Most BRUTAL build failures have one of four causes: the wrong project is being compiled, the required .NET 10 SDK is missing, the package for a requested feature was not added, or a successful managed build is being confused with a Vulkan runtime failure. BRUTAL’s currently supported path is to create a small .NET console project and consume its NuGet packages; the repository does not yet ship the complete solution and build scripts that a conventional source build would require.
First, make sure you mean the C# BRUTAL framework
“Brutal” is used by two unrelated projects. The troubleshooting in this article applies to the open-source C# framework and game-engine foundation maintained in the stvnksslr/AhwooTech repository. Its packages use the Ahwoo.Brutal.* namespace.

A separate project called tcp-brutal is a Linux kernel module. It is built through the kernel’s Kbuild system, not through the .NET SDK. If your error mentions a kernel module, KERNEL_DIR, insmod, tcp_congestion_ops, obj-m, or a missing directory under /lib/modules/, stop following the C# instructions and use the kernel-module branch near the end of this article.
What BRUTAL officially requires
The BRUTAL README names the following prerequisites for its supported package workflow:
#1 Best Overall
- [Ultra-Lightweight Ear Buds Designed for Small Ears] Each earbud weighs only 3.7g and features a compact, ergonomic in-ear design made especially for small ears. Secure, low-profile, and comfortable for workouts, all-day wear or overnight sleeping. The ultra-slim profile sits flush in your ear with no hard edges poking or rubbing, so you can even sleep on your side without discomfort.
- [Immersive Stereo Sound with TOZO OrigX Technology] TOZO OrigX tuning delivers clear vocals, balanced mids, and natural stereo sound for music, podcasts, and videos.
- [Long Battery Life for Daily Use] Get up to 7 hours of playtime on a single charge, with up to 32 hours total using the charging case—ideal for workdays, commuting, and extended listening sessions.
- [Bluetooth 5.3 & Stable Connection] Bluetooth 5.3 provides fast pairing, stable wireless performance, and reduced dropouts as you move around home or office.
- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- .NET 10 SDK. The SDK, rather than only a .NET runtime, is required because the project must restore packages and compile source code.
- Windows or Linux. These are the operating systems identified by the project documentation.
- A Vulkan 1.3-capable GPU and current drivers when you use BRUTAL’s rendering features.
- The Vulkan SDK only when you need development validation layers. It is optional for the minimal package-based setup and is not listed as a prerequisite for creating a basic GLFW window.
There is no published, authoritative package-version and target-framework matrix in the project documentation. Consequently, an exact package pin cannot be prescribed without seeing the restore or compiler error. Start with the package IDs shown by the project, then use the diagnostic text to resolve a version or framework mismatch.
Use the supported package-based setup first
A clean console project separates SDK and NuGet problems from issues in an existing application. Run the documented sequence in a terminal:
- Confirm that the command-line SDK is the required major version by running
dotnet --version. The result should identify .NET 10. - Create a test project:
dotnet new console -n HelloBrutal. - Enter its directory:
cd HelloBrutal. - Add the core package:
dotnet add package Ahwoo.Brutal.Core. - Add the GLFW integration used by the basic windowing example:
dotnet add package Ahwoo.Brutal.Glfw. - Restore, compile, and run it with
dotnet run.
If this small project builds, the SDK, package source, and basic package compatibility are working. Move the dependencies into the real application one feature family at a time instead of adding every BRUTAL package pre-emptively.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDiagnose the error at the layer where it occurs
Read the first substantive error, not the cascade of follow-up messages. BRUTAL failures generally fall into four layers.
| Layer | Typical symptom | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Project identity | Kernel headers, Kbuild variables, or module symbols appear in a supposed C# build | That you are in the BRUTAL C# repository and using a .NET project, not tcp-brutal |
| Managed toolchain | The dotnet command is unavailable, reports an older SDK, or cannot target the requested framework |
The installed .NET 10 SDK and the SDK selected by the current shell and project |
| Package restore or compilation | NU-series restore errors, unresolved namespaces, or “type or namespace could not be found” diagnostics | Exact package IDs, configured NuGet source, and the package family required by the feature |
| Native graphics runtime | The managed project compiles, but device, driver, loader, or window initialization fails when the program starts | Vulkan 1.3 capability, current GPU drivers, and optional validation-layer installation |
Do not fix a runtime Vulkan problem by repeatedly changing C# references, and do not install a Vulkan SDK to solve a missing managed namespace. Those are different layers.

