When the connection cannot sustain your configured bitrate, OBS lowers it to help keep the stream going instead of dropping frames. Picture quality may fall while the bitrate is reduced, and the setting manages congestion rather than fixing its cause.
What “Dropped frames” means in OBS
OBS uses “Dropped frames” for frames lost because the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS may drop frames to compensate; if too many are lost, the stream can disconnect. OBS says network-related dropped frames are extremely unlikely to be caused by OBS Studio itself.

First distinguish stream-side dropped frames from viewer buffering. Viewers can experience buffering because of their own devices or internet connections even when your OBS stream is not dropping frames. If the issue is only playback for some viewers, the dynamic bitrate setting may not address it; output settings or the platform’s transcoding options may be more relevant.
Enable dynamic bitrate
- In OBS Studio, open Settings → Advanced → Network.
- Enable Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta).
- Apply the setting and monitor OBS’s dropped-frame status during a representative stream.
OBS describes the behavior as lowering bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, rather than dropping frames. The trade-off is less image detail while the bitrate is lower. OBS recommends this as a fallback when the underlying connection issue cannot be resolved, not as a substitute for diagnosis.

Find and fix the cause, in order
1. Check the ingest server and route
Try a different streaming server in OBS. If testing another streaming service also clears the problem, that can help identify a service-specific connection path; it does not repair the route to the original service. Keep the intended destination in mind when interpreting the test.
2. Lower the baseline bitrate to a sustainable rate
Set the bitrate according to your stable upload capacity and the destination’s limits. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee that a stream will be stable. Leave headroom for upload variation and other traffic rather than treating a speed-test peak as continuously available.

For YouTube ingestion, its published recommendations depend on codec, resolution and frame rate. At 1080p60, YouTube lists 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for H.264; for AV1/H.265 it lists 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube recommendations, not universal targets: your configured rate still needs to fit your stable upload and the platform’s limits. YouTube specifies CBR for RTMP/RTMPS encoder bitrate mode.
3. Check network settings and software
- On Windows, OBS suggests trying Network Optimizations and TCP pacing; some users report benefits, but they are not guaranteed fixes.
- Leave Bind to IP at Default unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- Try IPv4 Only only as a diagnostic. If it makes no difference, OBS recommends returning to IPv4 and IPv6.
- Check whether VPN or security software, bundled network-prioritization or optimization utilities, or outdated drivers are interfering. Get network drivers from your PC or motherboard manufacturer.
4. Check the physical connection
Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming; test with wired Ethernet if possible. Restart the modem and router. A cable, network card, router or other device may be faulty. A replacement Ethernet cable may be worth trying if you are moving off Wi-Fi or suspect the existing cable is damaged; OBS does not specify a cable category or guarantee that replacing one will fix dropped frames.

5. Escalate a persistent connection problem
If these checks do not resolve the issue, contact your ISP with the times, destination and symptoms. The problem may involve changes on the ISP’s side or congestion along the route. YouTube also recommends testing outbound internet and contacting the ISP if that test shows a connection issue.
Test before the next stream
Before going live, test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, then monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages during the event. A static image or silent test may not expose the same load or issues as the real program.

- If the encoder preview or local recording already looks or sounds wrong, check source routing, encoder errors and CPU load.
- If the encoder output looks and sounds healthy but viewers have trouble, investigate the outbound internet connection and stream health.
- Compare your stable upload headroom with the destination’s recommendation for your actual codec, resolution and frame rate.
