The fastest safe route is to update Elden Ring and Windows, restart the PC, verify the Steam installation, update graphics and Bluetooth drivers, then disable PC ray tracing and mouse-control utilities. If a controller is involved, test with every other USB input device disconnected, compare USB with Bluetooth, and switch Steam Input on or off. Record the App Ver. and Regulation Ver. from the title screen before changing settings so you can tell which step helped.
Check the game version and your PC baseline first
Open Elden Ring and read the App Ver. and Regulation Ver. in the lower-right corner of the title screen. The official PC notice dated 28 May 2026 lists App Ver. 1.16.2 and Regulation Ver. 1.16.1. That update addressed intermittent or prolonged freezes, unexpected exits and visual corruption in some environments. If your title screen shows older numbers, install the Steam update and restart Windows before trying more complicated changes.

Steam lists these minimum PC requirements:
| Component | Minimum listed requirement | Why it matters while troubleshooting |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 | Older Windows versions are outside the stated baseline. |
| Memory | 12 GB RAM | Systems below this may struggle when the game streams a large area. |
| Graphics card | NVIDIA GTX 1060 with 3 GB VRAM or AMD RX 580 with 4 GB VRAM | Below-spec hardware can remain unstable even after software repairs. |
| Graphics API | DirectX 12 | The game expects a DirectX 12-capable installation and driver. |
| Storage | 60 GB available space | A nearly full drive can prevent updates or file repairs from completing. |
These are minimums, not a promise of a fixed frame rate. If the computer is below them, first make sure the game can launch and remain stable; do not interpret every hitch as a controller or driver defect. Also check that the drive has enough free space for Steam to download an update or replacement files during verification.

| When the problem appears | Most useful first checks | Strength of evidence | Least-reversible action to postpone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Immediately after an update or on startup | Confirm App/Regulation versions, reboot, verify Steam files, then update GPU and Windows drivers. | Publisher and Steam support guidance. | Driver rollback or reinstall. |
| During open-world traversal or combat | Check whether ray tracing was enabled, disable it temporarily, and close mouse-control utilities. | Bandai Namco patch notes identify both as causes of unstable PC performance. | Broad graphics-setting changes unrelated to the trigger. |
| At the instant a controller is plugged in or paired | Disconnect other input devices, test one controller by USB, then test Bluetooth separately. | Steam documentation plus an anecdotal community report involving an Xbox controller. | Replacing hardware before isolating the connection mode. |
| Only over Bluetooth | Charge the controller, reduce distance, toggle Bluetooth, remove and re-add it, run the Windows Bluetooth troubleshooter, and update the adapter driver. | Microsoft Bluetooth guidance and Steam input isolation. | Changing unrelated game settings. |
| Only with a mouse utility running | Exit software that remaps, filters or otherwise controls mouse behavior and retest. | Bandai Namco patch notes. | Assuming the GPU is defective. |
Use timing as your main separator. A hitch that appears while traversing a large area points you toward rendering and driver checks; a freeze that happens the moment a device connects points toward input and connection layers. A change that is easy to reverse, such as disabling ray tracing or closing a utility, should come before a driver rollback, reinstall or hardware purchase.

Follow this repair order
1. Update Elden Ring, restart, and make a record
- In Steam, allow Elden Ring to finish any pending download.
- Launch the game once and write down the App Ver. and Regulation Ver. shown on the title screen.
- Restart Windows rather than only closing the game. A restart clears pending driver and Bluetooth changes.
- Note whether the fault began immediately after a game, Windows or driver update. That timing is useful if you later need support.
Do not change several unrelated settings before this baseline test. Otherwise you will not know which change affected the result. If the title screen never appears, record that fact and continue with the update, restart and file-verification steps.
2. Verify the installed files in Steam
- Open the Steam Library and right-click Elden Ring.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Steam, then test the same save or menu action that previously failed.
Steam documents verification as a repair for missing or incorrect content, including situations where a game crashes during play. It may download replacement files; let that operation complete before judging the result. Verification does not update a graphics or Bluetooth driver, so continue to the next step if the symptom remains. If verification reports a problem, note whether it replaced content and include that result in any support request.
3. Update graphics, Windows and Bluetooth drivers
For stutter or a crash that persists on a machine meeting the minimum requirements, install the current graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer’s support channel and apply available Windows updates. Restart after installation. Steam identifies driver updates as a first step when performance is poor despite meeting requirements.
For a Bluetooth-only failure, open Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, right-click the adapter and use the available update option. If the current driver is incompatible, Microsoft documents uninstalling and reinstalling it, or rolling back to the previous driver when the problem started after an update. Restart Windows after each driver change and test before making another change.
- Use the driver intended for your exact GPU or adapter model.
- If the PC manufacturer supplies a customized Bluetooth driver, check that support page as well as Windows Update.
- Do not run multiple driver installers at once; finish one installation and reboot.
- Record the driver version and installation date before testing, so a later rollback has a clear comparison point.
4. Check ray tracing and mouse-control software
Bandai Namco’s Elden Ring Patch Notes Version 1.16, dated 17 October 2024, state that ray tracing may be unintentionally enabled on some PC versions and cause unstable performance. Open the game’s graphics options and turn ray tracing off temporarily, then repeat the test that stuttered or froze. If stability returns, leave it disabled while you confirm that the game and driver are current.

