Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFix a gaming mouse in this order: establish a clean direct connection, verify Windows and mouse-software settings, clean the buttons, sensor and wheel safely, then test the mouse on another computer. If the same fault follows the mouse after those checks, it is probably a switch, sensor, encoder or other hardware problem that needs manufacturer support or warranty service.
Identify the symptom before changing anything
Different mouse faults point to different causes. A button that sends two clicks is not diagnosed the same way as a cursor that skips, and neither is the same as a wheel that jumps one direction. Use the symptom and the second-computer result to avoid changing several variables at once.

| What you observe | Most useful first checks | What the result suggests |
|---|---|---|
| One press opens, selects or fires twice | Windows click setting, Double-click speed, button debris, direct USB connection, another computer | If it occurs on two computers after cleaning and settings checks, suspect the button switch |
| Cursor skips, freezes briefly or stutters | DPI and pointer speed, sensor lens, mouse surface, battery, receiver distance and 2.4 GHz interference | If a plain white surface fixes it, the pad or surface is involved; if charging and a nearby receiver do not help, suspect the mouse or radio hardware |
| Wheel jumps, scrolls in the wrong direction, sticks or does nothing | Wheel cleaning, wheel and gesture settings, Smooth Scrolling, direct connection, re-pairing, firmware and another computer | A fault that follows the mouse across computers is more likely an encoder, switch or other hardware failure |
Keep a simple note of which change you make and whether the symptom changes. That record makes a support or warranty claim much faster.
Establish a clean baseline
Use a direct connection
- Disconnect the mouse, then reconnect it to a different USB port.
- Bypass USB hubs, extenders, docking stations and monitor pass-through ports while testing. A direct port on the computer removes another possible source of power or communication problems.
- Inspect the cable for kinks, cuts or a connector that moves in the socket. For a wireless model, check that the receiver is firmly inserted and that the mouse is switched on.
- Charge the battery fully or install a fresh battery before judging wireless behavior.
Microsoft’s general mouse guidance is to confirm that the device has power, is connected correctly and has no dirt blocking keys or sensors. A wired mouse should remain connected directly for the rest of the diagnostic process. On a wireless model, place the receiver within 20 cm of the mouse during testing, as Logitech recommends, and move it away from Wi-Fi routers and other 2.4 GHz devices. Temporarily disconnect nearby wireless peripherals if you need to isolate interference.

Separate computer-side and mouse-side causes
Test the mouse on another computer, preferably with the manufacturer’s control software closed or not installed. You do not need to use the same game or profile; a plain desktop test is enough. If the fault disappears, inspect the first computer’s Windows settings, drivers, software profile or USB environment. If it follows the mouse, the mouse itself is the stronger suspect.
Fix unintended double-clicking
Check the Windows folder-click option
Windows can be configured to open an item with a single click. Open Mouse Properties, select the Buttons tab, and make sure the folder setting reads Double-click to open an item (single-click to select). Apply the change and test in File Explorer before opening a game.
Adjust Double-click speed
In the same Mouse Properties area, move the Double-click speed slider. Microsoft documents this control as the setting that determines how quickly two presses must occur to count as a double-click. If the slider is set unusually fast, a normal press can be interpreted in an unexpected way; if it is unusually slow, deliberate double-clicks may be difficult. Use the test icon in Mouse Properties after each small adjustment rather than moving the slider to an extreme.

Clean the affected button and retest
Dust or crumbs around a button can prevent a clean release and create extra electrical contacts. Disconnect the mouse before cleaning and use short bursts of compressed air around the button seam, following the safe method in the cleaning section below. Do not flood the gap with liquid. Reconnect directly to a different USB port and test several clicks in a text editor or on the desktop.
Use the cross-computer test
If one-click presses still produce two inputs, repeat the test on another computer. A problem present on only one computer points back to Windows, a game profile, a driver or a connection path. A problem present on both computers after the setting and cleaning checks is consistent with a worn or contaminated switch. Logitech advises contacting Customer Care when the problem began recently or its listed troubleshooting steps do not resolve it. For a mouse outside warranty, a switch repair is possible only if you have the tools and experience; opening the shell can damage clips, feet or the warranty seal, so support is the safer next step.
Fix cursor skipping or stutter
Normalize pointer and DPI settings
Open the mouse’s configuration software and temporarily choose a moderate DPI rather than an unusually high or low value. Also check Windows pointer speed and return it to a middle setting for testing. Disable unusual acceleration, angle snapping or application-specific profiles until the cursor behaves consistently. These changes do not repair a damaged sensor, but they remove profile conflicts and make the symptom easier to reproduce.

