Composer memory failures on a VPS have two different causes: PHP may be refusing to let Composer allocate more than its CLI memory_limit, or the server may have run out of physical RAM and swap. Identify which limit you hit before changing anything. A scoped increase such as COMPOSER_MEMORY_LIMIT=2G composer install fixes the first case; a proc_open(): fork failed - Cannot allocate memory error usually requires checking RAM, enabling swap, or moving to a larger VPS.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Start with the exact error
Read the complete terminal output rather than treating every memory message as a PHP configuration problem. The wording tells you which resource to investigate first.

| Error or symptom | Most likely limit | First action |
|---|---|---|
PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of ... bytes exhausted |
PHP’s per-process memory_limit for the command-line binary |
Print the active CLI value, then run Composer with a finite higher limit. |
proc_open(): fork failed - Cannot allocate memory |
Operating-system RAM and swap; the kernel cannot create a child process | Run free -m and swapon --show; add swap or increase VPS memory. |
| The kernel kills PHP or Composer without a PHP fatal error | Host-wide exhaustion, often including swap exhaustion | Inspect memory pressure and processes, then reduce concurrency or upgrade the VPS. |
| Composer completes dependency resolution but an install script or Git command fails | A child process or external command, not necessarily Composer’s own PHP limit | Keep the Composer limit change, but diagnose the failing command separately. |
The two ceilings can occur together. Removing PHP’s cap does not create RAM, and adding swap does not change the maximum memory PHP is allowed to allocate.
Check the CLI PHP configuration Composer actually uses
Composer is normally launched from a shell, so a web server’s PHP configuration may be irrelevant. The command-line binary can load a different php.ini, use different extensions, and have a different memory limit.

- Check the PHP binary and version visible to your shell:
php -v
- See which configuration files that binary reads:
php --ini
- Print the effective memory limit, including whether it is unlimited:
php -r "echo ini_get('memory_limit').PHP_EOL;"
PHP defines memory_limit as the maximum amount of memory a script may allocate. If this command reports 128M, for example, a Composer process can fail at that PHP ceiling even when the VPS still has free RAM. If it reports -1, PHP has no configured allocation cap; a failure then points more strongly toward host memory, swap, or a child process.
Use the path shown by php --ini if you decide to make a persistent CLI change. Editing the php.ini used by PHP-FPM or Apache will not necessarily affect a shell command.

Using the Composer executable
COMPOSER_MEMORY_LIMIT=2G composer install
COMPOSER_MEMORY_LIMIT is Composer’s documented environment variable for PHP’s memory limit. Replace 2G with a finite value appropriate for the VPS; the value is passed only to this invocation.
Using a Composer PHAR directly
php -d memory_limit=2G composer.phar install
The -d option sets a PHP directive for that process. This form is useful when composer is not on the PATH or when a deployment script invokes a specific PHAR.

Use unlimited mode only as a controlled diagnostic
COMPOSER_MEMORY_LIMIT=-1 composer install
php -d memory_limit=-1 composer.phar install
Composer’s troubleshooting guidance notes that Composer internally increases memory_limit to 1.5G. Setting -1 removes PHP’s cap, but it cannot add RAM or swap. If the VPS is already full, the kernel can still reject a fork or kill the process, and an unrestricted command can consume memory needed by the database, web server, or SSH session. Use unlimited mode to distinguish a PHP cap from host pressure, or during a controlled deployment on a machine with adequate headroom; prefer a finite value for routine automation.

