Choose crutches according to your clinician’s weight-bearing instructions and your balance, coordination, arm strength, and handgrip—not simply the name of the knee injury. Underarm crutches are commonly used for temporary support; forearm crutches may suit longer-term needs when the user has adequate strength and trunk balance. A clinician or physical therapist should select or check the fit and teach you how to use them safely.
Start with your weight-bearing instructions
Before choosing a device, ask the treating clinician exactly how much weight, if any, you may put through the injured leg. MedlinePlus describes four common categories: non-weight-bearing, touch-down, partial-weight-bearing, and weight-bearing as tolerated. The clinician sets the limit; choosing a particular crutch does not change what your knee is allowed to bear.

- Non-weight-bearing: Keep weight off the injured leg as instructed.
- Touch-down: The foot may touch the ground for balance, within the limit your clinician explains.
- Partial-weight-bearing: Put only the permitted amount of weight through the leg.
- Weight-bearing as tolerated: Put weight through the leg as comfort and the care plan allow.
These labels need practical instruction: ask your clinician or physical therapist to demonstrate how to move while following your specific restriction.

| Type | Typical use and advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Underarm (axillary) | Commonly used for temporary mobility support. | Needs correct clearance below the armpit. Support your weight through your hands, not the underarm pads. |
| Forearm (elbow or Lofstrand) | Lightweight, leaves the hands less constrained, and is often used for longer-term needs. | Requires upper-body strength and trunk balance. |
| Platform | Supports weight through a forearm platform and may help when handgrip is weak. | Less maneuverable and less commonly used. |
Discuss whether your balance, coordination, arm strength, and grip make a particular type practical. If crutches feel unsafe, tell your care team; another mobility aid may be more appropriate.
