If your new iPhone 18 Pro will not activate, cannot find your old iPhone, or will not transfer an eSIM, first check your internet connection and Apple’s activation status, then follow the recovery steps for the specific failure. Apple’s published instructions cover iPhone setup generally; they do not establish the SIM hardware or carrier compatibility of every iPhone 18 Pro variant or region.
Before you start: prepare the old phone, network and account
Have a reliable Wi-Fi connection, your Apple Account credentials and, if you are moving from another phone, that phone or a recent backup. Apple says an iPhone can also be set up by connecting it to a computer. Before migrating, check the old iPhone for an available iOS update and make an iCloud backup if possible. Keep the old phone intact until you have confirmed that the new phone has the data and cellular service you need.

Make the old iPhone discoverable
Connect the current iPhone or iPad to Wi-Fi, turn on Bluetooth, then turn on the new iPhone and place it nearby. If the setup prompt disappears from the old device, Apple’s advice is direct: “If the prompt to set up your new device disappears from your current device, restart both devices.” This instruction appears in Apple Support’s Use Quick Start to transfer data to a new iPhone or iPad document, published July 20, 2026.

Give a direct transfer time to finish
Keep both devices close together and connected to power until the direct transfer completes. The time depends on how much data is being moved and network conditions. If you chose to download from iCloud instead, apps and data can continue downloading in the background.
Quick Start cannot transfer from a current device when the new iPhone is enrolled in Apple School Manager or Apple Business. If the new device is managed by an organization, ask its administrator which setup route is available.
Choose the right route from Android
For an Android-to-iPhone move, Apple directs users to Move to iOS during initial setup. If you already finished setting up the iPhone, Apple says you must erase it and start setup again to use Move to iOS, or move content manually instead. Do not erase the new phone unless you are comfortable repeating setup and understand what will be removed.
If your eSIM will not transfer or activate
Choose a carrier-supported activation method
Apple lists several eSIM routes: eSIM Quick Transfer from a nearby iPhone, carrier activation, a QR code, a carrier link or app, manual details, or carrier-assisted transfer from a non-Apple device. Which options work depends on the carrier and plan; they are not universally available.

For Apple’s listed eSIM Quick Transfer prerequisites, both iPhones must be signed in to the same Apple Account, the old iPhone must be unlocked, the devices must be near each other with Bluetooth on, and both must run iOS 18.4 or later. A carrier must also support Quick Transfer. Cellular activation can be done during setup or afterward, so if you skipped it, open Settings and add or transfer the plan. Depending on region and iOS version, the menu may be called Cellular, Mobile Service or Mobile Data. See Apple’s eSIM setup instructions.
Work through Apple’s basic eSIM checks

Confirm the iPhone has Wi-Fi or a personal hotspot connection, the cellular plan is active, and the carrier supports eSIM on your plan. Install the latest iOS version available to the phone.

Turn Airplane Mode on and then off. In Settings, inspect the cellular line; if it appears, switch it off and back on.

Restart the iPhone. Then open Settings > General > About and check whether a carrier-settings update is offered.

If the line still will not activate, contact the carrier. Have the exact error message, phone number, carrier account credentials or PIN, and the iPhone’s IMEI or EID ready.
These steps follow Apple’s eSIM troubleshooting guidance. Do not repeatedly delete or replace an eSIM as an initial fix; Apple’s cited sequence does not recommend that. The carrier may need to issue a QR code or complete activation on its side. If you see a physical-SIM or eSIM compatibility alert, ask the carrier to confirm plan and device eligibility rather than assuming an iPhone setting will resolve it.

Check Apple’s activation service and retry
Check Apple’s System Status page for iOS Device Activation. If its indicator is not green, wait and try again later. Restart the iPhone and use a reliable Wi-Fi connection rather than mobile data. If the activation server is temporarily unavailable or cannot be reached, wait a few minutes before retrying.

Try activation with a computer
If retrying over Wi-Fi does not work, connect the iPhone to a computer with an internet connection, current macOS or current iTunes, and a cable compatible with both devices. Follow the on-screen activation prompts. Apple says that if you see “Set up as New” or “Restore from Backup,” the iPhone is activated.

Know when the issue is the carrier or Apple Account
An “invalid SIM” or “SIM not supported” alert is a carrier question: contact the carrier to check whether the SIM or eSIM and plan are eligible. If activation asks for an Apple Account password, Activation Lock may be enabled; the account associated with Find My may be required. Apple’s activation troubleshooting page covers these cases and the computer fallback.
What to give the carrier or Apple Support
When basic recovery does not resolve the problem, note the exact error and the step where it appears. For cellular activation, contact the carrier with your phone number, account credentials or PIN, and IMEI or EID. Ask the carrier to confirm whether it supports the activation method you are trying and whether the plan is active. For an Apple activation-service error, check System Status and describe the network and computer steps you have already tried when contacting Apple Support.
Apple’s cited setup material is general iPhone guidance, not a confirmation of iPhone 18 Pro SIM configuration or carrier support in every country. For model-specific SIM questions, verify the exact regional model and ask the carrier; do not infer a SIM tray or compatibility from another region’s instructions.
