Choose a PC by matching its CPU, graphics card and video memory, system RAM, and SSD to the recommended requirements for the exact simulators you plan to play. In the three examples below, 32 GB of RAM and a graphics card with at least 8 GB of VRAM recur in recommended tiers—but neither figure guarantees a particular frame rate or suits every game, resolution, or VR setup.
Start with the games and how you plan to play
Write down the titles you expect to run, your monitor resolution, and whether you intend to use VR. A PC that meets one simulator’s recommended requirements may not meet another’s, and a desktop target is not automatically a suitable VR target. Check each publisher’s current requirements before buying; treat minimum specs as an entry point, not a promise of the settings or experience you want.

For Microsoft Flight Simulator, Microsoft says minimum-tier systems may need lower graphics settings. Its support guidance also notes that higher graphical settings put more strain on the system. Microsoft’s requirements and tier descriptions and Microsoft’s performance guidance should be read as publisher guidance, not a benchmark guarantee.
Compare the published requirements for your games
These official figures illustrate why it is better to compare complete configurations than shop by a single component. They use different tiers and labels, and they are not directly comparable performance tests.

Microsoft’s ideal Flight Simulator 2024 tier is higher than its recommended tier: Ryzen 9 7900X or Core i7-14700K, Radeon RX 7900 XT or GeForce RTX 4080, 12 GB VRAM, and 64 GB RAM. The FAQ lists 50 GB storage and Windows 10 with the latest update and DirectX 12 for its tiers. Use these as Microsoft’s published targets, not as proof of a specific frame rate.
Requirements can change. Roberts Space Industries says Star Citizen is still in development and its minimum and recommended specs may change. It also cautions that performance, frame rates, and stability can vary with in-game location, server population, background applications, and network conditions. Recheck the current requirement page when you are ready to buy.

Choose the CPU and graphics card as a pair
Compare the CPU and GPU against the recommended tier for every game on your list. Do not rely on a GPU model name alone: check the specific card’s VRAM and whether it meets the title’s stated graphics requirement. Resolution, graphics settings, and VR plans affect how demanding the target setup is, but the published requirement tables do not establish a universal card or performance level for those scenarios.
For Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, the difference between the recommended and ideal tiers is a useful reminder that a game may publish more than one target. The recommended tier lists 8 GB VRAM, while the ideal tier lists 12 GB. Match your purchase to the tier and setup you actually want rather than assuming that one figure fits all users.

Plan RAM and SSD capacity across the whole library
RAM
All three examples list 32 GB in their recommended tiers. That makes 32 GB a practical comparison point for these games, not a universal requirement or performance guarantee. Microsoft lists 64 GB in Flight Simulator 2024’s ideal tier.
Storage
Storage figures differ substantially: Star Citizen specifies a 150+ GB SSD, DCS lists 500 GB available at its recommended tier, and Flight Simulator 2024 lists 50 GB. Size the SSD for the largest title you expect to install, plus other games and add-ons; do not choose capacity based only on the smallest figure. Confirm current publisher guidance, since installation requirements can change.

Check the complete PC, not just its headline specs
Once a system meets the game requirements, compare the practical details that affect ownership. These are purchasing considerations, not additional game requirements.
- Upgradeability: Check whether memory, storage, and graphics can be upgraded and whether the case has room for the parts you may want later.
- Cooling and power: Confirm that the system’s cooling and power supply are appropriate for its installed components.
- Noise and size: Consider fan noise, desk space, and whether the case will fit where you plan to use it.
- Warranty and total price: Compare warranty terms and the cost of the complete setup, including any controls or headset you intend to add.
The requirements cited here are for Windows PCs. The Star Citizen recommended tier lists Windows 10 or 11; Microsoft’s Flight Simulator 2024 FAQ specifies Windows 10 with the latest update and DirectX 12 in its tiers; DCS lists Windows 10/11. Verify operating-system compatibility for each title at purchase time.

Add flight controls separately
A joystick, HOTAS, yoke, throttle quadrant, rudder pedals, head tracking, or VR headset can shape the way you play, but these are peripheral choices—not substitutes for meeting the PC’s requirements. Microsoft lists gamepad or joystick control and identifies HOTAS, stick or yoke, throttle quadrant, rudder pedals, head tracking, and VR as enhanced or premium options. DCS’s recommended listing also names joystick, pedals, VR, and TrackIR among input options. Check the compatibility and requirements of the specific game and accessory before buying.
