Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMost “Gmail socket” failures on an Ubuntu mail server have one of two causes: Postfix cannot open Dovecot’s local authentication socket, or Gmail cannot complete a network, TLS, or account-authentication exchange. Separate those paths first. A local error mentions private/auth, smtpd_sasl_path, permissions, or “SASL per-connection initialization failed.” A remote Gmail error mentions timeouts, STARTTLS, or status codes such as 530, 534, 535, or 504.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
The standard local repair is to make Dovecot create /var/spool/postfix/private/auth, give it mode 0660 with user and group postfix, and point Postfix to private/auth (a path relative to Postfix’s queue directory). Then verify the advertised SMTP capabilities and perform one controlled authenticated send. Do not disable TLS or relay restrictions to conceal an authentication problem.

Understand which connection is failing
In a typical Ubuntu submission setup, a mail client connects to Postfix, Postfix asks Dovecot to verify the credentials through a Unix-domain socket, and Postfix accepts or rejects the message. Gmail may be the client, the destination, or an outbound relay, so the words “Gmail socket error” do not identify a single failure point.
| What you see | Likely layer | First checks |
|---|---|---|
private/auth, smtpd_sasl_path, “SASL per-connection initialization failed,” “permission denied,” or “no such file” |
Local Postfix–Dovecot authentication | Listener definition, socket existence, owner/mode, and Postfix chroot visibility |
connect to ...gmail... timed out |
Outbound network path | DNS, IPv4/IPv6 routing, firewall egress, and destination port |
| Gmail status 530, 534, 535, or 504 | TLS or remote account policy | STARTTLS/SSL mode, account name, OAuth or app-password requirements, and Workspace policy |
Check the mail log at the same time as the client error. On Ubuntu it is commonly /var/log/mail.log, although a different syslog or journald configuration may be in use. The Postfix process name and exact status code usually tell you whether to stay on the server or investigate Gmail’s connection.

Install the components required for local SASL
Install Postfix and Dovecot’s core package on the Ubuntu host that accepts SMTP submissions:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install postfix dovecot-core
During Postfix’s package configuration, select the mail-server role that matches your deployment and provide the server’s mail name. Add Dovecot IMAP or POP packages only if the server must provide those protocols; they are not required just to expose the authentication socket to Postfix.
Confirm that both services exist before editing configuration:
systemctl status postfix
dovecot --version
systemctl status dovecot
A failed service at this stage is more fundamental than a Gmail login failure. Read the unit’s journal, correct syntax or package problems, and only then continue to SASL settings.
Create Dovecot’s Postfix authentication socket
Set the listener in 10-master.conf
Open /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-master.conf. Inside the service auth block, define a listener at the path inside Postfix’s queue directory:
service auth {
unix_listener /var/spool/postfix/private/auth {
mode = 0660
user = postfix
group = postfix
}
}
The absolute path is intentional. Postfix’s SMTP service normally runs with /var/spool/postfix as its queue directory, so its configuration should use the relative path private/auth. If Dovecot instead creates a socket somewhere such as /run/dovecot, Postfix will not find it merely because the socket exists.

Check the resulting file
Restart or reload Dovecot after saving the file, then inspect the socket:
sudo systemctl restart dovecot
sudo ls -l /var/spool/postfix/private/auth
sudo stat /var/spool/postfix/private/auth
The expected mode is normally srw-rw---- (numeric mode 0660), with postfix as both owner and group. A different owner or a mode that removes access for the Postfix process can produce “permission denied” even when the pathname is correct. If the file is absent, inspect Dovecot’s status and journal for a configuration parse error or a failure to create the listener directory.
Point Postfix at Dovecot and enable the needed mechanisms
Set SASL options in main.cf
In /etc/postfix/main.cf, use Dovecot as the SASL provider and reference the socket relative to the queue directory:
smtpd_sasl_type = dovecot
smtpd_sasl_path = private/auth
smtpd_sasl_auth_enable = yes
For clients that use the traditional LOGIN exchange, Dovecot must advertise it. In /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-auth.conf set:
auth_mechanisms = plain login
Use only mechanisms appropriate for the TLS policy. PLAIN and LOGIN expose credentials to the server during the protocol exchange, so they must be used over TLS. Dovecot and Postfix can advertise additional mechanisms when deliberately configured, but adding mechanisms at random does not fix a missing socket.
Keep relay restrictions enabled
Authentication and relay authorization are separate controls. Retain a restriction that permits authenticated clients, permits trusted local networks where intended, and rejects unauthorised destinations. A commonly documented form is:

