0x00200000 is not a universal Windows 11 or Windows 10 error code. Its meaning depends on the program, diagnostic page, setup log, or hardware utility that displayed it. Microsoft’s general update and installation references do not define it as a standalone error. One Microsoft Q&A Driver Verifier listing uses the value for “NDIS/WIFI verification.” Identify that context first, then follow the matching repair path below.
What 0x00200000 means on Windows
Hexadecimal values can be reused by different Windows components. The same bit pattern may represent a verification flag in one tool and an application-specific status in another. Therefore, searching for a single universal fix is risky: a repair aimed at Wi-Fi will not address a setup failure, and reinstalling Windows will not explain a value generated by a third-party utility.

Microsoft’s general Windows 11 and Windows 10 update and installation guidance does not list 0x00200000 as a standalone, universal error. The one specific Microsoft reference identified for this value is a Driver Verifier configuration listing that labels it “0x00200000 NDIS/WIFI verification.” That label describes a Driver Verifier rule; it does not prove that every appearance of the number indicates a wireless problem.

Identify the context before attempting a fix
Write down the exact wording around the number and preserve a screenshot if possible. Record the application or Windows page, the time of the failure, and what you were doing immediately beforehand. Also note whether Windows still starts normally and whether the message appears again after a restart.
- Windows Update or Windows Setup: The value appeared while downloading, installing, upgrading, or rolling back Windows.
- Driver Verifier: The value appeared in a verifier selection or report, alongside network-interface or Wi-Fi checks.
- Startup, a blue-screen report, or a minidump: A crash record contains the value or names a driver module.
- An application: A particular program displays the value in its own dialog, log, or diagnostic screen.
- A hardware utility: A network adapter, motherboard, storage, printer, or other device tool reports it.
| Where the value appeared | What can be concluded | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update or installation | It is an update/setup symptom, not proof of a Wi-Fi fault. | Use Microsoft’s update and installation sequence, beginning with the troubleshooter and a hardware check. |
| Driver Verifier | Microsoft’s listing identifies 0x00200000 as NDIS/WIFI verification in that diagnostic context. |
Identify the network or Wi-Fi driver being tested and inspect the verifier report or dump. |
| Application or vendor utility | The software that produced the message owns its interpretation. | Preserve its log and use a repair step that addresses that application or device. |
| Unclear source | No component can be selected safely yet. | Reproduce the message, capture the complete screen or log line, and avoid generic “one-click” fixes. |
Fix 0x00200000 when it appears during Windows Update or installation
The following sequence applies to both Windows 11 and Windows 10. Back up personal files before making system changes. Work through the steps in order and test the update or installation after each major change; this preserves evidence about which action affected the problem.
1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- In Windows 11, open Settings, select System, choose Troubleshoot, and open Other troubleshooters. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
- In Windows 10, open Settings, select Update & Security, choose Troubleshoot, and open the available additional troubleshooters. Run Windows Update.
- Apply any correction the troubleshooter reports, restart Windows if requested, and retry the update.
The troubleshooter is a diagnostic starting point. A result stating that no change was made does not identify the meaning of 0x00200000; continue with the context-specific checks below.
2. Disconnect nonessential external hardware
Shut down Windows and unplug devices that are not required to complete the update or installation. Microsoft’s guidance specifically calls out external drives, USB devices, printers, scanners, speakers, and docks. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and other equipment required to operate the computer. Restart and try the operation again.
If the update succeeds, reconnect devices one at a time and test between additions. That procedure does not prove that a particular device caused the original code, but it can reveal which connection reintroduces the failure.

