When a new medieval crafting game crashes, closes immediately, or shows a black screen, there is no single universal fix. The failure can be caused by the launcher, damaged game files, an outdated operating-system or graphics driver, antivirus quarantine, hardware below the game’s requirements, an overlay, or another background program. Start with the safest sequence: restart the computer and launcher, update the operating system and drivers, verify the installation, check antivirus quarantine, disable non-essential software, and compare your system with the exact store-page requirements.
This guide is intentionally platform- and title-neutral because the game name was not supplied. Use the game’s own support page for title-specific patches, launch arguments, save locations, and log paths. The steps below apply most directly to a Windows PC game launched through Steam; other launchers use equivalent commands with different labels.

Identify which failure you actually have
“It will not launch” can describe several different faults. Separate them before changing settings, because a black game window and a monitor that loses its signal require different diagnosis.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| What you see | Most useful first checks |
|---|---|
| The Play button changes briefly, then returns to Play | Restart, update Windows and drivers, verify files, then test without overlays or background utilities. |
| The launcher says “preparing to launch” and closes | Verify files and inspect antivirus quarantine. A failed download or quarantined executable is common. |
| A black window appears, but the monitor still works | Remove overlays, wait briefly for shader or first-run work, and use the game’s documented windowed or safe-graphics option if one exists. |
| The entire monitor reports “No signal” or goes dark | Treat this as a display-path or hardware problem first: check the cable, input, monitor, and graphics connection. |
| An executable or DLL is missing | Check antivirus quarantine, restore a trusted file, and verify the installation again. |
Record the exact error text and whether the launcher still reports the game as running. That distinction makes later support conversations much faster.

Use the safest troubleshooting order
1. Restart and make one clean launch attempt
- Exit the game and the launcher completely. If the launcher remains in the notification area, quit it there too.
- Restart the computer.
- Before pressing Play, disconnect unnecessary USB controllers, capture devices, hubs, and other input hardware. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, and the devices required for your display and audio.
- Temporarily close overlays, recording tools, performance tuners, proxy or traffic-filtering tools, hardware-monitoring utilities, and other programs that modify or monitor disk, network, or system activity.
- Launch the game once. Do not change several unrelated settings during this test; a clean result tells you whether a conflict was involved.
Steam Support notes that external devices and programs that modify or monitor system activity can interfere with the client. Re-enable software one item at a time after the game works so you can identify a specific conflict.
2. Install operating-system and hardware-driver updates
Outdated operating-system components and drivers are common launch causes. Install all pending operating-system updates, restart when requested, and then obtain the current graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer or your computer maker. Update other hardware drivers only through a trusted manufacturer or the operating system’s normal update channel.
Do not treat a driver update as proof that the game should run: a new driver can expose a different problem, and a computer at the minimum specification may still struggle. If the failure began immediately after a driver update, note that date for support rather than repeatedly installing random versions.

- Open Library and right-click the game.
- Choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files (older clients may call this Local Files).
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish, allow Steam to replace or reacquire damaged files, and then restart Steam before testing.
Verification can remove or reacquire files that were changed by a mod, an interrupted update, or storage errors. It does not replace the game’s own patching guidance, and it will not fix a machine that lacks the required graphics API or memory.
4. Check antivirus quarantine before adding exclusions
Steam says a missing-executable error is most commonly caused when antivirus software mistakenly identifies a game file as malicious and quarantines it. Open your security product’s quarantine or protection history and look for an item removed at the time of the failed launch.
- Restore or allow the file only when you obtained the game from a source you trust and the detection is clearly a false positive.
- If necessary, add the game’s installation folder to the antivirus exclusion list, following the security product’s documented procedure.
- Run file verification again after restoring or excluding the file.
- Never disable all protection indefinitely or allow an unknown executable simply because it has the game’s name.
If no quarantine event exists, do not assume antivirus is the cause. Continue with the remaining checks and keep the exact detection name for the developer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors5. Compare your PC with the exact store-page requirements
Open the game’s current store page and compare every listed minimum and recommended field with your computer. Requirements normally cover the operating system, processor, memory, graphics processor and API, and storage. Steam cautions that a system at or near minimum requirements can still experience launch or performance problems; “meets minimum” is not a guarantee of a successful first launch.

