1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBuild the pipeline in two layers: use OpenDocRouter to turn each source file into Markdown (optionally with layout metadata), then use LlamaIndex to represent, split, enrich, and—if retrieval is the goal—embed and store the resulting content. Keep file identity, parser/model version, and errors alongside the parsed text so you can trace and safely rerun documents. OpenDocRouter’s October 7, 2026 launch announcement describes the API and its launch-era limits; verify request fields, availability, limits, and prices against LlamaIndex’s current documentation before deploying.
What the pipeline does
Document parsing and retrieval are separate jobs. OpenDocRouter handles the first: it accepts a document and a model identifier and returns Markdown, with optional layout information. LlamaIndex handles the application-side work: its Document objects hold source content and metadata, its ingestion transformations can produce Nodes, and an ingestion pipeline can return those Nodes or insert them into a vector store.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That separation matters. A parser can produce readable text without producing retrieval-ready chunks, and a vector index cannot recover structure that the parsing step discarded. Design the data flow so you can change a parser or model without losing source identity or coupling parsing output to one particular index.

Plan the stages before connecting the API
For a maintainable implementation, treat parsing as an ingestion stage with explicit inputs and outputs. Keep the original file or a durable reference to it, record the parser result, then transform the parsed text for the retrieval or downstream application you actually need.
- Inventory inputs. Decide which file types you accept, whether the API must fetch a URL, and how you will handle documents that exceed the applicable limits.
- Submit a parse request. Send the chosen model identifier, document input, and any options such as layout using the current API request schema.
- Capture the result. Save returned Markdown and, when requested, layout data. Keep a status and error record even when parsing fails.
- Normalize the result. Create a LlamaIndex
Documentfor the parsed source and attach stable source metadata. - Transform it. Use an
IngestionPipelineto apply the splitting, metadata extraction, and other transformations appropriate to the application. - Index only when needed. Add an embedding transformation and vector-store destination when semantic retrieval is required; otherwise, the pipeline can produce Nodes without embeddings.
Check supported inputs and limits
LlamaIndex’s October 7, 2026 announcement names PDF, PNG, and JPEG inputs, including URLs to those formats. It states a maximum input size of 500 pages or 50 MB and says synchronous responses are supported up to 50 pages. These are launch-announcement figures, not a guarantee that the live service still has the same limits. Confirm the current API documentation for accepted formats, size interpretation, URL-fetching requirements, and whether limits differ by model or request mode.
Use synchronous parsing only when the document and expected processing time fit the current synchronous contract. For larger or slower jobs, the announcement describes an asynchronous mode that requires polling. It does not establish retry rules or polling intervals, so do not assume that a timeout means a job failed or that repeating a request is safe. Follow the live API’s job-status and retry guidance.
- Reject or route unsupported formats before submission rather than allowing an opaque downstream failure.
- For URL inputs, verify that the document is reachable by the service and that its link will remain valid for the duration required by the request.
- Set an explicit policy for documents over the current page or size maximum: reject them, split them upstream where safe, or use another supported route.
- Retain the original input, or a stable storage reference, so parsing can be repeated if a model or configuration changes.
Submit a parse request without exposing credentials
The launch example uses an authorization bearer token and an API_KEY environment variable. Keep the token in an environment-managed secret rather than putting it in source code, a notebook committed to version control, or a client-side application. The announcement identifies the /v1/parse endpoint and the request concepts—model, document, and optional layout—but does not establish a complete, current request-body schema here. Use the live API documentation for exact JSON field names and supported input forms.
curl -X POST "$OPENDOCROUTER_BASE_URL/v1/parse"
-H "Authorization: Bearer $API_KEY"
-H "Content-Type: application/json"
--data "$PARSE_REQUEST_JSON"
This shell example shows the endpoint and authentication pattern, not a copy-and-run body: populate PARSE_REQUEST_JSON with the exact schema documented for your selected model and input type. If you need layout, request it using the currently documented option (the announcement describes layout: true). Avoid treating an example copied from a launch post as a stable contract without checking the live API.