The same notes say unstable frame rate can be caused by third-party applications that control mouse behavior. Exit mouse remappers, acceleration or filtering tools and similar utilities completely, including their notification-area processes, and test again. This is a reversible diagnostic step; it does not prove that the utility is permanently incompatible. Re-enable one utility only after the game has passed a repeat test, so you can identify which program changes the result.
5. Reduce the input setup to one device
Disconnect non-essential controllers, steering wheels, handbrakes, USB hubs and other game-input hardware. Steam warns that external input-device drivers can interfere with Steam. A crowded input stack can also make a controller appear to be a graphics crash when the failure happens exactly as the device connects.
- Shut down Elden Ring.
- Unplug every game-input device except the one you are testing. Leave the keyboard and mouse connected.
- Restart Steam and launch the game.
- Test with one known-good controller, or with keyboard and mouse if the controller itself is the suspected trigger.
- Add devices back one at a time only after the game remains stable.
An Xbox controller causing an Elden Ring freeze or black screen has been described in a Steam community report. That report is anecdotal, not a measured failure rate or a universal explanation, but it makes device-by-device isolation worthwhile. If adding one device reproduces the fault, write down its model, connection type and exact timing rather than immediately changing several graphics options.
6. Test a USB controller directly
- Turn off or disconnect Bluetooth for the test.
- Connect the controller directly to a different USB port on the motherboard, avoiding a hub or front-panel extension where possible.
- Try another known-good USB cable if the controller uses a detachable cable.
- If available, test a second controller on the same port, then the original controller on another PC or console.
- Start Elden Ring only after Windows recognizes the single connected controller.
If USB works while Bluetooth fails, keep the game settings unchanged and troubleshoot the wireless path rather than reinstalling Elden Ring again. If connecting either controller immediately freezes the game, repeat the test with all other input devices removed and inspect the Bluetooth and input drivers. Testing the same controller with a different cable helps separate a cable fault from a game or driver fault; testing a second controller on the same port helps separate the device from the PC port.
7. Repair a Bluetooth connection
- Charge the controller and test it within a short distance of the PC, away from obvious sources of interference.
- Toggle Bluetooth off and on in Windows.
- Remove the controller from Windows Bluetooth settings, put it back into pairing mode, and add it again.
- Run the Windows Bluetooth troubleshooter.
- Update, reinstall or roll back the Bluetooth adapter driver through Device Manager, then restart Windows.
- Launch Elden Ring with no other wireless controllers or USB input devices connected.
Microsoft says an outdated or incompatible driver is one of the most common causes of Bluetooth connection problems. If the controller works over USB but repeatedly disappears over Bluetooth after these steps, keep using USB while you gather adapter and driver details for support. Do not treat a successful USB test as proof that the controller itself is defective; it shows that the wired path is currently more reliable.

8. Compare Steam Input on and off
Steam’s per-game controller configuration lets you test Steam Input in different states. Open Elden Ring’s Steam properties or controller configuration, note the current Steam Input setting, change it to the opposite state, restart the game and repeat the same test. Record which state was used. A setting that helps one controller or connection mode may not help another, so make only this one change at a time. Restore the earlier state if the comparison makes no difference and continue with driver or connection isolation.