| Requirement to compare | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Edition, architecture, and supported update level | An unsupported or unpatched OS can fail before the game window appears. |
| CPU | Model and instruction-set support | A nominally similar processor may lack a feature the game requires. |
| RAM | Installed memory and free memory while launching | Background applications can leave too little memory even when the installed total matches the listing. |
| GPU and graphics API | Model, driver, and API such as DirectX 11 | The game may close if the GPU or driver cannot provide the required API. |
| Storage | Free space on the installation drive | Updates and shader caches need working space beyond the download size. |
As a concrete example of how a store listing presents these fields, the Steam page for Medieval Blacksmith (released April 14, 2025) lists 8 GB of minimum memory, DirectX 11 as the minimum graphics API, and 5 GB of minimum storage. Those figures describe that game and date, not every medieval crafting game; use your title’s current listing instead.
Fix a black screen without confusing software and hardware
When only the game window is black
If you can still move the mouse, switch windows, hear system audio, or see the monitor’s normal input indicator, the display connection is probably active and the game itself may be stuck during initialization.
- Confirm whether the launcher reports the game as running. If it immediately returns to Play, return to file verification and antivirus checks.
- Close overlays and recording or monitoring tools, then launch again.
- Use the game’s documented windowed, borderless, or safe-graphics setting if available. Do not invent a title-specific launch option; different games support different commands.
- Let the first launch complete if the game is compiling shaders or performing another documented first-run task. If there is no progress and the process remains unresponsive, end it and capture the error details for support.
- After the game opens, change one graphics setting at a time. Keep a working configuration before experimenting with resolution, fullscreen mode, or advanced effects.
When the whole monitor loses signal
A monitor that displays “No signal,” changes input, or turns off is not the same symptom as a black game window. First, reseat the display cable at both ends, try another cable if available, select the correct monitor input, and test another input or monitor. If possible, connect the display directly to the graphics card rather than through an unverified adapter or dock.

Resolve “preparing to launch,” instant closes, and missing files
Launcher starts and then closes
This pattern usually means the launcher handed control to the executable and the process exited before creating a usable window. Restart first, then complete operating-system and driver updates and file verification. Disable non-essential overlays and monitoring tools for a clean test. Check whether antivirus removed a file and whether the PC meets the exact requirements. Keep the crash time and the last visible message; a developer can correlate those details with its logs.
A file or executable is missing
Do not download a replacement DLL or executable from a random website. Check quarantine, restore only a trusted file, and verify the installation. If verification repeatedly reacquires the same file and antivirus removes it again, preserve the detection name and contact the game’s developer or your security vendor.
The game is running but no window appears
Look in the task switcher and the launcher status. A hidden window, an invalid fullscreen mode, or an overlay conflict can leave a process running without a visible frame. Use the game’s documented safe or windowed option, disconnect extra monitors temporarily, and remove overlays before changing advanced graphics settings. If the process consumes no CPU and never produces an error, collect a system report rather than repeatedly force-closing it.
Background software and peripherals that deserve a clean test
For one launch attempt, close software that injects an overlay, records the screen, limits frame rate, tunes GPU settings, scans files continuously, routes traffic through a proxy, or monitors disk and network activity. Also remove unnecessary USB input devices and docks. This is a diagnostic isolation step, not a recommendation to uninstall security software permanently.

Once the game launches, restore programs individually. The first application that brings the failure back is a strong lead. Record its version and the game version; both can change after an update.
When a patch or known issue changes the answer
Check the game’s official announcements and support page for the exact title and platform before applying unofficial fixes. A title-specific hotfix can supersede general troubleshooting, while a launcher update can change menu names.
For context, an official Going Medieval announcement identifies hotfix 0.16.16 as containing a crash fix and suggests a 60 frames-per-second cap, then a 30 frames-per-second cap, for a persistent animation issue. That announcement applies to that game’s version and problem; it is not a universal launch command for other medieval games.

If the sequence above does not restore the game, contact the developer’s support channel or a local IT specialist. Steam recommends providing enough evidence to distinguish corrupted files from a configuration-specific failure.
- An uncropped screenshot showing the complete error message, including the window title and any code.
- A system report with the operating-system edition and build, CPU, GPU, driver version, installed RAM, and monitor arrangement.
- The game’s exact version, launcher, installation drive, and the date and time of the crash.
- A precise description of the symptom: instant close, black game window, whole-monitor signal loss, or missing executable.
- The steps already completed, including file verification, updates, antivirus quarantine results, and which overlays or utilities were disabled.
- Any reproducible trigger, such as pressing Play, changing fullscreen mode, connecting a controller, or loading a particular save.
Keep the original screenshot uncropped and do not publish personal information that may appear in a system report. Do not claim that a fix worked unless you can reproduce a successful launch after the change.
What not to do
- Do not install unofficial DLL packs or replacement executables from download sites.
- Do not keep antivirus disabled as a permanent workaround.
- Do not apply launch options copied from a different game; option names and supported graphics modes are title-specific.
- Do not repeatedly reinstall Windows or the game before checking verification, quarantine, drivers, and requirements.
- Do not interpret a monitor signal failure as proof that the game files are corrupted.
The reliable approach is controlled isolation: establish the symptom, make one safe change, test once, and record the result. When the game still fails after clean software, verified files, current drivers, and a requirements check, the developer needs the evidence above to identify a title-specific bug or configuration conflict.
