The most reliable fix is to rebuild Fallout: New Vegas RTX Remix from one clean runtime release. Remove every old Remix DLL, launcher, and .trex folder; place the required files directly in the documented locations; launch through the intended xNVSE chain; then verify both runtime injection and geometry interception. A Remix popup only proves that the runtime loaded—it does not prove that New Vegas content is being rendered correctly.
If the game still fails, separate the symptom: a missing popup usually means a file or launch-path problem, a popup followed by a crash points to compatibility or an injector conflict, and “Failed to initialize renderer” requires GPU, driver, and compatibility-mode checks.

Do these steps in order. Do not combine files from different RTX Remix releases, and do not restore other injectors until the clean build starts reliably.

- Remove stale Remix files from the game installation. Delete older copies of
d3d9.dll,d3d9_remix.dll,NvRemixLauncher32.exe, and the.trexfolder. The documented FNV cleanup specifically calls for removing these items before extracting the selected release again. Search the game root rather than assuming the newest-looking file is active. - Extract one chosen runtime release. Use a single release as a complete set. Mixing a DLL from one release with a launcher, helper, or add-on from another can produce an immediate close, a black screen, or an apparently loaded runtime that fails during rendering.
- Put the DLSS 5 files at the required depth. In the documented FNV-DLSS5 arrangement,
nvngx_dlss.dll,nvngx_dlssnr.dll, andrenodx-dlss5.addon64must sit directly insideFallout New Vegas.trex. They must not be inside a second extracted folder. A nested path can look tidy in File Explorer while still causing a missing-file or nonfunctional-addon symptom. - Recreate the intended launcher chain. The recorded FNV setup uses xNVSE in the game root,
NewVegasRTXHelperinData, an FNV INI package, and an optional mesh patch. Launch throughnvse_loader, not an unrelated executable, when that is the chain specified by your package. Keep the helper and INI files matched to that package. - Check for the Remix popup. Start the game once with the clean installation. If no popup appears, stop troubleshooting visual quality and inspect the DLL location and launch executable first. The runtime has not demonstrated that it loaded.
- Test interception, not just injection. If the popup appears but the screen is unchanged or the game crashes while capturing, open the developer menu and use Debug View or Geometry Hash. A USD capture can provide a second check of whether scene content is reaching Remix.
- Restore extras one at a time. Once the clean build launches, add back an optional mesh patch or another mod individually and retest. Leave every additional
d3d9.dll, ENB-style injector, alternate renderer, or stale helper out until the baseline is stable.
This sequence distinguishes a broken installation from a rendering-compatibility problem. If the same failure remains after the clean test, keep the clean files in place while collecting logs rather than repeatedly swapping entire folders.

Why RTX Remix can load and still crash
NVIDIA describes RTX Remix as primarily targeting DirectX 8 and DirectX 9 games that use a fixed-function pipeline. That is a compatibility target, not a guarantee that every rendering path in a game will be handled correctly. Fallout: New Vegas can therefore reach the Remix runtime while still issuing content or techniques that produce unexpected rendering or a crash.
The distinction matters because the popup confirms runtime injection only. It does not confirm that every draw call was intercepted, that geometry hashes were generated, or that the scene can be captured. Treat “Remix loaded” and “the game is compatible” as two different tests.
Compatibility guidance also warns that technically compatible games may crash or render unexpectedly because individual games use different rendering techniques. The available Fallout: New Vegas reports document poor performance, occasional Alt-Tab crashes, and a black-screen boot issue, but they do not establish a crash rate or a universal fix. No representative prevalence figure has been published for Fallout: New Vegas RTX Remix crashes or black screens.

How to tell whether Remix is actually working
1. Use the popup as an injection check
Start with the clean build. A visible Remix popup means the runtime was found and loaded by the launched process. If it is absent, visual troubleshooting is premature: inspect the game-root DLL location, the executable being launched, and whether another launcher bypasses the intended chain.
2. Check geometry interception
When the popup is present but the game remains visually unchanged, open the Remix developer menu. Debug View and Geometry Hash checks can show whether scene geometry is being seen by the runtime. This is the appropriate test for “it loaded but nothing changed.”
3. Capture a USD scene when a crash occurs during rendering
A USD capture provides evidence that content reached the capture path. If the game crashes before a useful capture, retain the exact point of failure and move to the log-collection procedure rather than adding more rendering mods.

