If Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse opens to a black screen, freezes during room changes, stutters when loading, or scrolls through menus by itself, start with the reversible fixes. Konami’s documented launch failure is tied to V-Sync being off while FPS is set to Unlimited; its fix is to lower Windows’ refresh rate below 60 Hz, enable V-Sync, close the game, and restore the original refresh rate. For controller problems, isolate every other input device before changing files. Stutter has no universal official fix, although an optional BepInEx mod reports shorter freezes on one test system.
Start with the symptom that matches your failure
| What you see | First action | Confidence |
|---|---|---|
| Black screen or failure to launch after changing graphics settings | Use Konami’s refresh-rate and V-Sync sequence. | Official workaround |
| The game stops at the title page after you saved and quit | Change the operating-system language to a supported language, such as English, then load the existing save. | Official workaround for affected system languages |
| Menus scroll upward, the controller is missing, or inputs appear without touching the pad | Disconnect every extra controller-class device, restart Steam, and test Steam Input both on and off. | Community diagnostic |
| Long freezes during room transitions or respawns | Check frame pacing first; consider the version-sensitive BepInEx Stutter Fix only after creating a rollback plan. | Community option |
The sections below explain each path without assuming that one workaround solves every symptom.

Fix a black screen or launch failure
Konami’s Known Issues Notice identifies a specific combination that can prevent the PC game from launching: V-Sync OFF and FPS set to Unlimited. The reliable recovery is performed temporarily at the Windows display level, not by editing configuration files.

- Close Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse and any launcher window that is holding it open.
- Open Windows display settings and select the monitor used by the game. Change its refresh rate to a value below 60 Hz.
- Launch the game. From the title screen, open Settings, then Video Settings.
- Turn V-Sync on. Do not leave the frame-rate option at the problematic V-Sync-off/Unlimited combination while testing.
- Close the game normally so the setting is written to its configuration.
- Return to Windows display settings and restore the monitor’s original refresh rate.
- Launch the game again at the normal refresh rate.
Konami says the game should then launch normally. If repeated attempts still fail, its notice directs players to contact Customer Support rather than continuing to cycle through increasingly invasive changes.

If the black screen appears only on a high-refresh monitor
PC Gamer senior editor Wes Fenlon reported on 14 October 2026 that his first boot produced a black screen and that the game would not display on a monitor above 120 Hz. He also observed a 120 FPS cap dropping sharply when cutscenes began. That is an individual launch-period observation, not a universal benchmark, but it makes refresh-rate isolation worthwhile when the official below-60-Hz sequence does not explain your setup. Test at a conservative refresh rate, enable V-Sync, and then raise the rate gradually rather than changing several graphics variables at once.
What not to conclude from a successful launch
A successful launch after enabling V-Sync does not prove that every frame-pacing problem is solved. The official notice addresses the launch failure caused by one setting combination; it does not publish a universal stutter fix or guarantee a particular FPS cap on every monitor.
Get past the title screen after saving
Konami documents a separate lock affecting some operating-system languages, mainly Arabic. In this case the game may save correctly but refuse to continue from the title page after you quit and return.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChange Windows to a supported language temporarily
- Close the game.
- Open Windows Settings and go to the language and region controls.
- Set the Windows display language and, if Windows requests it, the system locale to a supported language such as English.
- Sign out or restart when Windows asks for the change to take effect.
- Launch the game and try to continue using the existing save data.
Keep the original language noted so you can restore it after confirming that the save loads. This workaround changes the operating-system language; it does not convert or recreate the save. If the save remains inaccessible in a supported language, avoid deleting it while troubleshooting and contact Konami support.
Steam Deck display caveat
Konami says some Steam Deck interface elements can appear partly off-screen and that it is investigating a fix. A clipped button or panel on Deck is therefore not necessarily evidence of corrupted save data. Use the Deck’s display scaling and external-display checks to make controls visible, but do not assume those adjustments repair the underlying title-page language issue.

Fix controller detection and phantom scrolling
Reports on Steam describe three related symptoms: the game does not recognize the intended controller, menus scroll continuously (often upward), or a virtual joystick/HOTAS device injects input that you are not making. These recommendations come from community troubleshooting rather than an official controller bulletin, so treat them as controlled experiments.
Isolate the intended controller
- Exit the game completely.
- Unplug or power off every additional input device: spare gamepads, wheels, pedals, flight sticks, HOTAS equipment, and keyboards that expose game-controller functions.
- Disconnect virtual joystick or other virtual HID devices. If you use one, open Windows Device Manager and disable or remove the unwanted virtual joystick entry only when you know which device it represents.
- Restart Steam, then connect only the controller you want to test.
- Launch the game and check whether the title screen remains still and whether every button maps correctly.
This sequence distinguishes a game-side problem from an input-enumeration conflict. If the game works with one wired controller but fails with a wireless pad, the useful clue is that the connection or translation layer needs investigation; it is not proof that the game is permanently fixed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Toggle Steam Input in the game’s properties
On Steam, open the game’s library entry, choose Properties, and select Controller. Test the game with Steam Input enabled, then close and retest with Steam Input disabled. Restart the game between tests so each mode gets a clean device enumeration. Do not change controller firmware, remapping software, and Steam Input simultaneously, because you will lose the ability to identify which layer changed the result.
Try HidHide only as an optional experiment
One Steam user reported that HidHide stopped phantom UP input after it was configured to hide unwanted virtual controllers and HID devices while leaving the intended controller visible. This is a user report, not a guaranteed fix. HidHide can hide the wrong device if configured carelessly, so record which controller is meant to remain visible and undo the rule if the real pad disappears. First perform the simpler unplug-and-restart test; use device hiding only when a virtual device is clearly involved.
When a wired controller is useful
A wired USB controller that presents as XInput can serve as a diagnostic baseline because it removes wireless pairing and some translation layers. It cannot repair a game-side input bug, and a successful wired test does not prove that a particular wireless controller is defective. Use the comparison to decide whether to investigate Bluetooth, a dongle, remapping software, or Steam Input.

