Verify the game files first, install the current release, allow the first shader rebuild to finish, and use user/last_run.log for any remaining crash. Emulator users need a separate set of fixes for Vulkan and controller software.
First identify which PC version you are running
There are two very different troubleshooting paths commonly described as the Shadow of the Colossus PC version. The unofficial native port runs the x86-64 game code directly on Windows and translates PlayStation 4 GPU work to Vulkan. RPCS3 and PCSX2 run emulated releases and therefore have different files, graphics backends, and controller layers. Apply the native-port steps only to the native Windows launcher; apply the emulator sections to the corresponding emulator.

Check the native port’s prerequisites before changing settings
The documented baseline for the native Windows port is 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a Vulkan 1.3-capable NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel GPU with a recent driver. DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 are not supported renderers for this port. If the machine does not expose Vulkan 1.3 through its current driver, changing an in-game option will not correct the underlying compatibility problem.
Confirm the folder is the expected CUSA08809 dump
The launcher looks for a game directory containing all three of these items:

Use the CUSA08809 build expected by the port. The European 1.01 dump is preferred when you want the documented 60 FPS and 16x filtering modes. A folder that is one level too deep, points to a different title ID, or lacks one of those entries can produce an immediate close or a launch that never reaches the menu.
Do not expect Sony firmware in the download
The port does not redistribute Sony firmware. Its distributed archive therefore cannot supply the sound modules automatically. Audio requires your own decrypted libSceNgs2.sprx and libSceUlt.sprx files. The launcher can copy these from shadPS4’s user/sys_modules directory or from your own console dump. If the game starts but is silent, treat the missing modules as an audio-file issue rather than as proof that the whole installation is corrupt.
Use a clean crash-fixing sequence
Changing several graphics and emulator settings at once makes it difficult to tell which change mattered. Work through this order and keep a note of the result after each step.

- Install the current port release. Older builds contain crashes that have already been addressed. Version 0.0.13 fixed an intro/menu crash caused by requesting more textures than the available pool could hold. Version 0.0.12 fixed memory corruption that could close the game after loading a save.
- Launch once without interrupting shader work. After an update, the first load rebuilds shaders. The README warns that this first launch is slow and may stutter. Leave it running rather than force-closing it just because the opening load is uneven; later launches should use the rebuilt cache.
- Test the menu and a save separately. If the failure is at the intro or menu, the texture-pool fix in 0.0.13 is the relevant historical change. If it occurs immediately after selecting a save, make sure the build includes the 0.0.12 memory-corruption fix.
- Collect the log if the process still exits. Preserve
user/last_run.logimmediately after the failure. The project’s guidance is: "The game closed by itself? Open an issue withuser/last_run.log." Include the exact port version, Windows edition, GPU and driver, dump version, and the last action before the close.
A crash during the first post-update shader build is different from a repeatable close at the same menu or save. Record which pattern you see so a maintainer can distinguish cache generation from a deterministic fault.
Fix a silent game by supplying the two sound modules
What the files are
Sound is provided through the decrypted Sony modules libSceNgs2.sprx and libSceUlt.sprx. They are not ordinary redistributable DLLs and are intentionally absent from the port archive.

Where the launcher can obtain them
Use modules you own and have legally dumped. The launcher documents two sources: the user/sys_modules directory belonging to shadPS4, or your own console. Place or copy both required files using the launcher’s documented module mechanism, then restart the game. Supplying only one module can leave audio nonfunctional, so verify both filenames character for character.
Separate an audio problem from a startup problem
If the title reaches gameplay, renders correctly, and responds to input but has no sound, investigate the modules first. If it closes before the window or menu appears, return to the dump, release, Vulkan, and log checks; missing sound modules explain silence, not every startup crash.

Resolve Vulkan graphics faults in the native port
AMD green or pink fog and black or incorrectly colored characters
Release 0.57 documents an AMD-specific rendering fix for green or pink fog and for characters that appear black or have incorrect colors. The change makes AMD cards use the same 32-lane path used by NVIDIA. The maintainer also states that the fix had not yet been tested on an AMD card, so it is a compatibility improvement rather than a universal guarantee.
Update to at least the release containing that fix, reproduce the visual error, and record the exact AMD model and driver. If the artifact remains, attach user/last_run.log when reporting it. Do not describe the result simply as "AMD broken": the outcome can vary by GPU generation and driver.
Black screen after changing GPU-work-submission options
The launcher exposes GPU-work-submission controls for AMD and Intel systems. Its README says to enable the NVIDIA-only submission options under Image and FPS when needed, but to return the setting to Automatic if the display becomes black. Treat this as a reversible diagnostic change:

