Start by identifying whether the failure is limited to the game or affects Windows, then work from the least risky fixes: restart the computer, update Windows and hardware drivers, check system requirements, disable non-essential background software, and verify the game installation. For black screens, test windowed or borderless mode and investigate drivers, shader caches, overlays, security software, and mods. For save problems, copy the local save folder before changing Steam Cloud, deleting files, or reinstalling.
First determine what actually failed
“The game crashed” can describe several different faults. The boundary of the failure determines which fixes are sensible and how urgently you should protect data.

Only the game closes
If Windows remains usable and you return to the desktop, begin with game files, drivers, overlays, security software, mods, and settings. This is usually a game-process problem rather than evidence that the entire computer is failing.
The display goes black but audio continues
A black display with continuing sound often means the game or graphics driver stopped presenting a usable image while Windows is still running. Give the game a moment, try switching away and back if Windows responds, and then use the black-screen procedure below. Do not immediately delete files or disable Cloud while you are still trying to recover an unsaved session.

Windows shows a blue or gray screen, or the computer restarts
Steam describes blue- or gray-screen restarts as a problem with the computer, not Steam, the game, or the application. Treat overheating, hardware drivers or firmware, and damaged Windows system files as possible causes. A game-only reinstall is unlikely to correct a failure that takes down Windows.
The whole PC powers off or locks up
A sudden power-off, hard lock, or restart is a wider stability problem. Stop repeatedly launching the game until you have checked temperatures, updated drivers and firmware supplied for your hardware, and confirmed that Windows is healthy. If the symptom occurs in other demanding programs, record that pattern for a technician or the hardware manufacturer.
Use this low-risk order of operations
Make one change at a time and test after each change. That preserves a useful cause-and-effect trail and makes it possible to undo a change.

- Restart the computer. A full restart clears a stuck game process, pending driver state, and temporary graphics resources. Do not rely only on closing the game window.
- Install pending Windows updates. Restart again if Windows requests it before launching the game.
- Update hardware drivers. Prioritize the graphics driver and use the current driver offered for your exact GPU and Windows version. If the computer is unstable outside the game, check chipset and other platform drivers and any relevant firmware supplied by the computer or motherboard maker.
- Check the game’s minimum requirements. Compare the title’s required Windows version, processor, memory, graphics hardware, graphics API, and storage space with your computer. A machine that falls below a minimum requirement may never become stable through file repair alone.
- Close non-essential software. Exit overlays, recording or streaming tools, RGB utilities, hardware monitoring tools, and other background programs one category at a time. Temporarily test security software only according to its vendor’s safe procedure; restore protection immediately after the test.
- Verify the installation in the launcher. The Steam procedure is given in the next section.
- Retest without mods. Disable or remove third-party mods only after backing up saves and noting your mod list. A mod can make a title fail at startup or when a particular world is loaded.
This sequence follows Steam’s general launch guidance: restart, update Windows and drivers, verify files, disable non-essential software, and check requirements. It also keeps destructive actions out of the first pass.
Verify the game files in Steam
Missing or damaged installation content can cause crashes, missing textures, and startup failures. Steam’s support guidance says file verification checks that the game’s files are installed correctly; it can address missing content and some crashes.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the survival game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish, then launch the game before changing another setting.
Verification may reacquire files and can take time on a large installation. Some files can fail verification because they are local configuration files that Steam expects to differ from the downloaded version. That result does not automatically mean the installation is broken. If the same crash returns, record the verification result and continue with driver, software, mod, and black-screen checks rather than running verification repeatedly.

Fix a game-only crash
Separate a reproducible trigger from a random exit
Note what happens immediately before the crash: launching, loading a particular world, entering a menu, changing graphics settings, or playing for a predictable length of time. Test a new save if one can be created safely. A crash that follows one save or one mod points in a different direction from a crash that occurs before the main menu.
Remove interference without making permanent changes
Turn off overlays and recording features first, then test. Common examples include the launcher overlay, chat overlays, GPU recording, frame counters, RGB control panels, and hardware monitors. Close one group at a time so you know which change mattered. Re-enable software that proves unrelated.
Test security-software interference carefully
Security software can block a game executable, anti-cheat component, or save operation. Use the security product’s documented game or application exception process rather than leaving protection disabled. Make the test temporary, launch only the affected game, and restore normal protection afterward. If an exception is required, limit it to the specific executable or folder and keep a note of the change.
Check mods and configuration files
Disable all mods and launch an unmodified installation. If the game works, re-enable mods individually or in small groups until the trigger is identified. Preserve the original mod list and configuration before editing or deleting anything. A title’s own support page may specify a safe reset procedure for configuration files; follow that procedure instead of guessing at file names.
Consider a requirements or resource problem
Confirm that the computer meets the published minimum requirements and has sufficient free storage for the installation, updates, and saves. If the crash is accompanied by a system restart, blue screen, or gray screen, stop treating it as a game-only fault and investigate the PC environment.

Confirm whether Windows is still responsive
Listen for continuing game audio and check whether other applications respond. If Windows is responsive, avoid forcing a power-off until you have given the game a reasonable moment to recover. If the entire computer is frozen or restarts, use the whole-PC checks rather than repeatedly launching the game.