Make sure Composer 2 is installed
Composer 1 uses substantially more memory than Composer 2. The official troubleshooting guidance recommends Composer 2, preferably version 2.2.0 or newer where that version line is supported.
composer --version
composer self-update --2
Run composer --version again after the update and verify that the deployment user is calling the binary you intended. Multiple installations can exist in /usr/bin, a project directory, or a user-local Composer directory; updating one does not necessarily update another. If your operating system packages Composer, follow that distribution’s package update process instead of assuming self-update is available.
Use Composer 2 before increasing limits indefinitely. A newer Composer can reduce the baseline memory required, while a larger limit only permits a process to consume more.
Determine whether the VPS itself is out of memory
A fork failure is an operating-system event. To create a child process for Git, an install script, or another Composer operation, the kernel must find enough memory for the new process. Check the host while the failure is reproducible.

free -m
swapon --show
In free -m, compare total, used, available, and swap values. The available column is more useful than simply subtracting “used” from “total,” because Linux uses otherwise idle RAM for cache that can be reclaimed. A zero or very small available value, combined with no configured swap, makes a fork failure plausible. swapon --show lists active swap devices or files; no output means the VPS currently has none enabled.
Also account for services unrelated to Composer. A database, queue worker, web server, monitoring agent, and several simultaneous deployment jobs all compete for the same memory. Stop an unneeded workload or schedule the installation during a quiet period before concluding that Composer alone requires a larger machine.
Add a swap file when the VPS has no safety buffer
Swap can prevent an immediate allocation or fork failure on a small VPS, but disk-backed memory is slower than RAM. It is a safety buffer, not a replacement for sufficient physical memory. Ensure the disk has enough free space and that your provider permits swap files before proceeding.
The following commands create and enable a 1024 MiB swap file, matching Composer’s documented example. Run them with the privileges required by your distribution, commonly as root or through sudo:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems/bin/dd if=/dev/zero of=/var/swap.1 bs=1M count=1024
/sbin/mkswap /var/swap.1
/bin/chmod 0600 /var/swap.1
/sbin/swapon /var/swap.1
Confirm activation:
swapon --show
free -m
The file permission is deliberately restrictive because swap may contain pages from processes handling credentials or application data. If dd fails, check the path, free disk space, filesystem restrictions, and provider policy rather than repeatedly rerunning it.

