Save data belongs to that user in the console’s internal storage, not to the game card.
For a missing or rolled-back save, open System Settings → Data Management → Save Data Cloud, choose the affected user, and compare the cloud and console timestamps before selecting either Back Up Save Data or Download Save Data. Each option overwrites the other copy, and Nintendo warns that overwritten save data cannot be recovered.

Identify the exact Switch 2 release before troubleshooting
This guide covers the Nintendo Switch 2 edition of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, an Aspyr-developed and published release dated September 30, 2026. Troubleshooting steps for another platform, a different Nintendo account, or a different game can lead you to the wrong menus and conclusions.

Keep the game card or digital installation available while checking the console. Save data is stored in the Switch 2’s internal storage for each Nintendo user; it is not stored on the game card. Moving the card, reinstalling the software, or inserting the card into another console therefore does not carry the save with it.

Use this order for crashes, startup failures, and odd behavior
Perform the checks in order. The sequence follows Nintendo’s Switch 2 guidance and avoids deleting a save before you know which copy is healthy.
- Restart the Switch 2. Hold the console’s power button, choose the power-menu restart option, and wait for the Home menu to return before launching the game again.
- Install the latest console update. Open System Settings → System → System Update and let the console complete any available update. Keep the console connected to power during the installation.
- Update Shadow of Mordor. Highlight the game on the Home menu, press the + button, choose Software Update, then select Via the Internet. If the title is on a game card, leave the card inserted while the update check runs.
- Check for corrupted data. Open System Settings → Data Management → Manage Software, select Shadow of Mordor, and choose Check for Corrupted Data. Follow the on-screen repair or redownload instruction if the console reports a problem.
- Launch under the save’s original user. On the Home menu, start the game with the Nintendo user profile that created the save. A different user has a separate save area and can look like a blank or reset game.
Test the title after each completed step. If one action restores normal operation, stop there; do not delete software or overwrite cloud data unnecessarily.
When the game will not start or crashes during play
Distinguish a launch failure from a damaged installation
A title that fails immediately, returns to the Home menu, or displays an error after an interrupted download may have corrupted software data. The corrupted-data check in the sequence above can identify that condition. If the console offers a redownload, use a stable internet connection and do not remove the game card until the check or update has finished.
Do not erase save data as a first response
Deleting the software is different from deleting save data, but a hurried reset can still remove the only usable copy if you choose the wrong menu. Check the user profile and cloud status first. Nintendo’s documented cloud process cannot recover a save that you have overwritten.

Check for system and title updates again after a failed attempt
Some update processes require a restart before the new version is actually running. After the console and game report that they are current, restart once more and launch from the correct user profile.
Odd graphics, performance, or gameplay behavior
Players may report image-quality differences, performance changes, or unusual feature behavior in community discussions. Those reports are observations, not proof that every Switch 2 copy has the same fault. There is currently no authoritative, Shadow of Mordor-specific Switch 2 defect list or patch note establishing a universal crash pattern, a guaranteed visual-setting fix, or a confirmed change to the Nemesis system.
Use the general sequence—restart, update, corrupted-data check, and correct user—before treating an isolated symptom as a game bug. Record what happens in a reproducible form: the mission or menu, whether the issue occurs after resuming sleep, whether it appears with the game card or a digital install, and whether another user profile behaves differently. This information helps Nintendo or Aspyr support separate damaged local data from a software defect.

- A brief frame-rate dip or a visual artifact seen once.
- A Nemesis encounter that differs from another player’s report.
- An image-quality complaint without a repeatable trigger.
- A crash that disappears after restarting or updating.
Do not rely on an unofficial setting change as a guaranteed fix when no matching Nintendo or Aspyr notice exists.

Why a save appears missing or reset
The wrong Nintendo user is active
Switch 2 save data is separated by user. Starting Shadow of Mordor under a second profile creates a separate save context, so the original progress can appear to have vanished. Close the game, return to the Home menu, and select the profile that originally played it.
You are using another console
A game card does not carry the save. On a second Switch 2, the original progress will not appear automatically. A transfer or an eligible Save Data Cloud backup is required, and both methods depend on using the same Nintendo user.
The local save was replaced by an older copy
If the game opens at an earlier point, compare the local and cloud timestamps before playing further. Continuing to play can create newer local progress, while downloading an older cloud copy can replace it. Decide which timeline you need before selecting an overwrite command.

Nintendo’s Save Data Cloud screen shows the latest cloud-backup timestamp and the latest save on the console. Use it to make a deliberate choice rather than guessing which copy is newer.

- Connect the Switch 2 to the internet and sign in with the Nintendo user that owns the save.
- Open System Settings → Data Management → Save Data Cloud.
- Select the intended user.
- Select Shadow of Mordor if it appears in that user’s title list.
- Read both timestamps shown for the cloud backup and the console save.
- If the console copy contains the progress you want to preserve, choose Back Up Save Data.
- If the cloud copy is newer or is the version you intentionally want to restore, choose Download Save Data.
- Wait for the operation to finish before launching the game, then start it with the same user profile.
Both commands are destructive to the copy they overwrite. Nintendo’s warning is explicit: “When using either of the following two options (Back Up Save Data or Download Save Data), keep in mind that any overwritten save data cannot be recovered.”
Choose between the local and cloud copies

If the timestamps are equal, neither copy is demonstrably newer. Choose based on which state you recognize as correct, and remember that the selected overwrite cannot be undone through Nintendo’s documented process.

Membership, internet, and title support
Save Data Cloud requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and an internet connection. Cloud backup is not available for every piece of software, so verify that Shadow of Mordor appears in the selected user’s Save Data Cloud list before relying on recovery.

“An error has occurred” or automatic backup is unavailable
Nintendo’s documented sequence is to install the latest system update, then return to the Save Data Cloud title list and inspect the affected game. Confirm that you selected the correct user and that the console is online. If the title still does not appear, the menu is not confirming an available backup; do not infer that a missing entry can be restored by downloading the game again.

Cloud backup is not a version-history system
The menu exposes the latest cloud backup and the current console save, not an unlimited archive of earlier checkpoints. Once one copy is overwritten, Nintendo’s stated recovery process cannot bring that overwritten data back.
Prevent another apparent save loss
- Always launch the game with the profile that owns the progress.
- Before changing consoles, check whether the title appears under that user’s Save Data Cloud list.
- When you finish a valuable session, allow the game and console to complete their normal save and backup activity before powering off or removing the card.
- Before downloading a cloud save, read both timestamps and decide which progress you are sacrificing.
- Keep the console updated so Nintendo’s current save-management and software fixes are installed.
These practices reduce profile mix-ups and accidental overwrites, but they cannot create a cloud backup when the title or account is not eligible.
When to contact Nintendo or Aspyr support
Escalate after completing the update, restart, corrupted-data, and user-profile checks if the same failure remains reproducible. Provide the console model, whether the game is physical or digital, the active user, the exact on-screen error, the point at which the crash occurs, and whether the issue survives a restart. Include the date and result of the last system and software updates.
Describe community-observed behavior as a report rather than a confirmed defect. At present, authoritative material supports console-level troubleshooting and save recovery, but does not establish a universal Shadow of Mordor Switch 2 bug, a guaranteed gameplay workaround, or an Aspyr patch that resolves every reported symptom.
