Most Halo-64 problems have a short fix: use the 8 MB Expansion Pak (or enable it in ares), confirm every controller is assigned to the intended player, start with the Standard control scheme, and tune resolution and effects while watching the FPS counter. Halo-64 is an unofficial fan port of Halo: Combat Evolved multiplayer for Nintendo 64 hardware and emulators; it requires your own Xbox game files and is not an official Nintendo or Microsoft release.
What Halo-64 requires before troubleshooting
Halo-64 is built from a decompiled Halo codebase with a new Nintendo 64 renderer, menu, HUD and sound layer. It converts maps from the Xbox version and supports split-screen multiplayer, bots, Firefight and Rumble Pak feedback. You must supply your own Xbox game files; the port does not include them.

The launch requirement that causes the most confusion is memory. The game needs an 8 MB Expansion Pak, not the 4 MB configuration used by an unexpanded Nintendo 64. Windows Central has also reported the 8 MB requirement and the need for an original Xbox copy. On original hardware, install an Expansion Pak. In the ares emulator, explicitly enable it with the setting shown below.

Why does Halo 64 need the Expansion Pak?
The port has to hold converted Xbox map data, game objects, split-screen views, effects and the custom renderer in Nintendo 64 memory. The project documentation makes 8 MB a launch prerequisite rather than an optional quality upgrade. A 4 MB setup therefore cannot be repaired by lowering graphics settings; it must be replaced with the correct memory configuration.
Enable the Expansion Pak in ares
- Open ares and select the Nintendo 64 system configuration.
- Set
Nintendo64/ExpansionPak=true. - Restart the emulated system and launch Halo-64 again.
- If the error remains, confirm that the setting was saved for the same system profile and that you did not start a second 4 MB profile.
On original hardware, power off the console before fitting or removing the Expansion Pak. If another game also fails to recognize the memory upgrade, test the Pak and console separately rather than treating Halo-64 as the only suspect.
Why are my N64 buttons mapped wrong?
First check player assignment. A correctly mapped controller can appear broken when it is assigned to Player 2 or Player 3, while another pad is controlling the intended character. In the emulator, open the controller configuration, assign each physical pad to the matching player slot, and test one controller before connecting the others.
Standard control layout
| Input | Halo-64 action |
|---|---|
| Analog stick | Look and turn |
| C buttons | Move and strafe |
| Z | Fire in the default Standard scheme |
| R | Grenade |
| A | Jump |
| B | Reload or action |
| L | Melee |
| D-pad up | Weapon switch |
| D-pad down | Crouch |
| D-pad left | Zoom |
| D-pad right | Grenade switch |
| START | Pause |
The project also provides Bumper Jumper, GoldenEye and North schemes. These are complete alternatives, not separate controller drivers. Choose the one whose movement and firing arrangement matches your muscle memory before creating custom changes.
Adjust the actions that commonly feel wrong
- Choose normal or inverted look.
- Set crouch to held or toggled.
- Choose Z or R as the firing button.
- Adjust stick look speed and C-button look speed separately.
After changing a scheme, test walking, strafing, jumping, crouching, firing, reloading, zooming and grenade switching in a one-player match. Testing every action catches a mistaken player assignment or a single dead input sooner than starting a four-player game.
When a physical controller still misses a button
- Try a second controller in the same port.
- Move the original controller to another port.
- Verify the emulator assignment again.
- Test the controller in software outside Halo-64.
- If the fault follows the controller, inspect the hardware; if it stays with the port or emulator slot, investigate that connection instead.
Nintendo’s controller guidance recommends confirming the correct N64 controller model, installing available software updates, restarting, checking for wireless interference and seeking service when one button remains faulty. Those instructions target Nintendo’s own Switch Online N64 controller, so use them here as general hardware-isolation steps rather than Halo-64-specific support.

How do I fix the black screen or missing textures?
Separate a configuration problem from a renderer fault. Start with 3D resolution, then check display shape and interface overscan. A picture that is visible but blocky is usually a quality setting; a completely black or corrupted image may require renderer diagnostics.
Use 3D resolution as the primary control
| 3D RESOLUTION option | Documented rendering behavior | When to try it |
|---|---|---|
| Chunky | 160 pixels wide with doubled pixels | Lowest memory and pixel workload; use for severe performance problems. |
| Medium | 256 pixels wide | A step above Chunky when the image is too coarse. |
| Standard | 320 pixels wide | Balanced default-style choice for many setups. |
| High detail | Targets 480i when memory permits | Use only when the Expansion Pak and map workload leave enough memory. |
The README explains that high detail uses 480i where the map leaves room and otherwise falls back to 640×240 at 240p. Move the setting one step, restart the match if necessary, and check whether the failure changes. A lower mode that restores a stable picture is useful evidence that the issue is resource pressure rather than missing game data.
Correct aspect ratio and television cropping
WIDESCREEN is anamorphic 16:9 output intended for a display that stretches the image. It does not create extra horizontal detail. Leave it off when your display expects a 4:3 image, or enable it when the television is configured to stretch the port’s anamorphic signal.
HUD INSET moves interface elements inward. Enable it when a television’s overscan cuts off ammunition, score or other edge-positioned information. This setting changes placement, not the underlying render resolution.
Reduce terrain shimmer
If the game is playable but distant ground or textures shimmer, lower TERRAIN DETAIL. The documented renderer fades high terrain detail with distance to reduce shimmer; lowering the option also reduces work in large outdoor scenes.