Try a less demanding display mode
When you can reach the game or its launch options, select windowed or borderless mode and lower graphics settings. Apply the change, restart the game, and test. A mode or setting that fails during exclusive full-screen initialization can prevent a usable image even though the installation is intact. The exact launch-option names are game-dependent; use the title’s support instructions when they provide them.
Validate the installation
Run Steam’s Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files procedure before deleting caches or reinstalling. Square Enix directs players with startup crashes or black screens to validate the installation, and the same first-line check is appropriate for other Steam titles.
Update or reassess the graphics driver
Install the current driver for the exact graphics hardware and Windows version. If the black screen began immediately after a driver change, document that timing and consult the GPU maker’s supported rollback or clean-install process instead of repeatedly installing random packages.

Shader-cache files can become damaged and produce graphical failures. Capcom specifically identifies shader-cache cleanup as a possible remedy. Use the game’s or graphics driver’s documented cache-cleanup method, and do not delete unrelated folders. The first launch after a cache rebuild may take longer while shaders are compiled again.
Test overlays, security software, and mods
Disable overlays and recording tools, test with security software handled through a temporary, documented exception, and launch without mods. These tests are reversible and can expose software that blocks rendering or the game’s startup sequence.
Protect saves before repairing or reinstalling
Save recovery has a higher risk than a graphics-setting change. Before deleting, renaming, reinstalling, changing Cloud settings, or accepting an overwrite prompt, make a separate copy of the local save folder.

Find the local save folder
Steamworks lists common Windows locations, but the exact path varies by game:
- Documents
- AppDataLocal
- AppDataLocalLow
- AppDataRoaming
- Saved Games
Use the game’s support page or documentation to identify the title-specific folder and file names. If you cannot identify it confidently, search those locations for folders bearing the game’s name or publisher name, then confirm the modified dates against your last session. Do not assume that the installation directory contains the saves.
Make a manual backup
- Exit the game and Steam so no file is being written.
- Copy the entire identified save folder, including subfolders, to an external USB SSD or flash drive.
- Add the date and computer name to the backup folder name.
- Keep the original local folder untouched until the recovered copy has been tested.
A manual copy gives you a fixed reference point. It is separate from Steam Cloud and cannot be silently replaced by a later synchronization decision.
Understand Steam Cloud before choosing an overwrite
Steam Cloud is a remote file-storage system for files configured by the game. Steam can synchronize those files after sessions and download them before a game launches on another computer. Cloud is not a universal, guaranteed snapshot of every file in a save directory; what it contains depends on the game’s configuration.
Why a Cloud prompt can be dangerous
When local and cloud copies differ, selecting the wrong direction can propagate an older or damaged copy. Treat the prompt as a data-recovery decision, not a routine launch choice. Preserve both local and cloud versions if the interface allows you to do so, and compare dates, file sizes, and known progress before choosing.

Disable Cloud only after making copies
Cloud can be disabled globally or for an individual game. If you need to stop automatic synchronization while investigating, first copy the local save folder and note the current Cloud status. Disabling Cloud does not itself repair a corrupt save; it only prevents synchronization while you work.

Choose the newest valid progress
Use the last session you know completed successfully as your reference. A newer timestamp is useful but not conclusive: a crashed session can write a newer, unusable file. If both copies appear damaged, retain them and escalate rather than overwriting one with the other. Re-enable Cloud only after you have a verified working local copy and understand which direction will be synchronized.

Test a new save without touching the old one
If the game reaches its menu, create or start a new game only after backing up the original saves. A new save that loads normally suggests the installation and basic runtime are functional, while one broken world or profile may be damaged or dependent on a missing mod. Do not delete the failed save to make this test.
Restore the mod and version context
Write down the mods, load order, game build, and launcher state used when the save last worked. A save created with mods can fail when those mods are absent or have changed. Reinstall only from the mod source’s current instructions, and keep the backed-up save outside any folder that an installer might replace.

Use Cloud deliberately
If the local copy is missing but Cloud contains a version from before the failure, allow the Cloud download only after preserving any files that are still present locally. If Cloud contains the damaged version, do not overwrite a known-good local backup with it. When the game offers no safe way to inspect both versions, contact the developer with both copies retained.
Whole-PC checks for blue screens, gray screens, and restarts
- Temperature and airflow: overheating is one of the causes Steam identifies for computer-level failures. Check that vents and fans are unobstructed and observe whether the failure occurs only under sustained load.
- Drivers and firmware: keep the graphics and platform drivers current for the exact hardware. If a firmware update is relevant, use the computer or motherboard maker’s instructions and do not interrupt the update.
- Windows health: install pending updates and note any system-file or update errors. A game reinstall cannot repair damaged Windows components.
- Scope: test whether another demanding application produces the same blue screen, gray screen, restart, or lockup. Repeated failures outside the game strengthen the case for qualified hardware or Windows troubleshooting.
Record the stop code or exact on-screen message when Windows provides one. Photographing the screen can preserve details that disappear after an automatic restart.

The table is a practical order, not a promise that one remedy will solve every title. Prefer the option that matches the failure boundary and carries the least data risk.
What to send when you need help
General checks are not a substitute for title-specific support. Steam recommends contacting the game’s developer or a local technician when its launch steps do not resolve the issue.

- GPU model and driver version.
- Whether the problem affects only this game or other demanding applications.
- Installed mods and whether the failure reproduces in a new save.
- The precise steps that trigger the failure and the time it occurred.
- DxDiag output and any crash-report folder the game creates.
Capcom specifically asks players reporting graphical problems to collect DxDiag and crash-report data. Keep original save copies and Cloud versions available; support may need them to distinguish a damaged save from an installation or driver fault.