Make swap persistent carefully
swapon enables the file for the current boot. To activate it after a reboot, add it to the persistence mechanism used by your VPS distribution. The exact /etc/fstab syntax and system-management steps vary, so consult the documentation for that operating system and verify the entry before rebooting. After a planned reboot, run swapon --show again; never assume a temporary activation survived.
Watch for continuous swapping. If the system spends most of its time reading and writing the swap file, requests and deployments can become extremely slow even when they no longer fail. That pattern means the host needs more RAM or a lower concurrent workload.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Run the installation reproducibly after the change
Once the CLI limit, Composer version, and host memory have been addressed, repeat the same deployment operation so the result is comparable. In production, install the versions already selected in the lockfile:
composer install --no-interaction --prefer-dist
composer install with a committed composer.lock avoids a fresh dependency-resolution calculation and keeps the deployment reproducible. Do not delete the lockfile as a memory remedy: resolving a new dependency graph can require additional work and can change the packages installed.
Capture the complete output. If Composer now reaches an install script, a Git checkout, an archive extractor, or another external command and that command fails, separate that failure from Composer’s dependency solver. Composer’s own PHP limit does not automatically control every child process. Inspect the command named in the error, its environment, its user permissions, and the host’s available memory at that moment.
Best Value
Choose between the available remedies
| Remedy | Resource changed | Scope and durability | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
COMPOSER_MEMORY_LIMIT=2G |
PHP allocation ceiling for one Composer run | Temporary and narrowly scoped | Does not help if the VPS has no physical or swap memory. |
php -d memory_limit=2G |
PHP allocation ceiling for one PHAR invocation | Temporary and narrowly scoped | Only affects the command launched with that PHP binary. |
Persistent CLI memory_limit change |
PHP allocation ceiling for all CLI scripts using that configuration | Durable, broad scope | Can let unrelated scripts consume memory and increase the blast radius of a mistake. |
| Swap file | Kernel-backed virtual memory capacity | Persistent after correct configuration; slower than RAM | Uses disk I/O and cannot compensate for sustained memory demand. |
| VPS with more memory | Physical RAM and usually more overall headroom | Durable infrastructure change | Requires a plan change or migration and should be sized for all services, not Composer alone. |
The correct choice depends on the observed failure. A PHP fatal with abundant available RAM calls for a scoped limit increase. A fork failure with no available RAM calls for host-level capacity, beginning with swap when appropriate. Applying every remedy at once makes it harder to know which constraint was responsible.
Troubleshoot the result by symptom
The fatal error remains after setting 2G
- Confirm the override was attached to the same command that failed. An environment variable exported in one shell or CI step may not exist in the next.
- Print
php -r "echo ini_get('memory_limit').PHP_EOL;"from the deployment context, not from an interactive account with a differentPATH. - Check whether a wrapper, alias, container entrypoint, or hosting panel invokes another PHP binary.
- Try Composer 2 and repeat with the lockfile. A dependency graph that genuinely needs more than 2G may require more host capacity rather than an unlimited setting.
The message changes to a fork failure
This change means PHP may now be allowed to request more memory, exposing the VPS’s real capacity limit. Run free -m and swapon --show during the failure. Reduce concurrent workers, enable swap if suitable, and rerun. Raising memory_limit again is not a substitute for available RAM.
The process is killed with no useful Composer message
Unexplained termination commonly occurs when the kernel’s out-of-memory handling kills a process. Review the host’s system logs using the tools provided by your distribution and correlate the time with free -m output. Stop competing workloads, lower deployment concurrency, or move to a VPS with more memory. Do not assume a silent kill means Composer’s limit was too low.
Only an install script or Git operation fails
Identify the external command in the output and run it in the same user, directory, and environment if safe. It may have its own memory behavior, need a writable temporary directory, or be unable to fork because the host is full. Composer’s limit setting cannot repair a missing executable, a permission problem, or an operating-system memory shortage affecting that child.
When a larger VPS is the right fix
Swap is appropriate for short bursts, but it should not be the normal working set for a production deployment. Upgrade the VPS when free -m shows sustained exhaustion, swap usage continually grows, deployments become unusably slow, or the kernel repeatedly kills processes even after unnecessary services are stopped. Size the replacement for the complete workload: PHP-FPM workers, the database, background jobs, monitoring, the operating system, and Composer’s peak usage all need headroom.
A larger allocation is a capacity decision rather than a Composer flag. Keep the scoped Composer limit in deployment scripts so a future package change cannot silently consume all available memory, and continue monitoring after the migration.
Quick Recap
Prevent the next memory incident
- Keep Composer 2 current and verify the version used by automation.
- Commit and deploy from
composer.lockwhenever the project uses a lockfile. - Use
--no-interaction --prefer-distin non-interactive deployments where those options fit the project. - Prefer a finite, command-scoped memory limit over a global
memory_limit=-1. - Check
free -mandswapon --showbefore a large dependency update or migration. - Schedule memory-intensive installs away from database backups, queue bursts, and simultaneous deployment jobs.
- Keep enough disk space for a swap file and temporary package archives, while monitoring swap activity rather than merely its existence.
- Record which PHP binary,
php.ini, Composer binary, and deployment user are used so a later operator can reproduce the same environment.
A practical recovery sequence
- Copy the exact error and determine whether it is a PHP “allowed memory size” failure or an operating-system fork failure.
- Run
php -v,php --ini, and theini_getcommand to identify the active CLI configuration. - Verify Composer with
composer --version; update to Composer 2 where necessary. - Retry once with
COMPOSER_MEMORY_LIMIT=2G composer install, or use the equivalentphp -dcommand for a PHAR. - If the error is a fork failure or the process is killed, inspect
free -mandswapon --showwhile the workload is active. - Add and persist swap when the VPS lacks a reasonable buffer and the disk and operating system support it.
- Rerun
composer install --no-interaction --prefer-distwithout deletingcomposer.lock. - If RAM and swap remain exhausted, reduce concurrent work or choose a VPS plan with more memory.
- If an external install script or Git command fails, troubleshoot that child process independently.