Windows, driver, and GPU checks
After the clean runtime and launch chain are correct, apply the baseline checks recommended by Bethesda:
- Install a current graphics driver appropriate for the GPU.
- Verify the Fallout: New Vegas game files using the platform’s file-verification function.
- Run the game with administrator rights for a test, especially if the installation is under a protected Windows folder.
- Add the game and its mod files to antivirus exclusions when security software is quarantining or blocking DLL loading.
Bethesda specifically warns that AMD RX users may be unable to launch with Adrenalin 24.4.1 and may need to return to an earlier driver. That warning applies to the affected driver and hardware combination; it is not evidence that every AMD system requires a rollback. Record the driver version before changing it so you can correlate the result.
Fixing “Failed to initialize renderer” separately
This message is broader than an RTX Remix failure. Bethesda uses it to describe a graphics-card initialization problem, so first confirm that Windows and the game are using the intended discrete GPU rather than an integrated adapter or a disabled device. Check the installed driver and make sure the monitor is connected to the GPU you intend to use.

If those checks pass, try Bethesda’s documented compatibility-mode launch path for FalloutNV.exe. Apply compatibility mode to the actual game executable, not only to a shortcut or a mod manager. Test once with the clean Remix files and no optional injector; otherwise a renderer error can be masked by a second failure.
Black-screen troubleshooting without making the installation worse
A black screen after a popup is especially easy to misdiagnose. Do not immediately add a shader pack, alternate renderer, or replacement DLL. First confirm the three conditions that can be checked independently:
- The required files are directly in
Fallout New Vegas.trex. - The game is launched through the package’s xNVSE, helper, INI, and
nvse_loaderchain. - Debug View, Geometry Hash, or a USD capture shows whether geometry reaches Remix.
If all three are true and the display remains black, the symptom may be an interaction between New Vegas rendering techniques and the Remix interception path. The dedicated NVIDIA black-screen issue confirms that the symptom is tracked, but its report does not supply a universal one-step remedy. Keep the clean configuration, test the GPU and driver checks, and document exactly when the screen goes black: before the menu, after loading a save, or when capture begins.
Preventing conflicts from other renderers and injectors
Every extra DirectX 9 injection layer changes the test. An additional d3d9.dll, an ENB-style injector, an alternate renderer, or an old helper can intercept the same calls as Remix. The authoritative first action is to remove the stale Remix set and return to one runtime. Only after that build launches should you reintroduce optional components individually.
When adding a component back, change one thing, launch, and test the same scene. If the failure returns, remove the last component and repeat the clean test. This gives you a reversible sequence instead of a folder containing several indistinguishable causes.
Comparing a clean Remix build with other options
If the clean runtime remains unstable, compare alternatives using the same criteria rather than judging only by whether a menu appears. A different Remix runtime build may alter stability, while a non-Remix renderer avoids the Remix interception path entirely; the latter is outside the evidence available here and should not be assumed to solve the same problem.

Collect the right logs before asking for help
Repeated reinstalling rarely adds information. For a persistent failure, record the RTX Remix/runtime build, Fallout: New Vegas edition, GPU model, graphics-driver version, launch executable, and complete mod list. State whether the popup appeared and identify the exact point of failure.
Attach these files when they exist:
d3d9.logFalloutNV_d3d9.logNvRemixBridge.log
Include whether the crash occurs at startup, when loading a save, during capture, or after Alt-Tab. That distinction lets someone separate DLL loading, renderer initialization, geometry interception, and a reproducible focus-switch failure. Keep the clean installation used for the log set so the files describe one known configuration.
What a successful repair looks like
A repaired installation has one consistent Remix release, no stale competing DLLs, correctly placed .trex files, and the intended xNVSE launch chain. The popup appears, geometry checks show that content is reaching Remix, and the game survives the same startup and scene-loading steps that previously failed. Add-ons are then restored individually, with a test after each change.
