The reliable way to fix it is to identify the program or service that displayed the code, preserve the full context, look up the hexadecimal value with Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool, and then apply a repair documented for that particular component.
Do not start by editing the registry, replacing hardware, downloading a DLL, or assuming that the message proves a virus. Microsoft notes that system error codes can appear in many parts of the operating system, can be returned by non-system software, and may be surfaced far from the function that originally generated them.

What error 0x008A5CBE means
The value 0x008A5CBE is a hexadecimal status code. The number alone does not identify a cause. The same value can be displayed by a Windows component, a third-party application, a service, an installer, or code deep in a call stack. That is why searches that label this value as a definite driver error, registry error, storage failure, or infection are not reliable. No authoritative Microsoft page or the allowed web searches map 0x008A5CBE to one verified Windows subsystem. A no-match result from Microsoft’s lookup utility is also meaningful: it tells you that the compiled table does not identify the value, so the emitting application’s own logs and support channel become more important.
Capture the complete error before changing Windows
Write down the evidence while the message is visible. A screenshot is useful, but transcribe the text as well so that punctuation, capitalization, and any decimal or secondary code are preserved.
Record the dialog and triggering action
- Copy the entire message, including a title-bar caption, file name, module name, or secondary number.
- Note the application, installer, game, service, or device utility that was open.
- Describe the exact operation that triggered the message: startup, sign-in, opening a file, printing, connecting a device, installing an update, or another action.
- Record whether the error appears once, after every restart, or only under a repeatable condition.
- Note the Windows edition, version, build, and architecture. Press
Win+R, enterwinver, and copy the resulting version and build numbers.
Check Event Viewer when the message came from Windows
If the dialog does not identify its source, open Event Viewer by right-clicking Start and selecting Event Viewer. In Windows Logs, inspect Application and System around the time of the failure. For each relevant entry, record the Source, Event ID, Level, timestamp, and the complete text in the General tab. Use Copy or Copy Details as Text rather than paraphrasing.

Also check the application’s own log folder or support log viewer if the message came from a non-Microsoft program. A third-party application can define and display its own status values, even when the dialog appears on a Windows desktop.
Test whether a restart changes the pattern
Restart once and repeat the same action without changing any other setting. Record whether the code disappears, returns immediately, or occurs only after a particular file, device, account, or network connection is used. This distinction helps separate a one-time state from a reproducible application or service fault.
Decode the value with Microsoft Error Lookup Tool
Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool (ERR) displays the message text associated with a hexadecimal status code or another code. The documented utility can run from a folder without a conventional installation.

Microsoft lists Err_6.4.5.exe, version 6.4.5, in the Download Center. That package was published July 15, 2024, and the listed file size is 2.2 MB. Download it from Microsoft’s own Download Center, extract the package to a folder you control, and keep the original executable with your notes.

The utility is point-in-time. Microsoft warns that newer Windows releases can introduce codes that are absent from an older compiled table. Therefore, an empty result does not prove that the number is invalid; it means this version of ERR has no matching entry in its data.
Run the lookup from Command Prompt
- Open the folder containing
Err_6.4.5.exein File Explorer. - Click the address bar, type
cmd, and press Enter. Command Prompt opens with that folder as its working directory. - Run
Err_6.4.5.exe 0x008A5CBEand press Enter. - Copy the complete output, including any symbolic constant, message text, module information, or “not found” wording.
The argument must be the hexadecimal value you captured. Keep the leading 0x and all digits; do not convert it to decimal or remove leading zeroes. Microsoft documents the general syntax as Err_6.4.5.exe <error code>.

What each type of result tells you

Use the lookup result with the source context
A symbolic name is a lead, not a diagnosis. Compare it with the application that displayed the code, the Windows build, the reproducible trigger, and the logs collected at the same timestamp. Microsoft explains that a code can be returned by a function far removed from the code that displays it, or by non-system software.

When the symbolic text and the runtime evidence disagree, trust the reproducible context first and investigate the component that actually emitted the message. Do not force the number into a familiar category simply because a search result uses a similar phrase.

