What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix CONTROL Resonant in the least disruptive order: restart Windows, install pending updates, confirm the game is on an SSD and that your hardware matches the published target, then update graphics drivers and Windows runtimes, verify the installation, isolate overlays and unstable overclocks, and only then consider a clean driver removal or reinstall. Remedy’s guidance is deliberately cumulative: each step increases the scope and potential impact of the change.
Start with the symptom and the lowest-risk remedy
Do not begin by deleting the game or using a driver-cleaning utility. The same visible problem can have different causes, and an early destructive step can remove useful evidence. Use this order as a triage map, then follow the detailed procedure below.

| Symptom | First low-risk action | What it depends on | Reversible? | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crash before the main menu | Restart the PC, install Windows and game updates, then check DirectX, Visual C++ and .NET components | Windows state, graphics driver, runtime files, blocked executable | Yes | The crash persists after runtime repair and file verification, or an error code identifies a deeper fault |
| Freeze or crash during play | Return CPU, GPU and memory settings to stock and disable overlays and monitoring tools for a test session | Overclocks, undervolts, overlays, recording and RGB utilities, cooling | Yes | The failure occurs at stock settings with background software closed |
| Intermittent stutter | Confirm the installation is on an SSD, close background applications and reduce demanding graphics options | Storage speed and free space, background load, driver behavior, rendered area | Yes | Stutter remains after a clean test environment and settings are below the published target |
| Low average frame rate | Compare your hardware with the appropriate official profile and turn off ray tracing before changing anything else | GPU tier, resolution, quality preset, ray tracing, cooling and drivers | Yes | Performance is still below target with current drivers and no competing applications |
Before changing files, let your platform finish cloud synchronization and back up saves where your launcher or installation supports it. Record the exact error text, when the problem occurs, and whether it happens in every area or only one scene.
Check the published PC floor before troubleshooting software
Remedy’s current final PC requirements apply to every profile: 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11, 16 GB of RAM and a 120 GB SSD. The SSD requirement is explicit; a hard-disk installation is not an supported configuration, even if the rest of the specification appears sufficient. Leave free space beyond the installed size so updates and temporary files can be created.

| Profile | Target | Quality and lighting | GPU information | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 1080p at 30 FPS | Low, ray tracing off | Not stated as a single model on the requirements page | Entry target, not a guarantee in every area |
| Recommended | 1440p at 60 FPS | Medium, ray tracing off | RTX 3060 Ti, RX 6700 XT or Arc B580 are named examples | The baseline for the normal quality target |
| Enthusiast | 4K at 60 FPS | High, ray tracing off | Not stated as a single model in the supplied profile | A substantially higher rasterization target |
| Ray-tracing minimum | 1080p at 30 FPS | Ray tracing enabled | Not stated as a single model | Ray tracing changes the performance requirement |
| Ray-tracing recommended | 1440p at 60 FPS | Ray tracing enabled | Not stated as a single model | Use only when your GPU and cooling can sustain it |
| Path-tracing enthusiast | 4K at 60 FPS | Path tracing enabled | Not stated as a single model | The highest published target |
These are targets, not laboratory guarantees. Remedy cautions that actual performance varies with drivers, background applications, cooling, component configuration and the area being rendered. A computer that matches the recommended GPU can therefore dip below 60 FPS in a complex scene without being defective.
Follow Remedy’s escalation order
1. Restart and apply pending updates
- Exit the game and close the launcher.
- Restart Windows rather than merely signing out or putting the PC to sleep.
- Open Windows Update, install all pending updates, and restart again if Windows requests it.
- Update CONTROL Resonant through Steam or Epic before testing.
A restart clears a stuck driver or service and ensures that an update is actually loaded. Test the game once after this step before making another change.
2. Confirm the SSD installation and available space
Use your launcher’s installed-game location to verify that the game resides on an SSD. Check the drive’s free space in Windows File Explorer. If it is on a hard disk, move it to an SSD before judging stutter or load-related freezes. Keep additional room for patch files and temporary data; the 120 GB figure is the published capacity requirement, not a recommendation to fill the drive to its limit.
3. Identify the GPU and update its driver
Press Win+R, enter dxdiag, and open the Display tab to identify the graphics adapter. Download the current driver from the appropriate GPU manufacturer—NVIDIA, AMD or Intel—using the vendor’s official support channel. Install it, restart Windows, and test the same game scene again.
Remedy identifies outdated graphics drivers as a cause of compatibility problems, crashes and poor performance. If the vendor installer offers a normal clean-install option, use it first; it is less disruptive than removing the driver manually.

- Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
- Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
- Includes Acronis cloning software
- 5-year limited warranty
4. Use Display Driver Uninstaller only as an advanced repair
A full removal is not the first-line fix. If a normal driver update has failed and symptoms point to a damaged or conflicting installation, Remedy references Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) as an advanced step.
- Create a Windows restore point.
- Download the current driver package for your GPU so it is available offline.
- Boot Windows into Safe Mode.
- Run DDU to remove the existing display driver, following its current prompts.
- Restart normally and install the driver package you downloaded.
- Restart once more before launching the game.
Do not interrupt the process or remove the driver without having a replacement package ready. If the system becomes unstable outside the game after this procedure, use the restore point or reinstall the vendor driver in normal Windows.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →5. Repair DirectX and Windows runtime components
Run Windows Update first. Remedy also points to Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer for missing legacy DirectX components. For launch or runtime errors, install the latest supported Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables in both x86 and x64 variants, update .NET Framework, and restart Windows. Installing only the package that matches the game’s apparent architecture can leave another dependency missing, which is why both Visual C++ architectures are relevant.
If an installer reports that a component is already present, choose its repair option when offered. Do not download runtime files from unofficial mirror sites.
6. Verify the game files
Verification replaces missing or altered files without removing your saves.

Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click CONTROL Resonant and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish, allow any download to complete, then restart the launcher and test.
Epic Games Launcher
- Open Library.
- Select the three-dot menu next to CONTROL Resonant.
- Choose Manage, then Verify.
- Let the scan and any replacement download finish before launching.
Verification should precede a reinstall. Reinstalling before repairing drivers, runtimes or conflicts often reproduces the same failure and costs considerably more time.
7. Isolate overlays and background conflicts
For one controlled test, close software that injects into games or continuously polls hardware:
- Steam, Discord and NVIDIA overlays
- Recording and streaming tools
- RGB-control utilities
- Hardware-monitoring applications
- Unneeded browser tabs and other heavy background programs
Temporarily disable the overlays rather than uninstalling them. Return CPU, GPU and memory overclocks or undervolts to their default values. A setting that is stable in another game can still fail here because workloads, shaders and temperature behavior differ.
If security software is demonstrably blocking the confirmed game executable, create a temporary allow-list exception for testing. Remove that exception if it does not solve the issue, and do not permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection.
Tune graphics against the target you can actually sustain
Start with the profile your hardware is intended to meet, then change one demanding option at a time. Turn ray tracing off when diagnosing ordinary frame-rate problems; it is a separate target with a separate hardware cost. Path tracing is more demanding still and belongs to the enthusiast profile.

| Situation | First graphics change | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Below 30 FPS at 1080p on Low | Confirm the SSD, current driver and stock clocks before lowering resolution further | You are already below the minimum published target, so software and hardware checks matter more than cosmetic reductions |
| Unstable 60 FPS at 1440p Medium | Disable ray tracing, then reduce the heaviest quality options and use an upscaler if supported | The recommended target assumes ray tracing is off |
| 4K High is inconsistent | Use the 4K enthusiast profile as an aspiration, not a promise; lower quality or resolution and test again | 4K/60 High is a higher tier than the recommended 1440p/60 target |
| Ray-tracing profile is too slow | Switch to the rasterized profile first, then reintroduce ray tracing at a lower resolution or quality | Ray tracing has its own minimum and recommended targets |
| Path tracing causes severe drops | Return to ray tracing or rasterized lighting | Path tracing is listed only in the 4K/60 enthusiast target |
The PC version supports uncapped frame rate, DLSS 4.5, FSR 4.1, ray tracing, path tracing, HDR and ultrawide displays. Availability and image quality depend on your GPU and display, so enable an option only when the hardware exposes it and compare the result in the same scene. An uncapped frame rate can make fluctuations more visible; a stable cap below your monitor’s refresh rate can be a useful diagnostic, but the official profiles remain the reference targets.

The game crashes immediately after launch
- Restart Windows and install pending game and system updates.
- Check that the installation is on an SSD and that Windows is 64-bit.
- Update the GPU driver.
- Repair DirectX, both Visual C++ Redistributable architectures and .NET Framework.
- Disable overlays and return hardware tuning to stock.
- Verify files in Steam or Epic.
If the crash produces an error message, preserve its exact wording. A launch failure that remains after these checks is a good reason to contact support rather than repeatedly reinstalling.
The game freezes or crashes after several minutes
Test at stock CPU, GPU and memory settings with monitoring, recording and RGB applications closed. Watch temperatures and power behavior without running an overlay in the game itself. If the failure disappears, re-enable background programs one at a time to identify the conflict. If it remains, verify files and check whether Windows or the GPU driver has logged an error.
Movement or camera motion stutters
Confirm the SSD requirement first, close browser tabs and injected overlays, and ensure the driver is current. Use the appropriate rasterized target with ray tracing off, then reduce demanding options until frame delivery is stable. Compare the same location after each change; moving between areas can produce different results because Remedy notes that the rendered area affects performance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAverage FPS is low even though the PC “meets the requirements”
Requirements describe a resolution, frame-rate and quality target, not a universal result at every setting. Check that you are comparing like with like: 1440p/60 Medium with ray tracing off is not equivalent to 1440p/60 with ray tracing or path tracing enabled. Confirm the named GPU tier, 16 GB of RAM, current drivers, SSD installation, cooling and background load. Only after those checks should you decide whether a hardware upgrade is necessary.

When a reinstall is justified
Reinstalling is the last local step, after updates, SSD checks, driver and runtime repairs, conflict isolation and file verification. Before uninstalling:
- Wait for cloud synchronization to complete.
- Back up saves where your platform and installation support local copies.
- Record launch options, graphics settings and error text so you can reproduce the test.
- Ensure the destination SSD has room for the full installation, patches and temporary files.
Install to the SSD, apply the latest game update, and test before restoring overlays, overclocks or custom tweaks. If the clean installation fails in the same way, the evidence points away from a simple corrupt file.
What to send Remedy Player Support
Escalate when the game still crashes, freezes or misses its target after the ordered checks. Include enough detail for support to reproduce the fault:
Recommended Free Tools
- Platform and launcher (Steam or Epic)
- Your user ID, if requested by the support form
- Exact error text and the point at which it appears
- Screenshots or a short video showing the behavior
- A DxDiag report
- An MSInfo report when requested
- Windows version, GPU model, driver version, RAM amount and whether the game is installed on an SSD
- Which troubleshooting steps changed the behavior
Do not permanently weaken security software or delete saves while waiting for a response. Keeping the original error and system reports makes the escalation more useful than another unrecorded reinstall.
