Yes. A PC does not stop working just because its processor is ineligible for a newer Windows release. The practical issue is whether the Windows version on it still receives security updates and support. If it does not, the computer can keep running, but using it online becomes a growing security risk.
What processor support means
Processor eligibility is tied to a particular Windows release; it is not a timer that turns off the computer. For Windows 11, the CPU must meet the minimum speed and core requirements and appear on Microsoft’s approved processor list. Check the exact CPU model rather than judging by age or perceived speed. The PC must also meet other requirements, including TPM 2.0 and UEFI firmware capable of Secure Boot. Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements explain the criteria and point to PC Health Check and Windows Update for assessing the whole device.

What happens if the PC cannot upgrade
The installed operating system can continue to start and run, but that does not mean it remains supported. Microsoft says an unsupported Windows version does not receive its normal technical support, software updates, or security fixes, leaving the PC more vulnerable to viruses and malware. See Microsoft’s guidance on what it means when Windows isn’t supported.
Installing Windows 11 on hardware that fails its minimum requirements is not an equivalent supported upgrade. Microsoft warns that compatibility problems may occur, support is not provided for that installation, and updates—including security updates—are not guaranteed. Its guidance for installing Windows 11 on ineligible devices describes those risks.

Windows 10 support status
As of October 4, 2026, Windows 10 Home and Pro version 22H2 have passed their standard support end date: October 14, 2025. Those editions no longer receive normal security updates. Microsoft describes a consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for eligible PCs with coverage through October 2026; check Microsoft’s current Windows 10 consumer ESU program terms to confirm eligibility and availability, since the program is time-limited.

Choose a practical next step
- Check the exact PC. Find the processor model in Windows, compare it with Microsoft’s approved CPU list, then use PC Health Check or Windows Update to assess the device’s other Windows 11 requirements.
- If it qualifies, upgrade. Move to a Windows release that is currently in servicing and install its updates. Microsoft’s Windows 11 installation guidance covers supported upgrade routes.
- If it does not qualify, weigh the alternatives. Check whether the PC and edition are eligible for an available extended-update program. If not, continued use without normal security fixes carries more exposure; keeping the machine offline or limiting it to lower-risk tasks can reduce—but does not remove—that concern. For ongoing supported Windows use, Microsoft recommends moving to a PC that meets Windows 11 requirements; see its upgrade and replacement guidance.
- Protect your files before a migration. Back up important documents before reinstalling Windows or moving to another PC. An external drive or cloud backup can preserve files, but neither changes processor eligibility.
