Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFirst find where the audio clips: compare the earliest available recording with the FFmpeg output. If the source is already distorted, turning it down later will make it quieter, not restore the lost waveform. If FFmpeg introduces the distortion, reduce gain before the overloaded stage and test the change on a short excerpt before applying it to the continuous stream.
Locate the point where clipping starts
Clipping can enter during capture, in FFmpeg’s filter or mix graph, or in the encoded output. The fix depends on which stage is responsible. Listen to the same loud passage at each available point; waveform peaks that appear flattened and harsh-sounding distortion are useful clues, but listening matters because not every audible problem is clipping.

- Check the earliest source. Listen to the recording or capture-device output before FFmpeg processing, if available.
- Check FFmpeg’s input. Save or monitor an unprocessed input where your workflow permits, and compare the same passage.
- Check the processed and encoded result. If distortion first appears after a filter, mix, gain adjustment, or encoding step, inspect that stage and its levels.
If the source is already clipped, an output-level reduction can prevent further overload but cannot reconstruct the original waveform. If the exact cause is still unclear, preserve the original and inspect the full FFmpeg command or filter graph before changing the always-on pipeline.

Review every stage that can raise level, including volume, audio mixing, and normalization. Reduce input or mix gain before the stage that overloads, and leave headroom before encoding. A limiter or compressor may control peaks, but it changes dynamics; it is not a way to recover a source that was already clipped. FFmpeg’s Filters Documentation includes compand examples with hard-limiter curves.

After limiting, check the actual output rather than assuming it is safe: a later gain boost can push the signal back into overload. Do not apply a universal gain value without seeing the signal and knowing the delivery target. A short test should include quiet speech, typical speaking level, and the loudest expected moments.
Choose a filter for the problem you have
| Need | Possible approach | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Prevent overload introduced in the FFmpeg graph | Reduce gain before the overloaded stage; consider compression or limiting where appropriate. | Dynamics change, and downstream gain can undo the protection. |
| Control overall loudness in a continuous feed | Evaluate loudnorm in single-pass mode. |
The right target depends on the receiving service or institution; filter target ranges are not universal delivery recommendations. |
| Even out level variation over time | Evaluate dynaudnorm. |
Gain moves over time; frame and smoothing settings affect adaptation, and buffering or latency must be checked in the actual pipeline. |
| Attempt to repair an already-clipped recording | Test adeclip on a copy of a short excerpt. |
Interpolation is approximate and cannot guarantee recovery of the missing detail. |
Use loudnorm for a continuous loudness workflow
The FFmpeg Filters Documentation describes loudnorm as EBU R128 loudness normalization with dynamic and linear modes. It supports single-pass processing for livestreams and files; double-pass processing is available for files. A 24/7 feed cannot wait for the entire future program to be analyzed, so single-pass is the relevant mode to evaluate for continuous operation.

The documented option ranges are integrated loudness (IL) from -70 to -5 LUFS, loudness range (LRA) from 1 to 50 LU, and maximum true peak (TP) from -9 to 0 dBTP. The documented defaults are -24 LUFS, 7 LU, and -2 dBTP. These are filter limits and defaults, not a recommendation for every class stream. Use the target specified by the destination platform or institution, if it provides one, and review measured output over representative material.
Use dynaudnorm when speech level varies
dynaudnorm adjusts gain frame by frame to raise quieter passages while limiting gain on louder ones. The documentation gives a default frame length of 500 ms, with an allowed range of 10–8000 ms, and a default peak target of 0.95, described as 5% headroom. It advises not exceeding that target.

The Gaussian smoothing window controls how quickly gain changes: more smoothing makes changes slower and smoother; less smoothing allows faster adaptation. That behavior can affect the sound of speech, and the pipeline’s buffering and latency need to be checked in the actual application. Do not treat dynamic normalization as a substitute for fixing overload at the source.
Use adeclip only as a repair attempt
The FFmpeg documentation describes adeclip as replacing detected clipped samples with interpolated ones using autoregressive modelling. Its analysis-window setting spans 10–100 ms, with a documented default of 55 ms, alongside other detection and interpolation controls. Results depend on the damage and settings. Keep an untouched copy, compare before and after on a small passage, and use the repair only if it sounds better.

Test before changing the 24/7 pipeline
- Keep the original recording unchanged and select a short passage containing quiet speech, ordinary speech, and the loudest expected moment.
- Apply one change at a time: first address gain or mixing if FFmpeg introduces clipping; then assess loudness or dynamic-level filters only if they serve a separate need.
- Listen to the rendered excerpt and inspect output loudness or true-peak measurements where relevant. Check speech intelligibility and whether level changes sound distracting.
- Check latency and buffering in the real-time setup, especially when evaluating
dynaudnorm. - Only after the excerpt passes should you apply the change to the continuous feed, then monitor a representative period of output.
Troubleshoot common outcomes
- The source and output are both distorted: the damage is present before the later FFmpeg processing. Lowering output may reduce level but will not restore the waveform; preserve the source and test
adecliponly as an approximate repair. - The source sounds clean but the FFmpeg output clips: inspect gain, mixing, and normalization stages. Reduce gain before the overloaded stage and recheck any limiter followed by a gain increase.
- The stream is no longer clipping but speech is too quiet: do not simply boost the final output without checking peak headroom. Evaluate a suitable loudness or dynamic-level approach against the destination’s requirements.
- Level changes sound conspicuous: revisit
dynaudnormframe length and smoothing, or reconsider whether dynamic normalization is needed. Test the real pipeline for latency and buffering. adeclipsounds worse or does not help: revert to the untouched recording. Interpolation can produce a plausible estimate, not an exact restoration.- A setting or filter is unavailable or behaves differently: confirm the installed FFmpeg build and version. The official filters documentation is maintained over time, so its current option availability and defaults may differ from an older installation.