For production, wrap this call in a component that records a request identifier, source-file identifier, selected model and version, submission time, and final status. Keep transport errors distinct from parser failures and validation errors. That distinction makes it possible to identify whether a file was rejected before parsing, a request failed in transit, or the service returned an unsuccessful result.
Handle synchronous and asynchronous results
Synchronous response
For a supported synchronous request, capture the response and validate it before creating LlamaIndex objects. Check that the result contains usable text, preserve any returned metadata, and associate the output with the exact source and model version that produced it. A successful HTTP response alone is not proof that the content is complete or suitable for retrieval.

Asynchronous job
For asynchronous work, persist the job identifier as soon as the API returns it. A worker can then poll according to the live API’s documented status mechanism, update the job record, and pass completed output to normalization. Make polling bounded and observable: track attempts and elapsed time, surface jobs that remain pending beyond your operational threshold, and record terminal failures separately from jobs still in progress.
Do not invent retry behavior. The launch announcement confirms asynchronous processing and polling but does not specify retry semantics, idempotency guarantees, or a polling schedule. Check the current API contract before deciding whether a request can be safely resubmitted. In particular, distinguish retrying a status check from submitting a duplicate parse request.
Normalize parsed content into LlamaIndex Documents
A LlamaIndex Document is a generic container for source data and metadata. Use one to carry parsed text forward, while metadata preserves how that text came into existence. Useful fields for an application include a stable source ID, filename or source URL, document version or checksum, parser/model identifier and version, parse timestamp, and any layout payload or reference you need later. These are pipeline design recommendations; the exact metadata schema is yours to define.

Keep layout data separate from plain text when that makes downstream processing easier. The announcement says layout-enabled output can include grounded bounding boxes and elements arranged in reading order. It lists element classes such as title, section header, text, list item, table, picture, chart, formula, caption, footnote, page header, page footer, code, form, and key-value. Preserve the association between elements and the source page or region if your application depends on citations, visual review, or structured extraction.
Normalization is also the right place to apply quality checks. Flag empty output, unexpected document length, missing source references, and parsing errors. Do not silently turn an error into an empty Document: that can make an incomplete index look like a valid one.
Transform Documents into Nodes
LlamaIndex’s ingestion pipeline applies transformations to input data. The developer documentation describes transformation categories including text splitters, NodeParsers, metadata extractors, and embedding models; its examples include SentenceSplitter and TitleExtractor. Nodes are the chunks used by downstream framework components and inherit source metadata by default.
Choose chunk boundaries for the way people will query your content, not by copying a tutorial’s settings. A long narrative may benefit from sentence-aware chunks; a table, form, or code-heavy page can be damaged by a splitter that ignores structure. If you have layout elements, consider whether headings, tables, captions, or page boundaries should influence splitting. Evaluate the resulting chunks against representative questions and inspect whether answers retain enough context to be useful.
Keep metadata that helps explain or filter a result—such as document identity, section, page, or content type—when the parser output actually supplies it. Avoid attaching unsupported page or bounding-box claims to text that has no such grounding. After transformation, inspect a sample of Nodes for readable boundaries, preserved source metadata, duplicate headers or footers, and table content that remains understandable.