3. Inspect Device Manager for driver warnings
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand the categories relevant to the failure, such as Network adapters, Display adapters, Storage controllers, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for a warning icon or a device that appeared immediately before the problem.
- For a suspect device, open its context menu and choose Update driver. If the update began after a recent driver change, use the device’s Properties and available rollback option, or uninstall the problematic device and restart so Windows can detect it again.
- Retry Windows Update or Setup after the driver change.
Do not infer that every warning icon is responsible. Record the device name and the exact status shown in its properties so the change can be reversed or investigated later.
4. Remove incompatible third-party security software temporarily
Microsoft’s troubleshooting sequence includes removing incompatible third-party security software when it interferes with an update or installation. Use the software’s own uninstall process from Settings > Apps (Windows 11) or Settings > Apps > Apps & features (Windows 10), or the publisher’s documented removal procedure. Restart before retrying the update. Reinstall a compatible security product after Windows is stable, and do not leave the computer without protection longer than necessary.

Disk repair commands require administrator rights. Open Windows Terminal (Admin), Command Prompt (Admin), or another administrator command shell, then run:
chkdsk /f C:
If Windows says the volume is in use and asks whether to schedule the check for the next restart, confirm only if you are ready to reboot. Save work first. CHKDSK checks the specified volume and attempts to fix file-system errors; it does not determine what the hexadecimal value means and is not a substitute for backing up important files.
6. Perform a clean restart when background software may be involved
A clean restart starts Windows with a reduced set of non-Microsoft services and startup programs, helping distinguish an update conflict from a core Windows failure. Use the System Configuration tool to hide Microsoft services, disable the remaining nonessential services, and disable nonessential startup items in Task Manager. Restart and retry the operation. Restore the normal startup configuration after testing so required programs and services run again. If the error disappears only in the clean state, re-enable items in groups until the conflicting program is identified.

7. Repair the Windows image, then system files
Open an administrator command shell and run the two repairs in this order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for DISM to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
DISM repairs the running Windows image; System File Checker then checks protected system files against that repaired image. Both operations can take time, and both require administrator permissions. Restart after they complete and test Windows Update or Setup again. A successful command does not establish that 0x00200000 was a system-file error; it only tells you that the corresponding repair operation completed.
8. Retry the update or installation with a minimal configuration
After the troubleshooter, hardware disconnect, driver review, disk check, clean restart, and image repairs, retry the original operation with nonessential devices still disconnected. Record the exact screen or setup log line if the value returns. That new evidence is more useful than repeating the same commands because it shows whether the failure occurs at the same stage.
Fix 0x00200000 when Driver Verifier displays it
Driver Verifier is a diagnostic facility, not Windows Update. In the Microsoft Q&A configuration listing, 0x00200000 is shown as NDIS/WIFI verification. NDIS is the networking interface layer used by network drivers; the label means that this verifier rule is selected in that context. It does not by itself identify a defective adapter, prove that Wi-Fi hardware has failed, or justify reinstalling Windows.
1. Confirm that Driver Verifier is the source
Open the verifier configuration or report that displayed the value and capture the selected checks. Note the network adapter, wireless device, or driver package being tested. If the value came from a crash dump, preserve the dump and the report before changing drivers. The tested module is the key evidence; the hexadecimal value alone is not enough to choose a replacement.

2. Identify the failing network driver
Use the Driver Verifier report or minidump to identify the module named when the failure occurred. Compare that name with the devices listed under Device Manager > Network adapters. Record the adapter model, driver provider, and current driver version. If the report does not identify a module, do not guess from the code. Collect the complete report and seek qualified Windows support.
3. Update, roll back, or remove the identified driver
- In Device Manager, open the identified network adapter’s Properties and record its current state.
- Use Update driver when a newer compatible package is available through your normal Windows or device-support channel.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver update and the rollback control is available, roll back to the previous package.
- If the driver is corrupted or cannot be started, uninstall the device from Device Manager and restart, then install the correct package for that adapter and Windows edition.
These actions address the component named by the diagnostic evidence. They are not a guaranteed repair for every Driver Verifier stop, especially when the report names a different module or when several drivers interact.
4. Retest and preserve the result
After the driver change, reproduce the action that triggered Driver Verifier and save the new report or dump. A clean retest is useful evidence; a repeat failure with the same module narrows the investigation. If the report changes to another module, record that change rather than assuming the first driver was the only cause.

