To draw over what viewers see in a live stream, put the drawing in the stream’s output—not just on your local monitor. In OBS, use a drawing plugin or add a browser-source overlay; for a Zoom or Microsoft Teams screen share, use the meeting app’s annotation controls. A mouse is enough for basic marks, while a tablet or second device can make drawing easier.
Choose a method that reaches the viewers
First identify where the marks need to appear. A desktop utility may draw over your own screen without becoming part of the broadcast. For OBS, choose a tool that draws on OBS’s stream output or adds a drawing layer/source to the scene. In a meeting, the platform’s annotation feature applies to the shared content and may be governed by host or presenter permissions.

|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Draw dock | OBS stream output | Drawing directly while operating OBS | Check the resource page for current details |
| Instant Highlight Source Draw | OBS preview or a canvas layer in the scene | Freehand marks and shapes within an OBS workflow | Mouse, tablet, or touch |
| WebRTC-Telestrator | Browser-source overlay in an OBS scene | Drawing from a separate phone, tablet, or PC | Remote browser on another device |
| SHARA | Desktop annotation layer; the resource describes compatibility with OBS and meeting/screen-sharing tools | Using a Windows utility’s annotation tools | See the resource page for its current controls |
| Zoom or Teams annotation | The meeting’s shared content | Annotating during a meeting screen share | Built-in meeting controls |
These are feature descriptions from the respective resource and support pages, not comparative performance tests. Before relying on a desktop overlay, confirm that it is captured in the output your viewers receive.
Draw over an OBS stream
Option 1: Use the OBS Draw dock
The OBS Forums page for Draw describes a dock that draws on stream output. The page lists Windows, macOS, and Linux support and identifies OBS 28.0.0 as a minimum for the listed resource. Its update history says version 0.3.0 requires OBS 31.1 or later and adds OBS 32 support; the resource page identifies version 0.3.1. Because plugin versions and requirements may change, check the current page and the instructions there before installing.

Annotate a Zoom or Teams screen share
Zoom
Zoom’s annotation guide documents tools including pen, highlighter, arrows, shapes, text, color and line-width controls, erasing, undo/redo, and spotlight. The available controls depend on device and platform. Hosts can enable or disable annotation for other participants.
- Start sharing the content you want to discuss.
- Open the annotation controls for the shared content and choose a suitable tool, such as pen, arrow, or highlighter.
- Check whether participant annotation is enabled or restricted, and ask the host to change the setting if needed.
- If using Zoom on iOS, note the documented limitation: whole-screen sharing cannot be annotated from iOS, while sharing a portion of the screen can.
Microsoft Teams
Microsoft’s Teams annotation guide describes annotation powered by Whiteboard. While content is shared, the presenter can turn annotation on from the presenter toolbar and choose whether everyone may annotate or access is limited to the presenter. Teams also documents saving an annotation snapshot to a Whiteboard file.

- Share the content you want to present.
- Use the presenter toolbar to turn on annotation.
- Choose whether participants can annotate or whether annotation is restricted to you.
- Use the annotation tools on the shared content; save a snapshot to a Whiteboard file if you need to retain it.
Make the marks useful and keep the scene readable
- Use arrows or brief highlights to direct attention; draw only what the audience needs to understand the point.
- Check line visibility against both light and dark parts of the content before going live.
- Plan how to erase or clear a mark so old annotations do not obscure later material.
- Record a short private test or rehearse with an unlisted stream. Check the actual program output, including any transition to another scene.
- If participants can annotate in a meeting, set that permission intentionally; unrestricted drawing can make a shared screen difficult to follow.
Troubleshoot missing marks and control problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| You can see the drawing, but viewers cannot | The marks are on a local desktop layer or a preview that is not in the stream output | Record a test and inspect OBS program output. Switch to a dock or scene canvas that draws on output, or include the telestrator browser source in the scene. |
| The plugin does not load or its controls are missing | The installed version may not match the operating system or OBS version | Check the OBS Draw resource’s current compatibility and update notes, then follow that version’s installation instructions. |
| The remote device cannot show the host display or return marks | The host/remote browser setup or OBS browser-source overlay is incomplete | Recheck the WebRTC-Telestrator setup instructions, selected display, remote browser connection, and browser source visibility in the scene. |
| Meeting participants cannot annotate | The host or presenter has restricted annotation permissions | Ask the Zoom host to enable participant annotation or the Teams presenter to allow everyone, as appropriate. |
| Zoom annotation is unavailable on iOS | The shared content is the whole screen | Zoom’s guide distinguishes whole-screen sharing from sharing a portion; use a portion if annotation is needed from iOS. |
| A drawing tool feels awkward for detailed writing | Mouse input may not suit the task | Try touch or a tablet with the scene drawing resource, or use a separate phone/tablet with the telestrator pattern. A pen tablet is not required. |
Or let it run in the cloud