Inspect the sensor and surface
Turn the mouse over and look at the optical lens. Lint, hair or a film of dust can interrupt the reflected image that the sensor uses to calculate movement. Clean it with the gentle, dry method described below. Then test on a plain, matte piece of white paper. If tracking becomes stable on paper, the original pad may be glossy, translucent, patterned, dirty or worn in a way the sensor dislikes. Replace or clean the surface before assuming the mouse is defective.
Rule out wireless power and interference
Low power can produce intermittent tracking rather than an obvious shutdown. Charge the mouse or replace its battery, keep the receiver close to the mouse and remove nearby 2.4 GHz sources while testing. Logitech specifically recommends receiver placement within 20 cm and minimizing interference from routers and other wireless equipment. If a wired connection tracks normally but wireless mode continues to skip, concentrate on battery condition, receiver placement, radio interference or a failing wireless circuit.
Confirm the result on another computer
Run the same paper-surface test on a second computer. A stable result there indicates that the original computer’s pointer settings, driver or background software deserves attention. Stutter on both systems, with a clean lens, adequate power and a suitable surface, points toward the sensor or internal electronics.

Fix a stuck, erratic or nonresponsive scroll wheel
Check the mechanical movement
With the mouse disconnected, rotate the wheel slowly in both directions and press it if it has a middle-click function. It should move freely, with even detents and no grinding or sideways binding. Use short bursts of compressed air around the wheel to dislodge debris, then reconnect and test. Logitech’s wheel guidance specifically recommends compressed air.
Review wheel and gesture settings
Open the mouse’s configuration software and inspect wheel direction, scroll-line or page settings, button assignments and gesture functions. Disable Smooth Scrolling where that option is available, then test in a simple document. A reversed direction in every application is usually a software setting; a wheel that sends random jumps, stops responding or changes direction unpredictably is less likely to be fixed by a setting alone.
Reconnect, update and change the port
- Connect the mouse or wireless receiver directly to the computer rather than through a hub.
- For a wireless model, remove and re-pair the receiver according to the manufacturer’s procedure.
- Try another USB port, then restart the computer.
- Check the manufacturer’s software for a firmware update and apply it only with stable power and a direct connection.
Firmware can correct a software or communication bug, but it cannot restore a physically worn wheel encoder. Do not interrupt an update or disconnect the mouse while it is being written.

Test outside the usual application
Scroll in a browser, a plain text document and the operating system’s settings pages. If only one game or program is affected, inspect that application’s input and accessibility options. If the wheel misbehaves everywhere, repeat the direct-connection and another-computer tests. Razer’s troubleshooting guidance lists debris, dirty sensors, faulty switches, hub connections, software bugs, firmware, surface calibration and driver or Synapse issues as possible causes; its page was updated 3 September 2026.

Cleaning is useful for debris-related symptoms, but it can also cause damage if moisture reaches the electronics.
- Unplug the mouse or remove its batteries before cleaning.
- Use compressed air in brief bursts around button gaps and the wheel. Hold the can as directed by its label and avoid forcing liquid propellant into the mouse.
- For the shell, wheel exterior and surrounding areas, use a lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly dampened with mild soap and water, or a 70% or weaker isopropyl alcohol solution on the cloth. The cloth should be damp, not wet.
- Wipe the optical sensor gently. Do not scrape the lens or press hard enough to move it.
- Allow every surface to dry completely before reconnecting the mouse or reinstalling batteries.
Microsoft’s safety instruction is explicit: do not apply liquids directly to a mouse or keyboard. Never pour cleaner into a button, wheel opening or sensor, and do not repeatedly apply liquid when a fault remains. Persistent problems need support rather than more moisture.

| Test result | Likely category | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Works after changing a Windows setting | Operating-system configuration | Keep the corrected setting and check game-specific profiles if the symptom returns only in one title |
| Works after moving from a hub to a direct port | USB power or communication path | Continue using a direct port or replace the faulty hub, extender or cable |
| Works after cleaning a button, sensor or wheel | Debris or surface contamination | Keep the mouse dry and clean the exterior periodically using the safe method |
| Works on white paper but not on the usual pad | Surface compatibility or pad condition | Clean or replace the pad with a uniform, opaque, matte surface |
| Works wired but not wirelessly | Battery, receiver placement, interference or wireless hardware | Charge or replace the battery, keep the receiver close and remove 2.4 GHz interference; seek support if it persists |
| Fails on two computers after all reversible checks | Probable hardware fault | Use manufacturer support or warranty service instead of opening the mouse or repeatedly applying cleaner |
When to stop troubleshooting and request service
Contact the manufacturer when a double-click, tracking fault or wheel problem survives the direct-connection, settings, cleaning and second-computer checks. Include the model, serial number if requested, connection type, operating system, when the fault began and the tests that reproduced it. A short video showing a single press generating two clicks or the wheel jumping can help support staff verify the symptom.
Do not open the mouse merely to reach a switch or encoder while it may still be under warranty. Disassembly can break the shell, damage the sensor cable or void coverage. Even outside warranty, repeated liquid application is not a repair strategy; once contamination and configuration causes are excluded, replacement of the affected component or the mouse is the appropriate decision.