Targeted branches for common failures
Stuttering after entering a large area
First verify the game files and update the graphics driver. Then confirm that ray tracing is not unexpectedly enabled and close mouse-control utilities. Test with a single input device and no hub. If the machine only meets the minimum GPU or RAM requirements, lower expectations for perfectly consistent frame pacing; the minimum specification is a compatibility baseline, not a performance guarantee. Repeat the same route or encounter after each change instead of comparing unrelated scenes.
Freezing or crashing at startup
Record the title-screen versions if the menu appears. If it does not, install pending Steam updates, restart Windows and verify the files. Update the GPU driver and Windows, then retest with all optional controllers and wheels disconnected. If the crash began after connecting a controller, reproduce it once with keyboard and mouse only, then test one controller by USB. This separates a game-file or graphics problem from an input-device trigger.
Black screen or freeze when a controller connects
Close the game, disconnect every other input device, and try the suspected controller alone. Compare direct USB with Bluetooth, and test Steam Input in the opposite state. If the game is stable without the controller but fails as soon as it connects, capture that exact timing for support instead of repeatedly changing graphics settings. Include whether the failure occurs before the title screen, at the menu or after loading a save.
When to stop changing settings and contact support
Escalate through Steam or Bandai Namco support when the ordered checks do not change the behavior, or when the game remains unusable on a system that meets the listed baseline. Include a compact evidence set:

Describe one reproducible sequence, such as “connect controller by Bluetooth, launch from Steam, reach the title screen, then freeze,” rather than listing many unrelated setting changes. Keep the original error message and do not omit a step that failed; negative results help support narrow the cause. Mention both successful and unsuccessful connection modes, because USB working while Bluetooth fails is more informative than simply reporting that the controller is unreliable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a replacement controller only as a controlled comparison
After isolating the connection and drivers, an Xbox Wireless Controller for PC can serve as a known-good comparison device if you already have access to one. Test it with the same USB port, Bluetooth adapter and Steam Input state. A different result can identify a controller, cable or pairing problem, but it does not demonstrate that the replacement cures Elden Ring stutter or crashes. Keep the original device disconnected during the comparison so the result remains interpretable. Treat this as a diagnostic comparison, not a reason to buy hardware before checking files, drivers and connection modes.
What the evidence supports
- The 28 May 2026 PC notice identifies App Ver. 1.16.2 and Regulation Ver. 1.16.1 and reports fixes for some freezes, exits and visual corruption.
- Bandai Namco specifically identifies unintended ray tracing and third-party mouse-control applications as possible sources of unstable PC performance.
- Steam’s file-verification process repairs missing or incorrect installed content associated with crashes.
- Graphics, Windows and Bluetooth driver updates address different failure paths; updating one does not substitute for the others.
- External input devices can interfere with Steam, and an anecdotal Xbox-controller report makes controlled device isolation a sensible diagnostic step.
No authoritative statistic establishes how often Elden Ring stutters, crashes or rejects controllers on PC, so treat the steps above as fault isolation rather than a promise of a universal fix.
Frequently Asked Questions
What versions should Elden Ring show on PC?
The official PC notice dated 28 May 2026 lists App Ver. 1.16.2 and Regulation Ver. 1.16.1. Check the lower-right corner of the title screen, install any pending Steam update and restart Windows if your numbers are older.

Steam says verification can repair missing or incorrect content when a game crashes during play. Use Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files, allow replacement downloads to finish and retest.
Why does Elden Ring freeze when I connect an Xbox controller?
A Steam community report describes freezes or black screens when an Xbox controller is connected, but that is anecdotal rather than a universal cause. Disconnect every other input device, compare direct USB with Bluetooth and test Steam Input in the opposite state.
What should I do when Bluetooth works nowhere but USB works?
Charge the controller, reduce the distance, toggle Bluetooth, remove and re-add the device, run the Windows Bluetooth troubleshooter and update, reinstall or roll back the adapter driver in Device Manager. Microsoft identifies outdated or incompatible drivers as a common Bluetooth problem.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I replace my controller to stop Elden Ring crashes?
Not first. Isolate the controller, cable, port, connection mode and Steam Input state. An Xbox Wireless Controller for PC can be a controlled comparison device, but a different result does not prove that it cures game stutter or crashes.
Which PC specifications are the minimum baseline?
Steam lists Windows 10, 12 GB RAM, a GTX 1060 3 GB or RX 580 4 GB, DirectX 12 and 60 GB of storage. These are compatibility minimums, not a guarantee of perfectly consistent frame pacing.
What information should I send to support?
Provide the exact error or freeze point, App and Regulation versions, Windows edition, CPU, GPU, RAM, free storage, graphics and Bluetooth driver versions, controller model and connection mode, Steam Input state, verification result and the update or date when the problem began.
The Bottom Line
Start with the version check, update and reboot, then verify Steam files and update the relevant drivers. Disable unintended ray tracing and mouse-control utilities, isolate input devices, compare USB with Bluetooth, and test Steam Input one state at a time. If the fault remains, send support a reproducible sequence and your recorded versions and hardware details.
