To fix a missing or awkward 3DS screen, check the emulator’s screen-layout setting; to fix taps that do not register, check whether your mouse or touchscreen input is enabled and aimed at the emulated bottom screen. These are separate settings. The exact menus depend on whether you use standalone Azahar, an older Citra build, or Azahar’s Libretro core in RetroArch.
First, identify your emulator and frontend
Before following a menu path, identify the application and build you are running. Azahar is the active project referenced here, while Citra’s troubleshooting FAQ is archived and dated March 4, 2024. The detailed layout and input options below are documented for the Azahar Libretro core; they should not be assumed to match standalone Azahar or every RetroArch version.

In the documented Azahar Libretro core, open its Layout options and choose a mode that suits how you want to view the two displays:

For Large Screen/Small Screen or a single-screen layout, check the Prominent Screen option if the wrong display is emphasized. Adjust Large Screen Proportion to change the relative size of the displays in the large/small arrangement. These are layout choices, not evidence that a game or controller is faulty.
If a screen seems to have disappeared
- Check whether Single Screen Only is selected.
- If using a large/small or single-screen mode, check which display is set as Prominent Screen.
- Switch to Default Top-Bottom or Side by Side to confirm both displays can be shown together.
- If the arrangement is still awkward, review the frontend’s orientation and window sizing. The documented core options do not establish one universal fix for every operating system or standalone app.
Fix taps that do not register
The Libretro core documents separate Mouse Touchscreen and Touch Support options. Enable the one that matches the input your host device and frontend actually provide: test a mouse on a computer, or touch input on a touchscreen device. Aim within the displayed bottom screen, which is the 3DS touch display.

- Open the Azahar core’s input options in your Libretro frontend.
- Enable Mouse Touchscreen for mouse input, or Touch Support for touchscreen-device input.
- Move or tap within the emulated bottom-screen area and test an in-game control that responds to touch.
- If the bottom screen has moved or been resized, check the frontend’s screen arrangement, scaling, and pointer mapping; the pointer may no longer land where you expect.
- If input still does not register, disable and re-enable the relevant option. Restart the core if your frontend requires a reload for changed options to take effect. This is a basic troubleshooting step, not a documented guaranteed fix.
When a controller will—and will not—help
A controller can provide ordinary game-button input, and Azahar describes modern-controller support as an emulator improvement. But a controller is not a required fix for a hidden display or broken touch mapping: those issues call for layout and input-setting checks. Tell configuration problems apart from game-specific faults
If both screens appear correctly but one game alone freezes or crashes, further layout changes are unlikely to address the underlying issue. The archived Citra FAQ notes that compatibility varies by game and recommends gathering a log that includes hardware, configuration, emulator version, and GPU-driver context. That is legacy Citra guidance, not a current Azahar diagnosis. For help, use documentation or a troubleshooting channel for your exact build and include those details where requested.

Keep physical 3DS touchscreen advice separate
A physical console with an unresponsive touchscreen has a hardware problem, unlike emulated touch, which depends on the host input device and emulator configuration. Nintendo’s 3DS operations manual discusses checking a fitted protective sheet and looking for dirt or trapped air. Those physical-screen checks do not fix mouse or touch mapping in an emulator.
