Fix a new PC game by matching the remedy to the failure: a game that closes to the desktop needs a different path from a launcher stuck on “Preparing to Launch,” a black display with Windows still running, or a restart of the entire computer. Start by identifying that scope, then check requirements and updates, repair the launcher and installed files, remove background conflicts, test display modes, and only then investigate Windows hardware or system files. This order prevents you from applying risky system repairs to what is really an incomplete download.
Identify exactly what failed
Write down what happens between clicking Play and the failure. The timing is often more useful than a vague message such as “the game does not work.” Microsoft treats a blank Windows display and unexpected restarts as Windows problems, while Steam documents game-launch failures separately from computer crashes. Use the symptom table to choose the first branch.

Separate a game black screen from a Windows blank screen
If you can move the pointer, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, or switch applications with Alt+Tab, Windows is probably alive and the game is the immediate suspect. If no keyboard shortcut works and the desktop never appears, follow Windows blank-screen recovery instead of repeatedly reinstalling the game. A screen that remains blank after a restart, or appears during normal desktop use, is not a game-only symptom.
Do the low-risk checks first
Before changing files or drivers, capture the exact title, launcher, Windows edition, graphics card, error text, and whether other games work. This gives you a useful comparison and prevents losing a message that support will need.

- Restart Windows once. A pending update, locked file, or failed graphics process can clear on a clean reboot.
- Disconnect nonessential USB devices temporarily, especially controllers, capture hardware, and unusual hubs. Reconnect them one at a time after the game starts.
- Make sure the installation drive has free space for updates and temporary shader or unpacking files.
- Do not repeatedly force-power-off a frozen computer while a disk repair or update is running. If Windows is completely unresponsive, hold the power button only as a last resort.
Check requirements, updates, and service status
Open the game’s published system-requirements page and compare your actual hardware and operating system with both minimum and recommended specifications. Steam warns that a computer at or near minimum requirements can still have launch or performance problems; “meets minimum” is not a guarantee that the title will start.
Verify the important requirements
- Operating system: Check the required Windows version and whether a 64-bit installation is needed.
- Processor and memory: Compare the model and installed RAM, not just the number of cores.
- Graphics: Check the GPU model, dedicated video memory, and required graphics API. A laptop may launch on an integrated GPU even when the title expects a discrete one.
- Storage: Confirm the game is fully installed and that the drive has additional working space for patches.
- Network or account services: Some launches require the platform client, sign-in, or an online service even for a primarily offline game.
Update in a controlled order
- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Install the current graphics driver offered for your GPU from its manufacturer, choosing a clean-install option only if the installer provides one and you understand that custom profiles may be reset.
- Open the game launcher and let it finish its own update before pressing Play.
- Check the platform’s service-status page when a launcher cannot sign in, download, or start any title. An outage cannot be repaired by reinstalling local files.
If a problem began immediately after a driver or game update, note that timing. It gives the title’s support team a reproducible lead and helps you decide whether to test a previous known-good driver supplied by the GPU manufacturer.
Repair Steam installations
Steam’s cache and file-verification tools address different failures. Clearing the download cache removes stale download metadata; verification compares the installed files with the platform’s copy and replaces missing or damaged data. Neither operation repairs an overheating computer or a broken Windows installation.

Clear the Steam download cache
- Open Steam and select Steam in the upper-left menu.
- Choose Settings, then Downloads.
- Select Clear Download Cache and confirm. Steam will restart and require you to sign in again.
- Try the game once. If it still fails, continue to file verification rather than clearing the cache repeatedly.
Verify installed game files
- In Library, right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to finish.
- Launch only after Steam reports completion. If files are reacquired, allow the download to finish before testing.
Verification can replace modified files. If you use mods, reshade packages, custom DLLs, or launch scripts, back them up and expect to reinstall compatible versions after verification. If one game fails while other Steam games launch, this title-specific repair is the appropriate first test; if every game fails, move to system and conflict checks.
Repair Epic Games Launcher installations
When the Epic Games Launcher crashes, cannot download, or will not launch titles, first check its service-status page and whether the launcher itself has an update. A platform outage or outdated client can imitate a damaged game.
Update and verify
- Exit the launcher completely. Use the notification-area icon to choose Exit, then confirm in Task Manager that no Epic Games Launcher process remains.
- Start it again and allow any client update to complete.
- Open Library, select the three-dot menu beside the affected game, choose Manage, and select Verify when that option is available.
- Wait for verification and any replacement download to finish before launching.
Menu labels can vary slightly by launcher version. If the client cannot stay open long enough to verify, record the crash behavior, test whether another title starts, and proceed to background-conflict and Windows checks.