On releases that use the newer relay policy, put the equivalent rules in smtpd_relay_restrictions and keep reject_unauth_destination. Never remove the rejection rule as a troubleshooting shortcut; an open relay can be abused within minutes.
Reload safely and read the first useful log line
Validate and reload both daemons after changes:
sudo postfix check
sudo doveconf -n
sudo systemctl restart dovecot
sudo systemctl reload postfix
sudo systemctl status dovecot postfix
postfix check catches ownership and configuration issues in the Postfix queue. doveconf -n prints the effective Dovecot configuration and helps reveal an include file overriding your edit. Watch the log while making one connection:

Look for the first failure, not only the final client message. “No such file” points to the listener path or a missing socket. “Permission denied” points to mode, ownership, parent-directory permissions, or confinement. “SASL per-connection initialization failed” means Postfix could not initialize its SASL backend; it is not proof that a Gmail password is wrong.
Handle Postfix chroot visibility problems
Ubuntu’s Postfix service definitions can run an SMTP process in a chroot. A socket at /var/spool/postfix/private/auth is visible to a process whose filesystem root is the Postfix queue directory, but an incorrectly chosen path or service setting can hide it.
Inspect /etc/postfix/master.cf and find the smtp or submission service line. The chroot column is commonly shown as y or n. Ubuntu documentation recommends temporarily changing the relevant SMTP service’s chroot flag to n while troubleshooting, then restarting Postfix:
sudo editor /etc/postfix/master.cf
sudo systemctl restart postfix
Retest the socket and SMTP login. If the error disappears with chroot disabled, make the path and any required libraries or files available inside the chroot before deciding whether to keep that setting. Do not assume that changing chroot fixes permissions; it only changes what the process can see.

Distinguish a local socket failure from a Gmail network failure
Local-socket symptoms
- The log names
private/auth,smtpd_sasl_path, or Dovecot. - The error appears immediately when the SMTP client connects.
- The socket is missing, has the wrong owner or mode, or is outside the process’s visible filesystem.
- Changing Gmail credentials does not change the server-side error.
Outbound Gmail symptoms
- Postfix logs a timeout or connection refusal while contacting a Gmail host.
- DNS returns unusable addresses, or IPv6 routes fail while IPv4 works.
- An egress firewall blocks the selected destination port.
- The failure occurs before any SMTP banner or authentication response.
For a network-path problem, test name resolution and TCP reachability from the Ubuntu host. Check both address families if the host has IPv6:
getent ahosts smtp.gmail.com
nc -vz smtp.gmail.com 587
nc -vz smtp.gmail.com 465
A timeout here is not repaired by changing Unix-socket permissions. Investigate DNS, routing, firewall egress, and whether your provider blocks outbound SMTP, especially port 25. Gmail submission normally uses port 587 or 465 rather than port 25.
Configure Gmail’s submission modes correctly
| Gmail endpoint | Security mode | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
smtp.gmail.com:587 |
STARTTLS, negotiated with the STARTTLS command |
Submission clients and applications that begin unencrypted, then upgrade the connection |
smtp.gmail.com:465 |
Implicit SSL/TLS from the first byte | Clients configured for “SSL” or “TLS” mode rather than STARTTLS |
Use the full Gmail or Google Workspace account address as the username. A modern Google account may require OAuth rather than a basic password. Where Google permits password-based SMTP, an app password can be required, particularly when two-step verification is enabled. Workspace administrators can also restrict legacy authentication or require an approved OAuth flow.
Do not select port 465 with STARTTLS, or port 587 with an “SSL from connect” setting. Those are different TLS modes. Never turn off certificate verification or TLS merely to make an authentication error disappear.

