific ingest warning explains the failure, and the logs indicate a temporary output interruption | After saving a baseline, review FFmpeg’s recovery controls for your installed release. | Attempts to recover output after an error. | May delay or drop data; seamless resumption and continued event availability are not guaranteed. |
| The input or loop stopped, or the failure remains unexplained | Use the complete log to investigate the input, process exit, and output path separately; test one change at a time. | Diagnosis of a problem not established by the “Broken pipe” message alone. | No single command is supported as a universal fix. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded YouTube loop that stays live without relying on an FFmpeg process at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay powered on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not live camera input. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