Match a missing type to the package family that supplies it
BRUTAL is modular. A project that references the core package does not automatically contain every rendering, windowing, shader, user-interface, audio, networking, or physics API. Add the family that corresponds to the API you actually call.
| Feature or error area | Package family identified by the project documentation | What the package provides |
|---|---|---|
| Core framework types | Ahwoo.Brutal.Core |
The base framework APIs used by a BRUTAL application. |
| Window creation and input through GLFW | Ahwoo.Brutal.Glfw |
GLFW integration for the basic windowing path. |
| Windowing and input through SDL | The BRUTAL SDL packages | An alternative windowing/input integration when the application uses SDL APIs. |
| Vulkan rendering | Brutal.Vulkan, Brutal.Vulkan.Abstractions, and Brutal.Vulkan.Vma |
Vulkan bindings and abstractions, including the listed memory-allocation integration. |
| Shader compilation | Brutal.ShaderC and Brutal.Slang |
The ShaderC and Slang integrations named by the project. |
| Immediate-mode user interface | The BRUTAL ImGui package listed by the project | ImGui integration; the exact package should match the API used by the application. |
| Audio, networking, or physics | The corresponding BRUTAL audio, networking, or physics packages | These subsystems are separate dependencies rather than implicit parts of the core package. |
For a compiler message such as “The type or namespace name could not be found,” identify the namespace in the missing symbol, then check whether that subsystem’s package is referenced in the project file. Adding a package does not correct a typo in a namespace or an API that belongs to a different version, so compare the name in your code with the package’s documented API after restore succeeds.

Fix .NET SDK and restore failures
The dotnet command is missing
Install the .NET 10 SDK, not just a runtime. Reopen the terminal after installation and run dotnet --version again. If the command still resolves to an older installation, inspect which executable your operating system is selecting and correct the installation or environment-path order before diagnosing BRUTAL.
The installed SDK is not .NET 10
The BRUTAL README names .NET 10. An older SDK can fail before BRUTAL code is compiled, or it can reject the target framework requested by a package. Verify the version from the same shell in which you run dotnet restore and dotnet run; checking a different terminal session can hide a path or installation discrepancy.
Package restore cannot find a package
Check the package ID character for character. The documented starter packages are Ahwoo.Brutal.Core and Ahwoo.Brutal.Glfw; changing punctuation, capitalization, or the publisher prefix can produce a “package not found” result. Then verify that the project’s configured NuGet source is reachable and actually contains the package. A network or source-configuration failure is not evidence that the BRUTAL API is absent.

Restore reports a framework or version conflict
First confirm that the .NET 10 SDK is the one performing the restore. If the SDK is correct, read the conflict’s package and target-framework names rather than selecting a random version. The project documentation does not publish a complete compatibility matrix, so the correct version depends on the package release and the target framework in your project. Keep the complete error text when asking for help; the package name, requested framework, and selected version are all needed to identify the mismatch.
Restore succeeds but compilation cannot resolve a namespace
A successful restore only proves that NuGet downloaded the declared dependencies. It does not add packages that were never declared. Map the missing namespace to its subsystem using the package-family table, add only that dependency, and run the build again. If the namespace still cannot be resolved, check whether the code sample targets a different BRUTAL package generation or uses a namespace spelling that differs from the installed API.
Separate compile-time success from Vulkan and windowing runtime failures
A clean dotnet build or dotnet run compilation phase does not guarantee that graphics initialization will work on a particular machine. Rendering requires hardware and driver support that the C# compiler cannot test.
When the program fails while creating a Vulkan instance or device
- Confirm that the GPU and installed driver support Vulkan 1.3, the capability named by BRUTAL’s prerequisites.
- Install current graphics drivers for the operating system and GPU. A driver that exposes an older Vulkan version cannot be repaired by adding another NuGet package.
- Check whether the failure is a missing loader or an unavailable physical device. These are native runtime conditions, not managed dependency-restore errors.
When validation-layer messages are missing
The Vulkan SDK is optional for validation layers during development. Install it when you need those diagnostics, then enable the validation configuration used by your application. Do not treat the SDK as mandatory for the minimal GLFW example: the documented package path can be used without it.
When GLFW works but rendering does not
Window creation and Vulkan rendering have different dependencies. The GLFW package can be present while the Vulkan packages, a capable driver, or the native Vulkan loader is absent. Verify the rendering package family separately and test window creation before adding shader, allocator, or UI subsystems. This narrows the failing native boundary without changing unrelated references.

