Choose a Raspberry Pi when the video source is physically local, such as a camera at a remote site, and the exact Pi and software can handle the required stream. Choose a VPS when your video file or feed is already accessible online and the server plan can sustain the encoding workload and upload bitrate. Neither choice guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast: the source, power or hosting provider, network, FFmpeg process, YouTube ingest, and recovery setup all matter.
If your goal is to loop uploaded videos in the cloud rather than operate FFmpeg, that is a different workflow; StreamNeo is an option to consider.

Choose based on where the video comes from
| Your situation | Better starting point | Why | Check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| A camera or capture device is at a physical site | Raspberry Pi or another local Linux host | The host can read a source connected to the site. A VPS needs the feed to be reachable over a network. | Confirm the camera’s input format, the Pi’s encoding path, power and heat conditions, upload stability, and recovery behavior. |
| A video file or network feed is already online | VPS | FFmpeg can read network inputs and send output to network URLs; a remote source may therefore be simpler to process near the server. | Test the exact server plan, architecture, FFmpeg build, codecs, filters, sustained workload, and outbound-transfer terms. |
| The host must encode H.264 locally | Investigate a Pi 4 before a Pi 5 | Raspberry Pi’s published comparison identifies a hardware H.264 path on Pi 4 and software encoding on Pi 5. | Verify the encoder is available in your FFmpeg build and test your actual resolution, frame rate, filters, and runtime. |
| The source is already encoded suitably | Test stream copy before transcoding | Copying a compatible encoded stream avoids an additional encode workload. | Inspect codecs, profile, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframes, timestamps, and audio. Compatibility depends on the actual source. |
These are starting points, not guarantees that a particular Pi or VPS will sustain your stream. FFmpeg’s documentation describes a flexible input/output model, but real-time hardware acceleration depends on the machine, driver, and FFmpeg build. Its -hwaccels output lists only acceleration components enabled in that build.
What Pi 4 and Pi 5 mean for FFmpeg encoding
Raspberry Pi’s official description says Pi 4 retained video-encode hardware, while Pi 5 has no encode hardware on the platform. Its H.264 note compares Pi 5 software encoding with libx264 against Pi 4’s h264_v4l2m2m hardware path. This is an architectural distinction, not proof that every Pi 4 workload will work or every Pi 5 workload will fail.

- Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
If the camera already supplies a compatible encoded stream, test whether FFmpeg can pass it through without re-encoding. If you need to encode locally, check which encoders your installed build exposes and benchmark the complete chain, including any scaling, overlays, audio conversion, and frame-rate changes. Raspberry Pi’s published performance results are configuration-specific; do not treat them as a guarantee for another resolution or filter chain.
Set the stream for YouTube before comparing hosts
The host must deliver a stream YouTube can ingest. Google / YouTube Help’s guidance, checked on 2026-10-03, recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP; lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; specifies constant bitrate (CBR); and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.

| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not measured Pi or VPS performance. Select settings for the actual resolution and frame rate you intend to send. Allow upload headroom beyond the target bitrate and test the real source, audio, movement, and filters. YouTube advises checking upload speed and monitoring stream health and messages.
Build and test the FFmpeg path
- Confirm the source is reachable. For a local camera, identify the device’s actual output and how FFmpeg will read it. For a VPS, make sure the source file or network feed is reachable from that server. FFmpeg supports network inputs and outputs, but that does not establish that a particular camera feed is compatible.
- Inspect the source before choosing copy or encode. Check its video and audio codecs, profile, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframes, and timestamps. Try stream copy only if the source format and timing meet YouTube’s ingest needs; otherwise configure a transcode the chosen host can sustain.
- Check the available FFmpeg build and encoder. Confirm the required input, output protocol, codec, and any hardware-acceleration support are present. On a Pi, distinguish the Pi 4 hardware path from Pi 5 software encoding. On a VPS, test the selected instance architecture and drivers rather than assuming the plan exposes an accelerator.
- Set the YouTube output parameters. Use RTMPS where available, CBR, the recommended keyframe interval, and a bitrate appropriate to your resolution and frame rate. Get the ingest address and stream key from the specific YouTube Live setup; never publish or expose a real key in commands, screenshots, or logs.
- Run a representative test. Use the intended source, audio path, resolution, frame rate, and filters, with movement similar to the eventual stream. Check the actual upload rate and YouTube’s stream-health messages while the test runs.
- Operate it as a service. For a headless host, use a supervisor with restart behavior, sensible backoff, and logs. Also monitor YouTube’s remote stream health: a running FFmpeg process alone does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy broadcast.
Plan for interruptions and recovery
A continuous stream depends on more than the host. Local mains power, ISP outages, heat, camera failure, provider maintenance, process failure, YouTube ingest, and broadcast lifecycle can all interrupt it. There is no established apples-to-apples uptime comparison showing that a Pi or VPS is inherently more reliable for 24/7 YouTube streaming.

- CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
A systemd-supervised FFmpeg setup with recovery logic is one documented implementation pattern in the YouTube AutoEncoder project. That project is an example, not independent evidence of uptime. Whatever host you choose, test what happens after the camera feed drops, the network disconnects, FFmpeg exits, and YouTube ends or rejects the ingest. Confirm that logs and alerts let you distinguish a process restart from a restored YouTube broadcast.
Compare total cost, not just hardware versus hosting
No comparable current Raspberry Pi-versus-VPS price or total-cost figure is established here. A useful comparison depends on how long you will stream and what your setup already includes.
