Start by checking your PC and game version
Record the storefront, game version, Windows version, CPU, GPU, RAM, display resolution, graphics settings, where the problem occurs, and any exact error text. Also note whether the game is installed on an SSD. Those details help distinguish a system that is below the listed requirements from a problem caused by a driver, overlay, storage, or particular game build.

See the current system requirements and the current requirements shown by your storefront. An earlier IO Interactive announcement from January 6, 2026 listed 32 GB RAM for recommended specifications, while the later support page lists 16 GB; use the later support page and current storefront listing rather than combining figures from different versions. The Steam listing says the Path Tracing update is live and PC specifications were updated to reflect it, so do not assume launch-era settings or performance expectations apply to that mode.

The official PC troubleshooting guide describes low FPS, uneven frame pacing, camera-turn stutter, loading or streaming hitches, input lag, black screens on launch, and crashes at startup, loading, or during play. The next steps below follow those symptoms. No single setting or fix is established as best for every PC.
Try the low-risk fixes first
- Restart the PC. This clears temporary issues before you make other changes.
- Install Windows updates, then restart.
- Update the graphics driver from your GPU maker, then restart.
- Verify or repair the game files in the launcher where you own the game: Steam, Epic Games Store, or Xbox app. The exact menu wording can vary by launcher version.
- Disable overlays and recording tools temporarily: Steam, Discord, Xbox Game Bar, GPU overlays, and capture software are examples. Retest before turning them back on.
These are the official guide’s initial performance checks and also apply to many launch and crash problems. Change one thing at a time where practical, so you can tell whether a step made a difference.

Fix low FPS or uneven frame pacing
Lower the most demanding settings in a useful order
If frame rate is low throughout play, lower resolution first. If that is not enough, reduce shadows, reflections, volumetrics, and view distance. Close demanding background applications and retest in the same area of the game. These changes trade image quality for performance; there is no universal preset that suits every configuration.
If you play on a laptop, connect it to power and set Windows power mode to Best performance. If the problem is specifically input lag or controls that feel delayed, try V-Sync or cap the frame rate slightly below your monitor’s refresh rate, and make sure overlays and recording tools are off.

Check for memory pressure
When heavy hitching occurs alongside texture pop-in, IO Interactive’s guide says a VRAM limit may be involved. Lower resolution and texture-heavy settings to reduce graphics-memory demand. This is a diagnostic clue, not proof that every hitch is caused by VRAM.
Reduce loading and area-transition hitches
The game’s published minimum requirements say an SSD is required. If it is installed on a hard drive, move it to an SSD if your PC supports one. Check that the destination drive has free space as well.

- Open Windows Disk Cleanup.
- Select the Windows drive, then select DirectX Shader Cache in the files-to-delete list. The precise labels can differ slightly across Windows versions.
- Run the cleanup, restart the PC, and test the game again. Shader caches may be rebuilt as you play.
For an upgrade, first check your computer’s supported drive type, form factor, interface, and available capacity. An NVMe SSD is not compatible with every PC, and changing storage does not guarantee a fix for crashes or low frame rates.

Troubleshoot crashes and launch failures
If the game will not launch or shows a black screen
After the initial checks, remove custom launch options. If the game is installed through Steam or Epic, the official guide also suggests testing the launcher as administrator. If antivirus interference seems possible, test only temporarily; if security software is implicated, add an exception for the game folder or launcher and re-enable protection. Do not leave antivirus disabled.
If the failure continues, a clean boot can help identify conflicts with background software. Reinstalling the game is a later resort, after file repair and the simpler checks. IO Interactive’s August 28, 2026 Game Update 1.1.1 announcement says it improved overall stability and fixed a PC black screen at launch that could cause a client crash. That fix addresses a specific reported failure; it does not establish that every launch crash is resolved.
If the game crashes during play
- Verify or repair the files, update the GPU driver, disable overlays, and restart.
- Temporarily return GPU, CPU, and RAM settings to stock if you use overclocks, then retest.
- Reduce demanding graphics settings and check system temperatures if crashes happen during gameplay.
- If crashes follow longer sessions, check for temperature-related throttling and test at stock clocks. Improve airflow or cooling if measurements indicate a problem; a crash after 10–30 minutes alone does not prove overheating.
If those steps do not help, the official guide also recommends setting Windows virtual memory to System managed, checking Windows Event Viewer around the crash time, and considering a clean GPU-driver reinstall. These are more involved than the first checks. BIOS updates are an advanced step: attempt one only if you are comfortable following the motherboard maker’s instructions.
Check for current updates before changing hardware
Look for game updates and check the official Player Support hub for known issues. The official Steam listing says Path Tracing is live and the PC specifications were updated for that feature. Since graphics features and requirements can change, compare your PC with the current listing before treating older performance expectations as a target. The developer’s January 6, 2026 announcement also named DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation; that announcement describes the technology, not independently measured performance on a particular PC.

If the troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, submit a request through the IO Interactive Player Support form. Include:
- Your storefront and country or region.
- The date and time of the problem, including timezone, and the exact error code or text.
- What you were doing when it failed, where it happened, and which steps you already tried.
- Your CPU, GPU, RAM, Windows version, and a DxDiag report.
A DxDiag report gives support a more complete view of the PC than a short description alone. Include the game version too if you can identify it.
