If a Crunchyroll episode won’t start, gets stuck loading, freezes, buffers repeatedly, or shows a black screen, first check whether the problem affects one episode, one device, or every device. Then try the reversible fixes: reopen the video or app, test another network, and sign out and back in on the affected device. These checks help narrow down whether the cause is a specific title, the device or app, your connection, or your session.
Work through the checks in order and change one thing at a time. That makes it easier to tell which step helped and gives Crunchyroll Support useful information if you eventually need to escalate the problem.

First, work out what is affected
Before changing settings or reinstalling anything, note the exact symptom and its scope. An endless spinner, black screen, repeated pauses, freezing, and a visible error are different observations; record what you see rather than guessing at a cause. Crunchyroll Help asks users to describe the problem, device, region, affected titles, and any error message when contacting support.

Record the symptom before you retry
Write down whether the episode never begins, starts and then stops, drops to a black screen, shows a loading indicator indefinitely, or displays a code. Note how long you waited and whether menus, thumbnails, and other episodes load normally. If the problem occurs only with a particular dub or subtitle selection, include that detail. These observations are more useful than a broad statement such as “Crunchyroll is broken.”
Try the quick fixes first
- Close and reopen the video. If it is playing in a browser, refresh the page. If you are using an app, close and reopen it.
- Restart the device if playback is still stuck. This is a low-risk way to clear a temporary problem before changing settings.
- Test another network. If possible, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or use another available connection. Note whether playback changes.
- Sign out and back in on the affected device. Crunchyroll recommends this as a session check. During this test, avoid signing in on multiple devices at once so the result is easier to interpret.
Use a simple sequence: close the episode, reopen it, restart the device, test another connection, and then sign out and back in. Do not perform every change simultaneously, because you will not know which one changed the result. If a quick check restores playback, note which change helped. If it does not, move to the instructions for your platform rather than repeating the same restart.
Fix playback in a web browser
Refresh, update, and restart the browser
- Update your browser, then restart it and try the episode again.
- For a hard refresh, press
Ctrl+F5on a PC orShift+Cmd+Ron a Mac. - Close extra Crunchyroll tabs and restart the browser. A fresh session can behave differently from a tab that has been open for a long time.
- Try a private or incognito window. If playback works there, a browser extension, stored site data, or another browser setting may be involved.
Check cache, cookies, and extensions
- Clear the browser’s cache and cookies, then sign in to Crunchyroll again. Clearing site data can sign you out, so have your login details available.
- Temporarily disable extensions, including ad blockers, and test playback. If this changes the result, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify whether one affects playback.
- Try another supported browser. This helps distinguish a browser-specific issue from a problem that also affects other apps or devices.
Crunchyroll Help’s browser guidance listed Chrome 117+, Firefox 117+, Edge 117+, and Safari 16.1+ as supported versions when that page was checked on October 13, 2026. Browser requirements can change, so check Crunchyroll’s current support guidance rather than treating those thresholds as permanent requirements.
What a browser comparison tells you
If a private window works while a normal window fails, stored cookies or an extension become reasonable things to investigate. If two different browsers fail in the same way, look next at the network, account session, device, or title. If the app on the same computer works but the browser does not, focus on browser updates, site data, extensions, and browser compatibility instead of changing router settings first.
Fix playback on a phone or tablet
- Force-close the Crunchyroll app and reopen it.
- Restart the phone or tablet, then test the episode again.
- Install available updates for both the operating system and the Crunchyroll app.
- Close other apps running in the background and test playback on another network if one is available.
- Check whether the same title plays in another episode or on another device. This helps separate an app problem from a title or account issue.
- If those steps do not help, consider reinstalling the app. Reinstalling is a later step because it takes more effort than restarting or updating.
For iOS, Crunchyroll’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking whether a VPN is enabled. Temporarily turn it off as a diagnostic step; a VPN may affect speed, compatibility, or content availability. Turn it off only for the test and compare the result rather than assuming it is the cause.

If you contact support about an iPhone or iPad, include the device model, iOS version, Crunchyroll app version, country or region, affected shows, and whether each show is dubbed or subtitled. Add a screenshot of any error. On Android, provide the equivalent device, Android, app, and region details.
Fix playback on a smart TV, streaming device, or console
Smart TVs and streaming devices
- Restart the TV or streaming device. If a normal restart does not help, fully power-cycle it by unplugging it briefly and then restarting it.
- Install available system and Crunchyroll app updates.
- Open another episode after the update and test again. If only one title still fails, record that title rather than assuming the whole app is unusable.
- If playback still fails, reinstall the Crunchyroll app and test again.
A full power cycle means shutting the device down, unplugging it briefly, reconnecting power, and starting it again. Do not repeatedly unplug a device while it is installing an update. Allow system or app updates to finish before judging playback.