Diagnose stutter and poor frame pacing
Stuttering can mean several different things: a short hitch when entering a room, a longer pause while a respawn loads, repeated large frame-time spikes, or a cutscene that causes the frame rate to fall. Separate those cases before installing anything.
Establish a clean baseline
- Leave the official V-Sync-off plus Unlimited-FPS combination out of the test, because Konami links it to launch failure.
- Use one fixed frame-rate limit and record whether the hitch happens during room transitions, respawns, ordinary traversal, or cutscenes.
- Test with extra controllers and virtual HID devices disconnected; a device repeatedly generating input can make a frame-time problem look like a menu or gameplay fault.
- Change one setting at a time and restart the game after display-mode changes.
The official notice does not publish a universal stutter remedy. Avoid treating a single smooth session as proof that every scene will behave the same way.
What the community BepInEx Stutter Fix claims
The Nexus Mods “Stutter Fix” page describes a BepInEx mod that spreads memory cleanup over several frames. On the page’s stated test system—an RTX 4070 Ti, an i9-13900K, and 1440p—the author reports these before-and-after figures:
| Measured event | Reported before | Reported after |
|---|---|---|
| Room-transition freeze | 450 ms | 100 ms |
| Respawn loading screen | 5.4 seconds | 3.6 seconds |
| Large gameplay hitches over 100 ms | 0.8 per minute | 0.1 per minute |
These are the mod page’s measurements, not an independent benchmark or a promise for your hardware. The same page warns that individual numbers will differ.
Install only when you can roll back
- Back up your save data and note the game’s current installation state.
- Confirm that the BepInEx build and the Stutter Fix release support your current game version.
- Install BepInEx and the mod beside the game executable, following the release page’s file layout exactly.
- Start the game once and allow the stated first-launch setup delay of approximately 1–3 minutes. Do not force-close it merely because the first start is slower.
- Use the mod’s configuration path to change options only after confirming that the unmodified game still launches.
- Compare the same transition or respawn that exposed the hitch, using the same frame-rate limit and display mode.
If an update disables the affected fix, the mod page says the game may continue running even though the improvement no longer applies. Remove the mod using the page’s uninstall instructions when troubleshooting a patch, reporting a crash, or returning to an unmodified installation. Never leave an incompatible plugin in place just because the game still reaches the title screen.

Choose the least risky fix first
| Option | Status | What it changes | Reversibility | Version sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Konami refresh-rate and V-Sync sequence | Official | Windows display timing and in-game video settings | High; restore the original refresh rate | Low, because it follows the current known-issues notice |
| System-language change | Official for affected languages | Operating-system language/locale | High; restore the previous language afterward | Low, although supported-language behavior can change in a patch |
| Disconnect devices and toggle Steam Input | Community diagnostic | Input enumeration and translation | High | Moderate; Steam and driver updates can alter behavior |
| Hide virtual devices with HidHide | Community report | Which HID devices applications can see | Moderate; remove the hide rule if it masks the intended pad | Moderate |
| BepInEx Stutter Fix | Community mod | Game files and memory-cleanup timing | Moderate; requires uninstall and backups | High; a game update can disable the fix |
The order matters: use the official launch sequence first, then isolate input devices, then test frame pacing, and only afterward consider a mod. This preserves a known-good baseline and makes support reports more useful.
A practical troubleshooting decision tree
The game will not show a window
Reproduce the failure once, then apply the below-60-Hz and V-Sync-on sequence. If the game launches afterward, restore the monitor rate and avoid returning to V-Sync off with Unlimited FPS. If it still fails, stop changing unrelated settings and contact Konami Customer Support with your Windows display rate, GPU, and the exact point at which the launch stops.
The game launches but menus move without input
Exit, disconnect every extra controller-class device and virtual HID, restart Steam, and test the intended pad alone. If the problem persists, test Steam Input enabled and disabled in Properties > Controller. A wired XInput test can reveal whether the fault follows the wireless or translation layer.
Only transitions or respawns hitch
Record the duration and frequency at a fixed frame-rate limit. If the freezes match the categories measured by the community mod, decide whether its installation and rollback requirements are acceptable. If the hitch is new after a game update, remove the mod before drawing conclusions about the patch.

Platform notes and recovery habits
Steam on Windows
Steam provides the Controller properties and Steam Input toggle used in the community diagnostics. Keep the game closed while changing those options and restart Steam after disconnecting devices so the device list is rebuilt.
Xbox on PC
The Steam Input steps do not apply to the Xbox PC app. Use the same isolation principle—disconnect extra HID and controller devices, then test with one known-good pad—but do not expect Steam’s menu labels or translation layer to exist there.
Steam Deck
Expect that some interface elements may be partially off-screen, as Konami has acknowledged. For a launch or save problem, apply the relevant official remedy rather than interpreting clipped UI as a controller failure.

Keep a rollback record
- Write down the original monitor refresh rate and frame-rate setting.
- Record whether V-Sync was on or off before each test.
- List every connected controller, virtual joystick, wheel, pedal, and flight stick.
- Back up saves before installing BepInEx or any plugin.
- After a game update, retest without the mod before reinstalling it.
This record prevents circular troubleshooting and gives Konami or the mod author the information needed to reproduce the failure.