Understand the repository’s current source-build limitation
Readers often clone the repository, look for a solution file, and conclude that a missing dependency caused the build to fail. The project’s own README gives a different explanation:
“Project files, a solution and build scripts are coming. Until then use the NuGet packages, and use this repository to read and fork the code.”
This means the repository is the source for the published packages, but it does not yet provide the complete project-file, solution, and build-script layout expected by a conventional direct source build. If no solution or build script is present, searching for a generated file or repeatedly adding local references will not create a supported build path.
What to do instead
- Use the package-based console project as the supported build and learning path.
- Read or fork the repository when you need to inspect implementation details or experiment with source.
- Keep source experiments separate from the application that consumes the published packages, so an incomplete repository build cannot be mistaken for a NuGet failure.
- When a source change is essential, record the exact package version and source revision involved; the documentation does not establish a universal source/package compatibility matrix.
Direct source compilation should therefore be treated as incomplete or unsupported until the project supplies the promised project files, solution, and scripts. That limitation explains a missing solution more accurately than a claim that a particular dependency was forgotten.

“SDK not found” or “The current .NET SDK does not support…”
- Run
dotnet --versionin the failing terminal. - Install or select the .NET 10 SDK named by BRUTAL’s README.
- Repeat the clean console-project workflow before returning to the larger application.
“NU1101: Unable to find package” or an equivalent package-source error
- Compare the package ID with the documented spelling, including the
Ahwoo.Brutal.prefix where applicable. - Check the enabled NuGet source and its connectivity.
- Run restore again and preserve the package ID and source details if it still fails.
“The type or namespace name … could not be found”
- Decide which feature owns the missing symbol: core, GLFW, SDL, Vulkan, shader compilation, ImGui, audio, networking, or physics.
- Add the corresponding package family rather than every BRUTAL package.
- Rebuild, then check the namespace spelling and API version if the symbol remains unresolved.
“No Vulkan device,” loader errors, or validation-layer errors at startup
- Confirm that compilation itself succeeds.
- Verify Vulkan 1.3 capability and current drivers.
- Install the Vulkan SDK only if validation layers are needed, and distinguish a missing layer from a missing runtime driver.
No solution file, project file, or build script in the cloned repository
This matches the repository’s documented status. Use NuGet packages for the supported build and treat direct source compilation as an unfinished workflow rather than trying to infer a dependency from the absence of generated build files.

If the error belongs to tcp-brutal instead
The Linux kernel module has a completely different toolchain. Its Makefile invokes the kernel build tree under /lib/modules/$(KERNEL_RELEASE)/build and sets obj-m for Kbuild. A machine needs a matching Linux kernel development/build directory and the compiler and headers expected by that kernel. Installing .NET, BRUTAL NuGet packages, or the Vulkan SDK will not address these errors.
The tcp-brutal release notes also document kernel-specific compatibility work: changes for XanMod and BBRv3 headers, detection of Clang/LLVM-built kernels, versioned GCC installations such as gcc-14, and C-library header issues. Those clues explain why a tcp-brutal build can fail after a kernel upgrade even when the source itself has not changed.
How to identify the kernel-module branch
KERNEL_DIRpoints at a Linux kernel build tree.- The error names
tcp_congestion_opsor another kernel networking structure. - The Makefile mentions
obj-m, Kbuild, or a module target. - The build expects kernel headers, Clang/LLVM, a versioned GCC, or C-library development headers.
When these signatures appear, switch to the tcp-brutal project’s kernel-build instructions and make sure the kernel headers match the running or target kernel. Do not mix its troubleshooting steps with the C# framework’s package workflow.

Dependency errors become much easier to resolve when the environment is explicit. Record the operating system, the output of dotnet --version, the exact package IDs and versions in the project file, the enabled NuGet source, and the first complete error message. For graphics failures, also record the GPU, driver version, reported Vulkan capability, and whether the Vulkan SDK was installed for validation.
Test changes in this order:
- Project identity: C# BRUTAL or tcp-brutal.
- Toolchain: .NET 10 SDK for the C# project, or the matching Linux kernel build environment for the module.
- Minimal build: a clean console project for BRUTAL, or the module’s own Kbuild target for tcp-brutal.
- Feature dependency: add the package family that owns the API you use.
- Native runtime: only after managed compilation succeeds, verify Vulkan hardware, drivers, loaders, and optional validation layers.
Changing one layer at a time prevents a package edit from hiding an SDK problem and prevents a driver failure from being misreported as a compiler defect.
What a successful BRUTAL setup looks like
A supported first project has a normal .NET console project, uses the .NET 10 SDK, references Ahwoo.Brutal.Core and the integration required by its example (the documented starter uses Ahwoo.Brutal.Glfw), restores from a working NuGet source, and runs with dotnet run. Rendering adds the relevant Vulkan and shader packages and requires Vulkan 1.3-capable hardware with current drivers. Validation layers add the optional Vulkan SDK requirement only when you choose to use them.
If your cloned repository lacks a solution or build scripts, that is consistent with the project’s stated development status. If your log instead contains kernel build paths and module symbols, you are working on tcp-brutal, not the C# framework. Those two checks resolve the most consequential ambiguity before any dependency is changed.
