Most Control mod failures come from one of four causes: the wrong loader or game version, a missing dependency, files installed in the wrong location, or one mod overwriting another. The fastest reliable fix is to disable every mod, confirm the unmodified game works, then re-enable mods in small, documented steps until the first failing combination is identified.
Control uses several installation models rather than one universal plug-in system. Loose files loaded from /data/, add-ons placed beside the executable, and loader-dependent DLL components must be diagnosed differently. Follow the procedure below before changing a large load order or reinstalling the game.

Start with a clean, reproducible baseline
Do not begin by rearranging dozens of entries. First establish whether the game itself works without modifications. A clean baseline separates a mod problem from a damaged installation, a platform issue, or another non-mod cause.
- Disable every mod in your manager. If you installed files manually, move those files out of the game directory to a temporary folder rather than deleting them.
- Launch Control and reach the same menu, mission, or checkpoint where the failure previously occurred.
- If the unmodified game still crashes, stop troubleshooting mods. Verify the game installation through your platform, then investigate drivers, overlays, launch settings, or other non-mod causes.
- If the clean game works, close it without making further changes. Record the exact game edition and version shown by your platform before restoring any mod.
This baseline is also a rollback point. Keep the temporary backup and any manager profile until the modded setup has survived a normal play session.

Use the symptom to narrow the cause
The timing and scope of the failure usually indicate where to look first. “Installed” only means that files were copied or a package was added; it does not prove that the required loader is active or that the intended file is winning a conflict.

Find the first bad mod with incremental re-enabling
Once the vanilla game is stable, use a controlled experiment. The goal is the smallest reproducible case: the fewest mods that reliably cause the crash or missing effect.
- Make a list of every mod, its version, its installation method, and whether the manager reports it as enabled and deployed.
- Enable one mod and launch the game. Test the same location or action each time, not a different mission or save.
- Close the game normally, then enable the next mod. For large collections, use small documented batches, but keep the first failing batch and split it into individual items immediately.
- When a failure returns, disable only the last item or batch. Re-test to confirm that removing it restores the previous behavior.
- Write down the exact combination, crash timing, save or mission, and any log entry. Do not change load order, paths, and versions simultaneously; changing several variables destroys the evidence.
If two mods are individually stable but fail together, the problem is a combination or an overwrite conflict rather than a single broken package. Keep both disabled while you test their files and the authors’ compatibility instructions.

Open the mod’s current page and verify every requirement against your installation. Control mods can depend on a specific loader, game edition, game version, or another package. A file that is correct for one edition may be ignored or crash another.

- Game edition: Confirm that the page supports the edition installed on your platform. Do not assume that a package for one PC release applies to every release.
- Game version: Compare the required version with the version currently installed. A game update can invalidate a loader or an injected component even when the mod files have not changed.
- Loader: Install and activate the exact loader named by the author. A loose-file mod and an add-on/DLL mod do not necessarily use the same loader.
- Dependencies: Install prerequisite components first and check that the manager shows them as enabled and deployed.
- Installation path: Follow the page’s path character for character. A package can appear in a manager while its files are deployed to the wrong directory.
- Launch instructions: Some loader setups require particular launch parameters or platform settings. If the author documents one, reproduce it before testing other changes.
Control Plugin Loader discussions specifically show that launch parameters, DLL conflicts, and platform setup can determine whether a mod loads or crashes. Treat those details as prerequisites, not optional tuning.
Identify which installation mechanism the mod uses
Control’s mod ecosystem includes at least three distinct mechanisms. The correct placement and failure checks depend on which one the author selected.

Loose files: Control JPC Overhaul
Control JPC Overhaul documents a route that enables loose modded files from the game’s data directory and provides a Control-specific installation procedure. Follow that procedure rather than copying files into a similarly named folder. After deployment, inspect the actual game directory and confirm that the expected files are present under the documented /data/ location.

Add-ons: Control Unfiltered
Control Unfiltered uses an add-on rather than loose replacement files. Its shaders are replaced in process at load time, and its instructions call for copying control-unfiltered.addon64 beside the game executable. That placement is different from the data directory route.
Because the shaders are replaced at load time without changing the base game files, a clean rollback is to close the game and remove or rename that add-on. If the game crashes immediately after adding it, restore the vanilla baseline and then verify the add-on’s supported edition, version, and required loader before trying again.
Control Plugin Loader and DLL-based components
Control Plugin Loader is a separate Control-specific component. Its documented troubleshooting discussions include launch parameters, DLL conflicts, and platform setup. If a loader-dependent mod crashes before a menu appears, test the loader by itself on the clean game, then add the dependent mod. A loader that fails alone must be fixed before any dependent package can be evaluated.