Once the source is known, use that publisher’s documented repair or rollback procedure. Change one relevant variable at a time and keep the original logs so you can tell whether the change altered the behavior.
If a third-party application generated the code
- Open the application’s built-in support, diagnostic, repair, or update page and record its current version.
- Check the publisher’s support documentation for the exact message text and version combination.
- If the program offers a repair operation, run that before removing user data or resetting its settings.
- If the problem began immediately after an application update, use the publisher’s documented rollback or reinstall process. Preserve configuration and logs first.
- If ERR has no match and the application’s logs identify the same code, send the vendor the complete dialog, log entry, Windows build, application version, and reproduction steps.
Microsoft specifically directs users toward third-party support when a third-party service or application generates the error. Avoid downloading a replacement DLL from an unverified site or using a registry cleaner to make the code disappear; those actions do not identify or repair the emitting program.
If a Windows component is implicated
Use the component named by Event Viewer or by a Microsoft support article that matches your exact Windows build. For example, if a Windows feature has a documented Repair, Reset, or reinstall path in Settings > Apps > Installed apps, follow that path only when the failing application is the one listed there. If the issue follows a specific Windows update, consult Microsoft’s release notes and documented uninstall or recovery instructions for that update rather than removing unrelated updates.
Do not infer that a general system-file command, registry edit, or component reset is appropriate merely because the number begins with 0x. Those operations can change system state without addressing the process that produced the message.
If timing points to a driver, plug-in, or device utility
First identify the device or utility in the application log or Event Viewer. Then use the device manufacturer’s documented driver version, rollback, or removal procedure for your Windows edition and architecture. A driver change is justified by matching evidence such as a new driver date, a device-specific event, or a failure that occurs only when that device is used; the hexadecimal value alone is not enough.

If the code appears during installation or startup
- Capture the installer or startup application name, version, and full path.
- Check whether the same operation succeeds under a newly created test account or with the optional plug-in or extension disabled, if the publisher documents those diagnostics.
- Review Event Viewer entries immediately before and after the error for a service name or module path.
- Apply the installer or application publisher’s repair, prerequisite, or rollback instructions that match the recorded version.
- Reboot and repeat the original operation once, without making additional changes. Record the result and the timestamp.
What to do when ERR returns no match
A no-match result is not a dead end. Save these items in one folder:
- The original screenshot and a transcription of the complete message.
- The ERR command and its complete output.
- The Event Viewer entry, including Source, Event ID, Level, timestamp, and details.
- The application or service name and version.
- The Windows edition, build, and architecture.
- The exact action that triggered the error and whether a restart changed it.
- The dates of recent updates, driver changes, plug-ins, or application installs.
Send that package to the support team for the application or service that displayed the message. Include a clear reproduction sequence and distinguish facts from guesses. This gives the vendor enough context to determine whether the code is proprietary, newly introduced, or being surfaced from another subsystem.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the number is a virus warning: 0x008A5CBE by itself is not evidence of malware. Use your existing security software and the application’s support channel when there is separate evidence of suspicious behavior.
- Replacing hardware first: No evidence ties this value to a disk, memory module, graphics card, or other part. Hardware replacement should follow device-specific diagnostics, not the hexadecimal value alone.
- Editing the registry blindly: An unverified registry change can create a second problem while leaving the original source unknown.
- Downloading random DLL files: A missing-module message must identify the exact signed component and publisher before any repair is considered.
- Treating a symbolic lookup as proof: ERR identifies matching message text in its tables; it does not prove which process caused the incident.
- Changing several things at once: Multiple simultaneous updates, rollbacks, and cleaners make it impossible to know which action affected the error.
How to verify that the problem is resolved
- Repeat the original action that reliably triggered 0x008A5CBE.
- Use the same application, account, file, device, and network conditions where possible.
- Check Event Viewer and the application log for a new entry at the test time.
- Confirm whether the dialog is gone, changed to a different documented error, or still identical.
- Record the Windows and application versions after the change, then keep the before-and-after logs.
If the message returns, undo the last relevant change when the publisher provides a documented rollback and report the complete before-and-after evidence. If it no longer returns, keep the notes; a later update may reintroduce the condition, and the recorded trigger will be more useful than the number alone.
