If a live-stream alert plays twice or sounds delayed, start by checking for two audio paths in OBS Studio: a duplicate capture source or a monitoring output that feeds back into a captured device. Trigger one test alert, watch the Audio Mixer meters, disable overlapping routes, then record and listen to a short test before going live. The cause depends on how your scene and audio devices are configured.
Why stream alerts echo
OBS Studio does not provide stream alerts directly. Alerts from third-party services are typically embedded in a scene as a Browser Source. An alert can sound doubled when that source—or the device carrying its audio—is captured along another route. A monitoring route can also produce a duplicate if its output is sent back into audio that OBS captures.

The first useful distinction is whether the alert itself is present more than once, or whether one alert is reaching OBS through multiple audio sources. The Audio Mixer can help isolate that: meters moving together during a test alert are a clue to inspect overlapping routes, not a formal OBS echo test.

Find the duplicate audio path in OBS

Locate the alert Browser Source
In the scene you use while live, find the alert provider’s Browser Source. Keep the Audio Mixer visible so you can observe source meters. OBS’s guidance on alerts and Browser Source behavior is available in its alert instructions and Browser Source guide.

Trigger one test alert and watch the meters
Use the alert provider’s test function. Note which Audio Mixer meters move and whether more than one source reacts in sync. If multiple sources respond, inspect each for the same device or application audio being captured twice.

Remove duplicate device capture
Check whether the same microphone or output device is both an Audio Input/Output Capture source in the scene and selected globally under Settings → Audio. If it is, disable one route: either keep the global device or capture it directly in the scene. OBS warns that capturing a device in both places can cause echo; see its Audio Sources guide.

Check per-application capture on Windows
If you use Application Audio Capture sources, disable global Desktop Audio to avoid capturing the same application audio by two paths. OBS’s guide describes Application Audio Capture for OBS Studio 28 on Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11. It also says Window Capture and Game Capture can include application audio beginning with OBS Studio 30.1. These documented options are Windows-specific; see the Application Audio Capture guide.

Inspect audio monitoring
Open Advanced Audio Properties from the Audio Mixer and check the alert source’s monitoring mode. Then check the monitoring device configured under Settings → Audio. Monitoring lets you hear a source through OBS’s monitoring device; if that output is also captured or looped back into OBS, it can create a second path. Make sure the monitor output is not routed into a device OBS is capturing. OBS explains the monitoring path in its Audio Mixer guide; the feedback-loop risk is troubleshooting guidance rather than a guaranteed diagnosis for every setup.

Record a short test and listen back
Make a brief OBS recording that includes a test alert, then play it back. Local monitoring can sound different from the stream or recording output, so do not rely on what you hear live alone. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends checking the meters and testing settings before going live.
Match the symptom to the next check

Choose one capture route for each sound
For desktop or application audio, choose the route that gives you the control you need rather than capturing the same sound globally and per source.

- Global Desktop Audio: a broad capture route. If you use per-application capture on supported Windows versions, disable this global route to avoid overlap.
- Per-application capture: lets you control an application’s audio as its own source in the mixer. OBS documents this feature for Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11, with support beginning in OBS Studio 28.
- Scene-level device capture: useful when you want a device controlled in a scene, but avoid selecting that same device globally under Settings → Audio as well.
- Local monitoring: use it when you need to hear a source through OBS, but keep the monitoring output separate from devices being captured.
OBS’s Audio Input/Output Capture sources are documented for Windows and macOS. The guide points Linux users to ALSA/PulseAudio sources instead. OBS also lists VB-CABLE as a Windows-specific workaround for some applications incompatible with Application Audio Capture; it is not a universal remedy for alert echo.