Game consoles
- Restart the console and reopen Crunchyroll.
- Fully power-cycle the console if a normal restart does not change the symptom.
- If playback continues to fail, reinstall the app. You can also clear the console’s cache or storage using the platform’s own support instructions where that option is available.
Menu names and cache-clearing steps vary by device and console platform. Use that platform’s instructions for the exact controls; the available Crunchyroll guidance does not establish one universal menu path for every model. If another app streams normally on the same console, still test Crunchyroll after updating or reinstalling rather than assuming the console’s internet connection is completely ruled out.
Reduce buffering by checking the network
Repeated buffering can happen when a connection is unstable or competing traffic is using bandwidth. Test another network first if possible. If playback works there, focus on the original connection before changing app settings.
- Restart the router and check that it has power and an internet connection.
- Move closer to the Wi-Fi router, or place the router in a more central, open location.
- Pause competing downloads, video calls, game updates, and other heavy network use while testing. Disconnect devices that are not needed if they are contributing traffic.
- If playback settings offer a quality choice, try a lower video quality when the connection is weak or inconsistent.
- On a compatible computer, test with Ethernet if available. A wired test can help determine whether Wi-Fi is the unstable part of the connection; it is optional and will not fix unrelated app, title, account, or service problems.
Compare like with like when testing. Play the same episode for several minutes on the original Wi-Fi and then on another network. If only the other network works, record that result. If both networks fail on one device but another device plays, the device or app deserves attention. If every device fails on both networks, provide that broad scope to support rather than buying new networking equipment immediately.

Crunchyroll Help says VPN use is unsupported in its browser quality guidance. Temporarily turn off a VPN while diagnosing playback, then compare the result. This is a troubleshooting test, not a guarantee that the VPN is the cause. The iOS guidance also notes that a VPN can affect speed, compatibility, or content availability.

No purchase is required for the basic checks. An Ethernet cable is simply an optional diagnostic tool for a compatible computer or other device. If wired playback is stable while Wi-Fi repeatedly buffers, the comparison points toward wireless signal or congestion. It does not prove that replacing the router is necessary, and it cannot resolve a bad app installation, account-session problem, title-specific failure, or catalog issue.
Consider DNS only after simpler checks
Crunchyroll’s connectivity guidance includes instructions for changing DNS on Windows, Mac, Android, iOS over Wi-Fi, Apple TV, Android TV, and Xbox. It names Cloudflare DNS and Google Public DNS. Treat a DNS change as an advanced, optional step: follow the instructions for your specific device, and record the original setting so you can restore it if necessary.
Changing DNS is not a universal streaming fix. It does not by itself identify or resolve every possible issue involving an episode, account session, app, device, catalog, or service. Try the restart, network comparison, router check, and platform-specific steps first. If you change DNS, test the same episode afterward and undo the change if it makes no difference or creates other connection problems.
Avoid common troubleshooting mistakes
- Do not assume every failure is a buffering problem. A black screen or title-specific error may remain even on a fast connection.
- Do not test many variables at once. Changing the browser, router, DNS, VPN, and app simultaneously removes the useful comparison between steps.
- Do not repeatedly reinstall before updating and restarting. Reinstallation takes longer and may sign you out; use it after simpler platform checks fail.
- Do not guess an error-code meaning. Record the exact code and surrounding message instead of applying an unrelated fix.
- Do not test several account sessions at once during sign-in troubleshooting. Sign out and back in on the affected device alone so the result is easier to interpret.
- Do not assume a new router is required. Official guidance emphasizes restarting, placement, and reducing congestion; it does not establish that hardware replacement is normally necessary.

- The browser or app version and the device’s operating system version.
- The exact show and episode, noting whether the problem affects a particular dub or subtitle version.
- The observed symptom—such as a black screen, spinner, freezing, or buffering—and the exact error text or code, if one appears.
- Whether other episodes play, and whether the same device works on another network.
- The troubleshooting steps you have already tried and what happened after each.

Do not infer what an error code means from the code alone. The official troubleshooting guidance does not establish a universal diagnosis for individual error codes; include the exact message so support can investigate it in context.
A useful support message
Describe the sequence plainly: “On [device and model], using [app or browser version] in [region], episode [number and title] shows [symptom]. Other episodes [do or do not] play. The same device on [another network] [does or does not] work. I restarted, updated, cleared cache or cookies, tested another browser or network, and [describe results]. The exact message is [quote it].” This format gives support the scope, environment, comparison, and steps already attempted without speculating about the cause.

Why won’t one Crunchyroll episode play when other episodes do?

Can a VPN stop Crunchyroll videos from playing?