Embed and store Nodes only for retrieval
If your goal is a vector index, include an embedding model as a transformation and configure a vector store destination. LlamaIndex’s guide says an ingestion pipeline can return Nodes or insert them into a vector store and demonstrates a Qdrant example. The choice of vector database, embedding model, and retrieval settings depends on your application; the parsing announcement does not establish a universally best combination.
If another system consumes the parsed data, or you only need a list of Nodes for a later step, embeddings are not required. Keeping parsing and embedding as separable stages lets you re-embed content without paying to parse unchanged source files again, provided you retain the normalized parse output and know which parser/model version produced it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make reruns, updates, and failures manageable
The LlamaIndex ingestion guide documents caching of node/transformation combinations, asynchronous execution, document management using hashes and IDs, and parallel processing with num_workers. These capabilities can reduce repeated work, but behavior depends on configuration. Test cache invalidation and duplicate handling with representative documents before relying on them in production.
- Track versions. Store a source checksum or version alongside parser/model and transformation versions. A changed file or changed parser recipe may require a fresh parse or re-index.
- Separate retry from update. A failed transport attempt, a failed parse, and a changed source document are different events. Record them independently so a rerun does not accidentally create duplicate indexed content.
- Use bounded concurrency. Parallel workers can improve throughput, but set concurrency to fit API limits, available resources, and your error-handling capacity. The announcement does not specify a universal safe worker count.
- Cache intentionally. Confirm which inputs and transformations form the cache key. If model, layout option, or source content changes, ensure stale output cannot be reused unnoticed.
- Monitor the full path. Measure submitted, completed, failed, and indexed documents, plus time spent in each stage. A parse that succeeds but never reaches the vector store is still an ingestion failure from the application’s perspective.
Choose a parser route for your constraints
LlamaIndex’s documentation distinguishes three roles: OpenDocRouter is described as a way to host and switch among newer parsing models; LlamaParse is positioned as a managed document-processing platform with hand-tuned parsing tiers, enterprise controls, self-hosted deployments, schema extraction, and indexing APIs; LiteParse is presented as a local parser option. The framework is the application layer for agents and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), rather than a parser choice by itself.

| Option | How LlamaIndex positions it | When to assess it |
|---|---|---|
| OpenDocRouter | Hosted access to selectable parsing models, with model switching and versioned recipes described in the launch announcement. | When you want to compare hosted models or need access to a particular model, subject to current availability, limits, and terms. |
| LlamaParse | Managed parsing with hand-tuned tiers, enterprise controls, self-hosted deployments, schema extraction, and indexing APIs, according to the announcement. | When managed workflows, enterprise controls, deployment options, or schema-oriented features are central requirements. |
| LiteParse | Local parsing option; the documentation presents local parsing for offline or local workflows. | When offline operation or keeping parsing local is more important than using a hosted parsing service. |
| LlamaIndex Framework | Application layer for agents and RAG, including ingestion transformations and vector-store integration. | When building the pipeline around parsed content, regardless of which parsing route you select. |
There is no established universally best parser in these descriptions. Compare supported file types and limits, model/version availability, quality on your own documents, cost for your actual page and token mix, layout and bounding-box requirements, synchronous versus asynchronous behavior, data residency and deployment constraints, and compatibility with your LlamaIndex transformations and vector store.

The same October 7, 2026 announcement listed $5 in new-account credits, a $10 minimum paid top-up, a 5% processing fee, and $0.20 per million tokens to enable layout. It also said failed pages are not charged. Treat each as a dated vendor statement; confirm whether the credit is available to your account, the fee and minimum still apply, how layout usage is billed, and how failed pages are defined under current terms. The announcement also listed per-million input, cached-input, and output prices by model, but those rates should be checked live rather than reused as a fixed price list.
Validate the pipeline before indexing everything
Run a small but representative corpus through the complete path before a broad import. Include the documents that are most likely to expose structural problems: scans, multi-column pages, tables, forms, charts, and files with headers or footers if those occur in your data. The announcement identifies these as examples of document elements or use cases, but it does not provide independent accuracy results for them.

- Test the chosen model and layout setting on examples that reflect actual production documents.
- Inspect the returned Markdown and, when requested, layout structure against the original pages.
- Review resulting Documents and Nodes for missing sections, repeated boilerplate, broken tables, poor chunk boundaries, and retained metadata.
- For a retrieval use case, test representative questions and inspect whether retrieved Nodes contain sufficient context and trace back to the correct source.
- Test a failed request, an asynchronous job, and a rerun so your status handling and duplicate controls are known before scale-up.
These checks are more useful than selecting a model from a vendor cost table alone. Parsing quality is task- and corpus-dependent; a lower listed price does not establish that a model will preserve the structures your application needs.
