over the hill is a slow, scenic off-road exploration game rather than a conventional racer. Developed and published by Funselektor Labs Inc., it launched on Steam on October 14, 2026. You drive 4×4 vehicles inspired by the 1960s through 1980s, discover wilderness landmarks and solve terrain problems with tools such as a winch and planks. The result is calmer and more curated than SnowRunner, but mud, steep slopes, rocks, snow and storms can still turn an apparently simple trail into a recovery exercise.
What you actually do in over the hill
The central activity is exploration. Instead of accepting a long list of freight contracts, you choose a direction, read the terrain and work out how to reach points of interest. Trails lead to cabins, viewpoints, landmarks, meteorites and portals. Reaching them is often the objective in itself, with equipment providing solutions when a direct route becomes impossible.

Steam’s description supports solo play or online sessions with up to three friends. In co-op, players can winch one another out and approach larger discoveries together, but the underlying design remains solo-first rather than a dedicated multiplayer campaign.
A Canada-inspired route with three distinct moods
Xbox Wire describes the opening region as a Canada setting inspired by the Kootenay Mountains. Its structure moves from a relatively forgiving valley to exploratory wetlands and finally a mountainous area intended as the toughest test. Seasonal atmosphere, changing weather, wildlife and autumn light make the landscape feel like a place to tour rather than a sequence of race tracks.

Valley
The valley gives you room to learn the vehicle, identify usable surfaces and understand how quickly momentum disappears on inclines.
Wetlands
Wet areas demand more route planning. Soft ground, standing water and awkward approaches make the winch and careful throttle control more valuable than speed.
Mountains
The final area concentrates the game’s hazards: steep grades, loose rocks, snow and storms. A route that looks short on the map can become a long series of repositioning and recovery decisions.

Why it feels more relaxing than SnowRunner
Reviewers describe a game built around wandering at your own pace. There are no conventional racing objectives to force a timetable, and the pastel low-poly presentation, dynamic weather, wildlife and diegetic soundtrack support a quiet road-trip mood. You earn Pebbles through exploration and use them for vehicle upgrades, giving discovery a practical payoff without turning every trip into logistics management.
PC Gamer characterized the appeal as the broader experience of being “out there”: going slowly, taking your time and thinking about how to get where you want. That is a different fantasy from hauling a difficult load across a map while managing a chain of contracts.

The comparison is therefore about emphasis, not a claim that the controls are unrelated. Players familiar with MudRunner or SnowRunner will recognize low-grip surfaces, deliberate steering and the satisfaction of recovering a vehicle. The difference is that over the hill presents a more curated set of discoveries and generally asks you to enjoy the journey rather than optimize a delivery network.

How the driving can still bite
The relaxed framing does not make the vehicles effortless. Reviews note slow steering and limited grip, while steep slopes, mud, rocks, snow and storms can remove momentum quickly. Careless throttle inputs or an optimistic line can leave you angled against an obstacle, sliding backward or unable to climb.
Use the winch before a small mistake becomes a big one
GamesRadar calls the winch the standout tool. On an Xbox controller, it is activated with the Y button. Attach it early when the front wheels lose purchase, rather than waiting until the vehicle is fully buried or sideways. In co-op, a partner can provide the anchor and pull you toward stable ground.
Carry and place recovery aids
Planks can bridge awkward gaps and help wheels find a usable surface. Other equipment, including a jack, gives you options when a vehicle is high-centered or trapped by uneven ground. The correct solution is often a small repositioning move, not more engine power.

Read weather and surface changes
Snow and storms alter visibility and the confidence you can place in a route. Slow down before a slope or muddy section, keep an escape angle in mind and avoid committing to a narrow line unless a recovery point is available.

TechRadar praises the art style, terrain scrambling and upgrades while criticizing shallow driving mechanics, a lack of speed and environments it considers beautiful but barren. Its assessment is that the game works well for easy-going off-roading in short sessions, but there may be little to do once nearby discoveries are exhausted.

GamesRadar is more severe about the pacing, describing the game as incredibly slow and the terrain as frequently stressful. It nevertheless highlights dramatic outdoor areas, memorable trails, the winch, planks, the jack, weather effects, a wildlife camera and co-op. Online performance was still being worked on at the time of that review, so players should not assume a flawless multiplayer experience at launch.

Platforms, release and early reception
over the hill released on Steam on October 14, 2026. Xbox Wire identifies plans for Xbox Series X|S and PC, while PC Gamer reports later console releases; neither report published a confirmed console launch date. Steam’s listing shows controller support, making a gamepad a sensible choice for precise throttle and winch inputs.
Steam’s listing showed 93% positive feedback from 358 user reviews on October 15, 2026. PC Gamer also reported more than one million Steam wishlists before launch. Those figures indicate strong early interest, not a verified sales total, player-count record or long-term review consensus.
