If Google Photos is not grouping faces or finding photos, first check that you’re using the right Google Account and that Face Groups is available and switched on. Then match the fix to the symptom: Google’s overnight refresh steps are for existing face groups that are missing newer photos—not for an empty People & pets area. Avoid turning Face Groups off as a reset: Google says doing so deletes face groups, face models, and labels.
First identify what is not working
Google Photos has separate features behind these symptoms. People & pets may be missing, existing groups may be out of date, a name search may fail because a face has no label, or a photo may not be in the account’s backed-up library at all. Start with the matching case below rather than trying a destructive reset.

If People & pets or all face groups are missing
- Confirm the account. In Google Photos, check the profile menu and make sure the account shown is the one whose library you expect to search.
- Check Face Groups. On Android, open the profile menu, then Photos settings and the Face Groups setting; the precise menu wording may vary by app version. On the web, go to photos.google.com/settings and expand “Group similar faces.” Check the setting in the account you intend to use.
- Consider availability and whether groups exist. Google says People & pets may not appear if Face Groups is off, no groups have been created, or the feature is unavailable. Availability can differ by geographic region, domain, or account type. Google’s help page, Set up and manage your face groups — Android, describes these conditions.
If Face Groups is on but no groups exist, Google does not promise that the overnight refresh procedure will create them. That procedure is for groups that already contain older photos but are missing newer ones.

Leave Face Groups on. Google recommends the following refresh steps for groups that have old photos but not new ones:
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
- Turn off the device’s power-saving mode.
- Connect the device to a charger.
- Open Google Photos and leave it open while the device is charging and connected to Wi-Fi overnight.
- If only some newer photos appear, try the same process for one more night. Google also suggests optionally disabling screen timeout while the app is open and charging.
- Make sure Google Photos is updated.
Google does not specify a guaranteed processing time, and its help page warns the steps may not help when no face groups exist. Its explicit advice is: “If your face groups contain old photos, but not new ones, don’t turn ‘Face Groups’ off and on.”
If a person or pet name search fails
First verify that Face Groups is on. Google says a person or pet must have a face label before you can search using that name or nickname; face labels are searchable only while Face Groups is enabled. Open the relevant group in People & pets and add or correct its label if those controls are available. You can also correct a mistaken person or pet label or remove a photo from an incorrect group; controls vary by platform, and a face may not be available to label in every country. See Google’s Face Groups help and search help.

If general search misses particular photos
Confirm the account and backup status
- Check that Backup is on and that the correct Google Account is selected as the backup account.
- On Android, check that the device folders containing the photos you want are included in backup.
- Check the overall backup status and the status of the specific item. Google’s Check your backup guidance notes: “Your missing photos or videos may not be backed up to Google Photos.” A photo that was never uploaded to the account will not be part of that account’s cloud library.
Try a query suited to the content
- For a scene, object, or place, try a simple descriptive query.
- For visible text, a filename, camera model, or caption, try putting the phrase in quotation marks to request an exact text match. Unquoted searches are broader.
- For a person or pet, use the face label rather than assuming an unlabeled face can be found by name.
On desktop, Google directs users to photos.google.com/search. App navigation differs between Android and iOS. Ask Photos has separate eligibility and availability, and is experimental where offered; opting into it is not required for ordinary classic search. See Google’s search guidance.

As a diagnostic comparison, check that both are using the same account and run the same query on the web and in the app. Then check the app’s update status and the photo’s backup state. This comparison can help isolate where the difference appears, but it is not a Google-guaranteed fix. Google’s public help guidance does not identify one universal account-level cause or promise a restoration or indexing timeline. If the documented checks do not resolve the issue, use Google Photos Help’s feedback or community routes and include your device and app version, whether the account is personal or managed, your region, whether all groups are absent or only stale, and whether the same photos appear on the web.

Google describes Face Groups as detecting faces, creating numerical face models when the feature is on, and grouping sufficiently similar faces. Google says face models may count as biometric data in some jurisdictions. Turning Face Groups off deletes the face groups, face models, and labels you created; Face Groups content is also deleted after more than two years of account inactivity. Because this removes data, switching the feature off and back on is not a harmless troubleshooting reset. Details are in Google’s Face Groups help and Face Groups retention policy.