Resolve overwrite and load-order conflicts
A conflict occurs when two packages target the same path or asset. The game may launch normally while the later or winning file silently hides the other mod’s change. This explains why one effect can be missing even though the rest of a package works.

- Open the manager’s conflict or deployment view, if available.
- Search for the asset associated with the missing effect or the package that fails to appear.
- Record every mod supplying that path and which file the manager marks as winning. Keep this record before changing the order.
- Read both authors’ instructions. Choose the intended winner only when the authors indicate which file should take precedence.
- Disable redundant or incompatible alternatives. If both are needed, look for a compatibility patch documented by the authors rather than forcing an arbitrary order.
- Deploy the selected arrangement, launch the game, and test the same reproducible scenario.
Automatic sorting can help with generic plugin rules, but it cannot replace reading Control mod instructions. Loose-file and add-on conventions do not always follow the assumptions of a generic plug-in sorter.

Follow the right recovery branch for each failure
Crash at launch or shortly after enabling one mod
Disable the mod and confirm that the clean game still starts. Re-check its loader, edition, version, dependencies, and exact placement. For an add-on, confirm that the file is beside the executable; for a loose-file package, confirm the documented /data/ path. For a DLL-based package, test the loader alone and review launch parameters and DLL conflicts. If the crash disappears only when another injected component is disabled, those two components form the smallest reproducible conflict.
Crash after adding a group
Remove the newest group as a unit and retest. If stability returns, split that group in half or, for the clearest result, add each item back individually. Keep the first failing combination. Changing several load-order entries while adding more files makes it impossible to tell which change fixed or caused the crash.
Mod is installed but has no effect
Check enabled and deployed status in the manager, then compare the installed path with the mod page. Confirm that the required loader is active and that dependencies are present. Finally inspect conflicts: a winning file from another package can hide the mod while leaving the game fully playable.
Only one effect is missing
Do not immediately reinstall the whole mod. Locate the specific asset in the conflict view and identify the package that wins it. If the winning file is intentional, keep that arrangement; otherwise disable the redundant package or follow the authors’ documented order. Test the single effect again before changing unrelated files.
Game still fails with all mods removed
Keep the mod files disabled and verify the game installation through the platform. Investigate non-mod causes before reinstalling anything. Reinstalling the same packages over a broken vanilla installation can obscure the original fault and create new conflicts.
Keep changes reversible and preserve useful evidence
Use manager profiles or disabled states whenever possible. They let you return to the vanilla baseline without editing base archives. Manual changes should be copied to a clearly named backup folder before testing, especially when a package instructs you to place files beside the executable.

- Whether each item was enabled and deployed.
- The installation path and mechanism: loose file, add-on, or DLL/loader component.
- The order in which packages were loaded when a conflict was present.
- What the game did and when: launch crash, menu crash, mission crash, missing effect, or normal result.
- The smallest mod list that reproduces the failure.
The Control save and configuration location documented for the loose-file route is AppDataLocalRemedyControl. Do not delete that location as a first troubleshooting step; preserve it when you need saves or configuration for a reproducible test.
How to report a problem that others can diagnose
A useful support report is a short experiment, not a screenshot of a large mod list. State that the vanilla game was tested, name the first mod or combination that failed, and include the exact game edition, version, loader, launch parameters, installation paths, and crash timing. Attach relevant logs when the loader or manager provides them. If only one asset is missing, identify the disputed path and the package marked as its winner.
Reports that omit the edition, version, or whether deployment was enabled force helpers to guess. Reports with a clean baseline and a small reproducible list let them distinguish a missing dependency from an overwrite or injected-component conflict.

Common mistakes that prolong troubleshooting
- Assuming a package is loaded because it appears in the manager.
- Putting an add-on beside the executable when its instructions require
/data/, or placing loose files beside the executable. - Installing a loader after the mod and never testing the loader by itself.
- Changing several load-order entries before identifying which file is actually winning.
- Adding a new batch immediately after a crash instead of restoring the last stable combination.
- Deleting base files or configuration data without keeping a backup.
- Continuing to reinstall mods after the unmodified game has already been shown to fail.

Fix Control mod problems scientifically: establish a working vanilla baseline, verify each mod’s edition, version, loader, dependency, and path, then re-enable packages incrementally. Use conflict views to determine which file wins, and treat loose files, .addon64 packages, and loader/DLL components as separate systems.