Verify capabilities with EHLO
After the local socket is repaired, verify what the SMTP listener actually advertises. For a STARTTLS listener, connect with OpenSSL:
openssl s_client -starttls smtp -connect mail.example.com:587 -crlf
Replace mail.example.com and the port with your own submission listener. When the TLS session is established, issue:
Best Value
EHLO test.example
A correctly configured authenticated submission service should advertise STARTTLS before negotiation and an AUTH line afterward, commonly including LOGIN and PLAIN. If AUTH is absent, check smtpd_sasl_auth_enable, the listener’s service restrictions, and whether you connected to the intended port. If AUTH appears but a mechanism you need is missing, review Dovecot’s auth_mechanisms setting.
Do not paste real credentials into a shared terminal or an unencrypted session. Manual base64 AUTH tests can expose secrets in shell history and logs; use a mail client or a controlled test tool with secure handling instead.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Send one controlled authenticated message
Once EHLO shows the expected capabilities, configure one test account with the correct TLS mode and credential method. Send a message to an address you control, then inspect both the client result and the server log. The useful outcomes are:
- Authentication succeeds and the message is queued, showing that the local socket and SASL exchange work.
- Authentication succeeds but delivery is rejected, indicating recipient, relay, policy, or quota handling rather than socket access.
- Authentication fails with a Gmail status code, indicating TLS mode, credentials, OAuth/app-password use, or Workspace policy.
- The server still reports a socket error, so return to the listener, permissions, and chroot checks.
After diagnosis, remove temporary verbose or authentication-debug settings. They can create very large logs and may record sensitive protocol details.
Decode common Gmail responses
| Response | Meaning | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
530 5.7.0 Authentication required |
The client issued a command that requires authentication before logging in. | Authenticate before sending mail, and confirm that the client is using the submission service. |
530 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first |
The server requires TLS before accepting AUTH. | Use STARTTLS on port 587, or implicit SSL/TLS on port 465. |
535 5.7.80 Username and Password not accepted |
Credentials or the account’s authentication policy failed. | Use the full address, verify the password, and switch to OAuth or an allowed app password when required. |
534 5.7.90 Application-specific password required |
Google requires an app password for this password-based connection. | Create and use an app password only when the account policy permits it; otherwise configure OAuth. |
504 5.7.40 XOAUTH is no longer supported |
The client is attempting an obsolete XOAUTH method. | Update the client or library to a supported OAuth mechanism. |
These responses occur after a network connection has been made. They do not indicate that /var/spool/postfix/private/auth has the wrong mode.
Check service limits separately from socket health
Google Workspace guidance lists service limits such as 2,000 messages per day and 10,000 recipients per user per day for SMTP relay. Those are account or service quotas, not measurements of socket performance and not evidence that a Unix-domain listener is broken. A quota rejection requires account or administrative action after local authentication is known to work.
Use a repair decision tree
- Read the exact log line. If it names
private/author SASL initialization, stay on the Ubuntu host. If it reports a Gmail timeout, test DNS and TCP. If Gmail returns 530/534/535/504, correct TLS or account authentication. - For a local error, inspect the socket. Confirm Dovecot defines the listener at
/var/spool/postfix/private/auth, restart Dovecot, and verify mode0660, ownerpostfix, and grouppostfix. - Confirm Postfix’s path. Set
smtpd_sasl_type = dovecot,smtpd_sasl_path = private/auth, andsmtpd_sasl_auth_enable = yes. - Check mechanisms and visibility. Set
auth_mechanisms = plain loginwhen LOGIN is required, inspectmaster.cfchroot behavior, and temporarily disable chroot only as a diagnostic. - Reload and observe. Run
postfix check,doveconf -n, restart or reload services, and watch the mail log during one connection. - Verify protocol behavior. Use EHLO over the correct TLS mode and confirm the expected AUTH mechanisms are advertised.
- Perform one controlled send. Record whether the message is authenticated, queued, rejected by policy, or refused by Gmail, then remove debug verbosity.
Security checks before declaring success
- Keep TLS mandatory before PLAIN or LOGIN authentication.
- Keep
reject_unauth_destinationor its equivalent relay restriction enabled. - Use least-privilege socket ownership and mode; do not make the socket world-readable or world-writable.
- Prefer OAuth or an app password compatible with the account policy over a primary account password.
- Do not leave authentication debugging enabled after the test.
- Review logs for leaked credentials or tokens if verbose diagnostics were used, and rotate credentials when exposure is possible.
What a working configuration looks like
Dovecot creates /var/spool/postfix/private/auth at startup. The socket is owned by postfix:postfix with mode 0660. Postfix references it as private/auth, advertises AUTH only on the intended submission service, and enforces TLS and relay restrictions. An EHLO after TLS shows the mechanisms selected in Dovecot, and one controlled message authenticates and reaches the queue without a socket error.
