If people on a video call hear their own voices coming back, first check whether the meeting is connected to more than one device. Leave audio active on only one phone, computer, or room system. Then lower speaker volume or switch to headphones, and confirm the meeting app is using the microphone and speakers you intend. Echo can come from another attendee’s setup, so the problem may not be on your device.
First identify who hears the echo
There are two useful clues: you may hear your own voice repeated after you speak, or other participants may hear their words returned when one person speaks. In the second case, the audio path of the person whose turn triggers the echo is a good place to start, but the microphone is not necessarily the only cause. Sound from speakers, duplicate connections, device routing, or echo cancellation can all be involved.

If the source is unclear, ask the host to mute participants one at a time. Alternatively, mute everyone and unmute each person individually until the echo returns. Zoom documents both approaches for isolating the attendee whose setup is returning audio: Zoom’s echo troubleshooting steps.
Remove duplicate meeting audio
Check whether the same meeting is connected to audio on both a phone and a computer, or whether two nearby computers or a room system and personal device have live audio. Keep just one audio connection active. Zoom lists overlapping phone and computer audio and multiple active computers in one room among possible echo sources.

In Microsoft Teams, choose one audio source—computer, phone, or room—or join without audio. If you joined using phone or room audio, switch the audio mode so the other device is not also returning meeting sound. Teams’ meeting join guidance describes the available audio choices, including “Don’t use audio.”
Keep speaker sound out of the microphone
Speakers can send meeting audio back into a nearby microphone. Try these changes one at a time:

Google Meet says it automatically attempts to correct echo and may show suggestions when it detects a problem. In Meet, open More options → Troubleshooting & help → Audio & video devices to see relevant guidance. Google also recommends headphones, lower speaker volume, and muting when not speaking: Fix audio issues in Google Meet.
Confirm the selected microphone and speakers
A computer may expose several audio devices, and a headset’s built-in microphone is not always the input selected by the meeting app. Check both the microphone and speaker choices in the app before or during the call. Make sure the selected microphone is the one you are actually speaking into, rather than a laptop or monitor microphone.

If the microphone is missing or not registering
Check that your operating system allows the meeting app to use the microphone, and that the correct input device is selected. In Windows 10 or 11, review microphone access for apps and desktop apps, check the microphone’s position and input level, then use the built-in microphone test to confirm that sound registers. Microsoft’s steps are here: Manage microphone permissions in Windows.

Teams Rooms on Windows
Microsoft documents a specific echo issue in Teams Rooms on Windows in which a connected USB microphone or speaker can send echo to remote participants. Its workaround is to disable the audio enhancement setting for the attached Teams-certified USB audio device. This applies to that Teams Rooms device scenario, not as a general setting change for laptop calls: Troubleshoot USB audio device echo in Teams Rooms.
When a headset is worth trying
If you have checked for duplicate audio, reduced speaker volume, and verified the selected devices but still use built-in speakers and a nearby microphone, a USB headset with a microphone is a reasonable optional fallback. Its purpose is to keep call audio from the speakers out of the microphone; buying one is not the first step for every echo problem.