Remove background software conflicts
Steam specifically warns that software modifying or monitoring system, disk, or network activity can interfere with launching. The same principle applies to any PC launcher. Temporarily close nonessential programs and test after each change so you can identify the conflict instead of disabling everything permanently.

- Game overlays, recording tools, frame-rate counters, and hardware-monitoring utilities
- RGB, peripheral, audio-enhancement, and virtual-device software
- Third-party security, firewall, VPN, or traffic-filtering tools that inspect the launcher or game
- Cloud-sync clients actively synchronizing the game’s installation or configuration folder
- Browsers and heavy creative or virtualization workloads consuming most available memory
Do not turn off security protection broadly or download replacement files from unofficial mirrors. If security software quarantines a legitimate game file, use its documented, per-application exception process and remove the exception if it does not solve the issue. A clean startup can isolate a conflict: disable non-Microsoft startup items, restart, test the game, then restore items in groups until the offending program is found.
Fix a black screen without making Windows worse
When Windows is still responsive
- Press
Win+P, then press the arrow keys andEnterto cycle among display modes. This is Microsoft’s recommended first shortcut for a blank display caused by output selection. - Press
Alt+Tabto leave the game, orCtrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager and end the unresponsive game process. - Reconnect the display cable, select the monitor’s correct input, and test one monitor at a time. A game can open on a disconnected or disabled display after a hardware change.
- Start the title in a windowed or borderless mode if its launcher exposes that setting. Once it renders, choose the monitor and resolution again from the in-game display menu.
A black screen that occurs only after a particular title switches resolution points toward a display-mode or graphics configuration problem. A black screen on the desktop, during sign-in, or across multiple applications belongs to Windows display troubleshooting.

When Windows itself shows a blank screen
Use another device to note any unsaved work before restarting. From the sign-in screen or desktop, open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. After Windows restarts, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select Safe Mode. Safe Mode loads a minimal set of drivers and services, helping you determine whether a normal startup program or graphics driver is involved.
If you cannot reach Settings, interrupt startup twice by powering off during the early Windows boot sequence; Windows should enter its recovery environment on the next start. Use this only when normal startup is impossible. In Safe Mode, remove a recently installed display driver or startup utility, restart normally, and install a stable driver from the GPU manufacturer if needed.

Steam states that blue- or gray-screen restarts indicate a problem with the computer, not Steam, the game, or the application. A game may trigger the failure by stressing hardware, but reinstalling the game does not fix the underlying instability.
Check heat and power
- Ensure every fan spins and that vents are not blocked by dust, a wall, or a soft surface.
- Return CPU, GPU, memory, and motherboard settings to their manufacturer defaults. Disable overclocking and undervolting while testing.
- Record whether the restart happens only under graphics load, during installation, or while the system is idle. Different timing points to different components.
Check storage
Back up important files first. Use Windows’ drive-error checking on the affected volume and watch for read errors, disappearing files, or unusually slow installs. Do not repeatedly run repair utilities on a failing drive without a backup; hardware replacement may be safer.
Test memory
Search Windows for Windows Memory Diagnostic, choose the restart-and-check option, and let the test complete. If it reports errors, test one memory module at a time according to the motherboard manual and stop using unstable settings.
Repair Windows system files
Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthAfter DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannowRestart Windows and test again. These commands repair Windows components; they do not validate game files. If they report corruption that cannot be repaired, save the exact output for Microsoft or your PC manufacturer’s support team.

Escalate a title-specific failure with useful evidence
Contact the game’s support team when the launcher, files, and Windows checks pass but the same title still fails. Include the title and version, launcher, Windows version, CPU, GPU, RAM, storage location, exact failure stage, error text, and the time of the last attempt. State whether other games launch and list every repair step already completed. Attach logs or crash dumps only through the support team’s documented upload method; do not post account tokens, license keys, or full personal folders.
For a whole-PC restart, contact the PC or component manufacturer rather than treating the game developer as the only support route. Mention temperature observations, memory-test results, drive warnings, and whether the failure occurs in other demanding applications.