- Open the launcher and locate Image and FPS.
- Change only the submission option relevant to the experiment.
- Launch and check whether the scene renders.
- If the result is a black screen, restore Automatic before trying another variable.
These options affect how work is submitted to the GPU; they do not replace the required Vulkan driver and do not fix a missing game file.
Water reflections and the direct-memory-access option
The release also documents an option for full water reflections using direct memory access. In the title-demo test reported by the project, disabling it raised performance from about 54 FPS to about 59 FPS, approximately a 10 percent increase. The trade-off is flatter-looking distant water. This is a performance choice, not a remedy for a crash, missing sound, controller failure, or Vulkan device loss.
What to do when the native port still closes
Check whether the failure is repeatable
- Closes before the menu: verify the CUSA08809 folder, required entries, Vulkan 1.3 support, current release, and GPU driver.
- Closes during the first load after updating: allow shader compilation to finish once; the documented stutter is expected during cache rebuilding.
- Closes when opening a save: ensure the build includes the 0.0.12 save-load memory-corruption fix, then retry with the same save and capture the log.
- Renders but shows color corruption: apply the release 0.57 AMD fix if applicable, revert experimental submission controls to Automatic when necessary, and report the hardware-specific result.
- Runs with no audio: provide both decrypted
.sprxmodules.
Make the log useful
Keep the log from the failed run rather than launching repeatedly and overwriting the evidence. Record the port build, Windows 10 or 11 version, GPU and driver, whether the dump is EU 1.01 or another CUSA08809 build, the renderer (Vulkan), and whether the close happened during shader rebuilding, at the menu, while loading a save, or after a graphics change. The project does not publish a universal crash-free compatibility matrix, so this context matters when the symptom persists.
RPCS3: fix a Vulkan device-lost error before the menu
RPCS3 troubleshooting applies to the PS3 Classics HD release, not to the native CUSA08809 port. Issue #7774 documents a Vulkan "device lost" failure before the main menu. RPCS3 contributor kd-11 diagnosed a GPU-detection workaround: enable High precision Z buffer in the game’s custom configuration.
- Open RPCS3 and locate the Shadow of the Colossus game entry.
- Open that title’s custom configuration rather than changing a global setting.
- Find the GPU or graphics options and enable High precision Z buffer.
- Save the custom configuration and launch the game again.
- If Vulkan still fails, test another renderer to isolate whether the problem is Vulkan-specific. The original report states that OpenGL worked without crashes at that time.
This is historical emulator evidence, not a promise for every current RPCS3 build or GPU. Write down the exact RPCS3 version and GPU when testing, because emulator behavior changes as builds and drivers change.

Fix controllers in the native Windows port
Start with keyboard input
The native port supports DualShock 4, DualSense, and Xbox controllers, along with key remapping and mouse camera controls. Test the keyboard first. If keyboard input works while a controller does not, the game has booted correctly and the fault is in device detection or mapping rather than in the game files.
Verify the port’s own mapping
Use the mapping page supplied with the port and check each action, including camera movement, face buttons, triggers, and menu navigation. A controller that is detected but has swapped buttons is a mapping problem; a controller that never appears is a connection, driver, or input-layer problem.
Use a simple wired test device
A wired Xbox-compatible USB controller is a practical test accessory when a wireless pad, adapter, or unusual device is not detected. Connect it directly to the PC, close other remapping utilities, launch the game, and compare its behavior with the original controller. This test does not prove that every wireless device is unsupported; it separates the port from the extra software and radio path used by the original setup.

Stop Steam from injecting keyboard input
PCSX2’s official controller documentation warns that Steam’s built-in controller support can send unintended keyboard input to the PC when its desktop layout and emulator hotkeys overlap. The documented remedies are:

- Disable Steam controller support for the setup.
- Change Steam’s desktop layout and emulator hotkeys so the same buttons are not translated into keyboard commands.
Use one remedy at a time and test menu navigation afterward. Random character movement or menu actions while the physical controller appears correctly mapped often indicates this input-injection conflict.

Remove the EZFRD64.dll driver when plugging in a controller crashes PCSX2
PCSX2 identifies EZFRD64.dll as a buggy driver used by many third-party or knock-off controllers and adapters. It can corrupt memory and crash the emulator whenever the controller is connected.
- Close PCSX2 completely.
- Unplug the affected controller or adapter.
- Remove
C:WindowsUSB_Vibration, or uninstall the related driver through Windows Control Panel. - Reboot Windows after uninstalling the driver.
- Reconnect the controller and test PCSX2 before reinstalling any vendor remapping utility.
This procedure is distinct from Steam Input. If PCSX2 crashes at the moment a controller is plugged in, investigate the driver even when Steam is not running.
A practical decision tree for persistent problems
- Does the native launcher find
eboot.bin,sce_module, andsce_sys? If not, correct the folder or dump before testing graphics. - Does the game reach a menu? If it is silent, supply the two sound modules. If it closes, update the port and retain the log.
- Did the problem begin immediately after an update? Allow one complete shader rebuild before judging performance or startup.
- Is the symptom GPU-specific? For AMD color artifacts, use the 0.57 path and report the exact hardware. For a black screen after an experiment, restore submission to Automatic.
- Are you actually running RPCS3? Use High precision Z buffer in the title’s custom configuration for the documented Vulkan device-lost case, then compare another renderer.
- Does a controller cause wrong inputs or a crash? Native-port users should test keyboard and a wired Xbox-compatible pad. PCSX2 users should check Steam Input first, then the EZFRD64.dll driver if plugging in the device triggers a crash.
What information to include in a support report
A useful report is reproducible. Include the exact game path (native CUSA08809, RPCS3, or PCSX2), port or emulator version, Windows version, GPU model, driver version, renderer, controller model and connection type, the last action before failure, and the relevant configuration change. For the native port, attach user/last_run.log. For RPCS3, state whether High precision Z buffer was enabled and which renderer was tested. For PCSX2, state whether Steam was running and whether the controller used the EZFRD64.dll-related driver.
There is no published universal compatibility guarantee for every GPU, driver, dump region, emulator build, and controller adapter. Keeping those details with the symptom is the fastest way to distinguish a fixed historical bug from a hardware-specific or still-unverified problem.