Isolate a genuine renderer fault
Developer diagnostics include debug_no_level, debug_no_objects, debug_no_hud and debug_rdpq, along with related flags. Use them temporarily to identify which rendering phase fails: for example, a scene that appears when objects are disabled points toward object rendering, while a scene that appears without the HUD points toward interface rendering. These are diagnostic switches, not permanent player settings. Record the exact map, memory mode, resolution and reproducible steps, then report the case to the project instead of leaving a debug flag enabled.

- EASY TO USE: Insert into the original N64 console directly and ready to go
- MAXIMUM RAM: Double original 4MB of memory inside the console, for a total of 8MB right now
- BOOSTER: Increase screen resolution from 320 X 240 pixels up to 640 X 480 pixels and enhance graphics in N64 games
- NOTE: Required for the games like Donkey Kong 64, Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask and other N64 classics
Why does Halo 64 lag with four players or bots?
Halo-64 keeps its game simulation at 30 ticks per second, but the displayed frame rate varies with map complexity, the number of split-screen views and bot count. Four local views multiply rendering work even when the simulation rate is unchanged. Bots add game and rendering activity, while effects and high-detail geometry add more pixels or draw calls.
What each performance setting changes
| Setting | Work it removes | Visual or gameplay trade-off |
|---|---|---|
3D RESOLUTION |
Fewer pixels per frame | Image becomes softer or more visibly doubled at the lowest modes. |
ANIMATIONS set to half rate |
Updates characters, vehicles and weapons less often | Movement animation is less smooth, while game simulation remains 30 ticks per second. |
PARTICLES disabled |
Removes transient effects such as particle bursts | Explosions and other effects are less rich. |
VIEW MODEL reduced |
Cuts first-person weapon-model rendering detail | Held weapons look simpler. |
TERRAIN DETAIL reduced |
Reduces terrain geometry or detail work, especially at distance | Ground detail is less complex and may shimmer less. |
A repeatable tuning method
- Choose one map and one player.
- Display the FPS counter and record the normal frame rate and timing.
- Add additional players without bots and note the change.
- Return to the baseline, then add bots separately so their cost is visible.
- Change only one setting at a time, beginning with 3D resolution.
- Keep the setting that removes the largest frame-time spike without making the image unreadable.
This isolates the workload documented by the project rather than claiming an independent benchmark. The FPS counter reports frames and timings. For deeper investigation, the README documents debug_stats, profile and profiling scripts.
Suggested starting points by workload
| Workload | First changes |
|---|---|
| One player, stable image but occasional dips | Lower TERRAIN DETAIL or VIEW MODEL one step. |
| Two-player split screen | Lower 3D resolution, then test particles. |
| Three or four players | Use a lower resolution, half-rate animations and disabled particles before changing controls. |
| Bot-heavy Firefight | Use the same reductions, then compare with fewer bots to confirm that the workload is AI or rendering pressure rather than a broken map. |
Split-screen controllers and Rumble Pak setup
The port supports up to four local players, so every participant needs a working controller assigned to a player slot. Add pads one at a time and verify the assignment before launching a full match; this prevents a missing input from being mistaken for a frame-rate problem.
Recommended Free Tools
Halo-64 supports Rumble Pak feedback for shots, hits, explosions and vehicles. In ares, select Rumble Pak as the controller Pak. On original hardware, use a controller fitted with a Rumble Pak. If the game works but there is no vibration, check the Pak selection and test the same controller without other accessories before changing graphics settings.
Original Nintendo 64 versus ares: what differs?
| Area | Original hardware | ares emulator |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | Install an 8 MB Expansion Pak. | Enable Nintendo64/ExpansionPak=true. |
| Controllers | Use one working N64 controller per local player. | Assign each physical or virtual pad to the intended player slot. |
| Rumble | Use a controller with a Rumble Pak. | Select Rumble Pak in the controller Pak setting. |
| Display faults | Check television aspect and overscan, then adjust port settings. | Check emulator display scaling as well as WIDESCREEN and HUD INSET. |
| Performance | Use the in-game resolution and effect controls. | Use the same controls and also ensure the emulator is not running a 4 MB profile. |
How to fix a map or build failure
A launch problem and a build problem have different causes. If a rebuilt map fails while an older build starts, check the extracted-file path before changing video settings.
- Extract the Xbox map files from your legally owned game copy.
- Place the extracted maps in
build/xbox/disc/maps/. - Confirm the filenames and directory spelling, then run the project’s normal build command again.
- If map conversion or linking is killed, reduce Ninja parallelism.
- On a machine with less than 16 GB of memory, use especially conservative parallelism.
- If the build runs inside WSL and is terminated for memory use, increase WSL’s memory allocation and retry.
Map conversion and linking are memory-intensive. A missing map produces a path or conversion failure; a process killed during linking points more strongly to available build memory or excessive parallel jobs.