For a hardware utility, record the device model and the utility’s diagnostic output. Check Device Manager for the same device and follow the driver path only when the utility or report identifies that device. A generic cleanup tool, a Windows reinstall, or replacing hardware without an originating log can destroy useful evidence while leaving the underlying fault untouched.

Compare repair approaches before choosing one
| Approach | Where it applies | Privileges | Data risk | Evidence produced | Does it target the originating component? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update troubleshooter | Update and installation failures | Usually standard-user launch; elevation may be requested | Low; diagnostic and automated settings changes | Reported findings and applied corrections | Only when the failure is in the update path |
| Disconnect external hardware | Setup failures potentially affected by attached devices | Standard user can unplug devices | Low; save work before shutdown | Whether the failure changes without peripherals | Yes, when an external device is involved; otherwise no |
| Device Manager driver action | Devices with warnings or a driver named by a report | Administrator approval commonly required | Moderate; the device may be unavailable until reinstalled | Device status, provider, and version information | Yes, when the selected device is the source |
chkdsk /f C: |
Suspected file-system errors on the Windows volume | Administrator | Moderate; may schedule a reboot and modify file-system metadata | Disk-check results | Only if disk errors contribute to the failure |
| Clean restart | Conflicts with third-party services or startup programs | Administrator changes may be required | Low if the normal startup configuration is restored | Whether the failure occurs with reduced background software | Only when a background conflict is involved |
| DISM followed by SFC | Damaged Windows image or protected system files | Administrator | Low to moderate; allow each command to finish | Command completion and repair status | Only when Windows component corruption is involved |
| Reset or reinstall | Last-resort recovery after evidence and backups are secured | Administrator and installation access | High; applications, settings, or data can be removed | Fresh installation state, not a diagnosis of the original code | Not necessarily; it can hide the cause rather than identify it |
Using a USB flash drive for installation or recovery
A USB flash drive can provide Windows installation or recovery media when the existing installation cannot complete an update or cannot start. It supports the recovery workflow; it is not, by itself, a proven fix for 0x00200000. Use a drive whose contents can be erased, create the media with Microsoft’s official Windows process, and back up files before choosing reset or reinstall options.
If you boot from the media, select recovery tools first when your goal is troubleshooting. A clean installation is a separate decision with substantially higher data risk. Do not use installation media to bypass identifying a Driver Verifier module or an application-specific log unless recovery is genuinely required.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWindows 10 support and migration considerations
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 computer can still exhibit this value, but ongoing troubleshooting should include a plan to move to a supported Windows 11 installation when the hardware meets Windows 11 requirements. Migration does not prove that the code will disappear; it is a support-lifecycle decision separate from diagnosing the component that produced the message.
Before upgrading, verify that essential applications, device drivers, and recovery media are available for the target installation. Keep the original logs and reports so a problem that reappears after migration can be compared with the earlier failure.
When to escalate the problem
Stop repeating generic fixes when the value returns at the same stage, when a Driver Verifier dump names a module you cannot safely replace, or when Windows cannot start after a repair operation. Collect:
- The complete error message and screenshots.
- The application, Windows page, Driver Verifier screen, or hardware utility that displayed it.
- Event Viewer entries, setup logs, minidumps, and Driver Verifier reports associated with the failure.
- Your Windows edition, whether the system is Windows 10 or Windows 11, and the date the problem began.
- Recent driver, hardware, security-software, or update changes.
- The exact commands attempted and their reported results.
Microsoft’s advanced upgrade-error documentation is aimed at IT professionals. Persistent failures after the documented checks justify using that technical guidance with an administrator or contacting qualified Windows support or a local repair technician. Give the technician the collected evidence instead of only the hexadecimal value; the surrounding log determines the next safe action.