- Immediate memory error: switch from 4 MB to 8 MB.
- Game starts but the wrong player moves: correct controller-slot assignment, then verify the chosen control scheme.
- Only one action fails: test another controller and port before remapping every button.
- Black or corrupted scene: change 3D resolution, check widescreen and use renderer diagnostics to identify the failing phase.
- Visible but shimmering terrain: lower terrain detail.
- Interface cut off at the edges: enable HUD inset.
- Slow four-player match: lower resolution, halve animations and disable particles while watching the FPS counter.
- No vibration: select Rumble Pak in ares or attach one on original hardware.
- Rebuilt map will not load: verify
build/xbox/disc/maps/and reduce build parallelism if memory is exhausted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Halo 64 need the Expansion Pak?
Halo-64 requires the Nintendo 64’s full 8 MB memory configuration for its converted maps, renderer, objects, effects and split-screen views. A 4 MB console or emulator profile cannot be fixed through graphics settings. Install an Expansion Pak on original hardware, or set Nintendo64/ExpansionPak=true in ares and restart the emulated system.
Which ares setting enables the Expansion Pak?
Set Nintendo64/ExpansionPak=true in the Nintendo 64 system configuration. Save the profile, restart ares, and make sure Halo-64 is not being launched from a separate 4 MB profile.
Why are my N64 buttons mapped wrong?
Check that each controller is assigned to the intended player slot, then select Standard and test one controller in a one-player match. If the arrangement still feels wrong, try Bumper Jumper, GoldenEye or North, and adjust look inversion, crouch mode, firing button and stick or C-button look speeds.
How do I fix the black screen or missing textures?
Change 3D RESOLUTION one step at a time, check WIDESCREEN, and enable HUD INSET if only the interface is cropped. If the scene remains black or corrupted, temporarily use renderer diagnostics such as debug_no_level, debug_no_objects, debug_no_hud or debug_rdpq to identify the failing phase, then report the reproducible case.
Why does Halo 64 lag with four players or bots?
Each split-screen view adds rendering work, and bots increase activity beyond the 30-tick simulation. Lower 3D resolution first, then use half-rate animations, disable particles, reduce view-model detail and lower terrain detail. Watch the FPS counter and change one setting at a time.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I stop terrain shimmer without making the whole game blurry?
Lower TERRAIN DETAIL rather than immediately choosing the lowest resolution. The renderer fades high terrain detail with distance to reduce shimmer, and a lower terrain setting can reduce outdoor-scene work while preserving the rest of the image.
Best Value
- Store levels, characters, top scores and more with 256KB Memory Card

Why is my HUD cut off on the television?
Enable HUD INSET, which moves interface elements away from the edges affected by television overscan. It changes placement, not the underlying resolution. Use WIDESCREEN only when the display is configured to stretch the port’s anamorphic 16:9 output.
How do I fix missing Rumble Pak feedback?
In ares, select Rumble Pak as the controller Pak. On original hardware, use a controller fitted with a Rumble Pak. Confirm the controller works, test it without other accessories and verify that each player is assigned correctly.
Why does a rebuilt map fail even though the game used to start?
Confirm that your extracted Xbox maps are in build/xbox/disc/maps/ with the expected names, then rebuild. Map conversion and linking use substantial memory; reduce Ninja parallelism, especially on machines with less than 16 GB of RAM, and increase WSL’s memory allocation if WSL kills the build.
Does Halo-64 include the Xbox game files?
No. It is an unofficial multiplayer port and requires map data from your own Xbox game copy. A missing or incorrectly extracted map can cause a build or conversion failure, while a launch-time memory error points instead to the 4 MB versus 8 MB configuration.
The Bottom Line
For most Halo-64 failures, verify the 8 MB Expansion Pak first, assign controllers to the correct player slots, and start with the Standard layout. For video problems, adjust 3D resolution, widescreen and HUD inset; for slowdown, lower resolution, halve animations, disable particles and reduce view-model or terrain detail while watching the FPS counter. Keep Rumble Pak assignments and the build/xbox/disc/maps/ path in mind, and reduce build parallelism when map conversion exhausts memory.
