Most Destiny 2 disconnects are caused by a temporary Bungie or platform outage, an unstable home connection, packet loss, or router/NAT behavior—not by the game installation itself. Check service-status notices first, then work through reversible fixes in this order: restart the game, clear the relevant cache, power-cycle your modem and router, stop competing traffic, and test with Ethernet. Use the displayed error code to decide whether the problem is a general internet failure, a peer-to-peer/NAT issue, blocked router communication, or matchmaking connectivity.
Start with the least disruptive checks
Do not change firewall rules or forward ports as your first response. A service outage can look exactly like a failed home network, and unnecessary router changes can create new problems for other devices.

- Check Bungie and your platform’s service-status notices. Bungie says the most common reason for a server error is that Destiny is offline. Look for an outage, maintenance window, backend test, or platform interruption before troubleshooting your router.
- Close Destiny 2 completely and relaunch it. A one-off disconnect may clear when the game creates a fresh session.
- Clear the appropriate cache. On a console, use the platform’s documented cache-clearing procedure. On a PC, clear the cache for the launcher that starts Destiny 2. The exact menu names differ by platform, so follow the current instructions for your device rather than deleting unrelated game files.
- Power-cycle the network. Shut down the console or PC, unplug the modem and router, wait for them to finish powering off, reconnect the modem first, wait for its internet connection, then reconnect the router. Start Destiny only after the network is stable.
- Pause competing traffic. Stop video streaming, cloud backups, large downloads, file sharing, and game updates on every device that uses the connection.
- Test a wired connection. Connect the console or PC directly to the primary router with an Ethernet cable. A Cat6 cable is a practical diagnostic purchase and can become a permanent connection if it solves the problem.
- Record the pattern. Note the exact code, time, activity, whether other household devices were busy, and whether the failure happened on Wi-Fi or Ethernet. A repeatable pattern is more useful to Bungie or your ISP than a list of unrelated codes.
If the error disappears after the wired test, improve the wireless environment before making advanced router changes. If it persists on Ethernet while service-status pages show no outage, continue with the code-specific guidance below.
What each Destiny 2 error code usually indicates

Understanding the most common codes
WEASEL: a broad networking symptom
WEASEL is an all-encompassing message that usually indicates a general networking issue. It does not identify one failed component. Start with a complete relaunch and a power-cycle, then compare Wi-Fi and Ethernet. If the game will not relaunch after the code, restart the console or PC before trying again.

Cross Save does not itself cause WEASEL. However, simultaneous logins on multiple platforms can disrupt a session, so sign out of unused platform sessions while testing. If WEASEL appears alongside other codes or only during busy household periods, suspect instability rather than a damaged installation.
CENTIPEDE: the path to Bungie servers failed
CENTIPEDE means the connection to Bungie servers was lost. Strict or Type 3 NAT, ISP restrictions, packet loss, and temporary geographic internet conditions can all contribute. A service-status check separates a Bungie-side event from a local fault; a direct Ethernet test then separates wireless instability from the rest of the path.
Do not infer that your internet is healthy merely because a web page loads. Destiny maintains a constant session and reacts to brief loss, jitter, or blocked traffic that ordinary browsing may hide.

These codes commonly appear when Destiny cannot connect to another player’s console. The relevant failure may be packet loss, unstable Wi-Fi, strict NAT, router filtering, or several consoles competing behind one router. First stabilize the physical connection and remove competing traffic. If two or more consoles are used in the household, document which device receives the code and whether the other console is online at the same time.
UPnP can help a router negotiate the connections Destiny needs, but enabling it changes how devices request inbound mappings. Make the change only after basic testing, use the router’s current documentation, and retest one setting at a time so you can reverse it if another application breaks.

CABBAGE: router communication is blocked
Bungie describes CABBAGE as a condition in which router settings block communications to or from Destiny services. The cleanest diagnostic is a console or PC connected directly to the primary router, without a wireless extender, secondary router, or unusual gateway in between. If that removes the code, the intermediate device or its rules deserve attention.
For affected Technicolor or Thomson equipment, Bungie’s guidance discusses UPnP and firewall adjustments. Router interfaces differ by firmware, so use the manufacturer’s instructions and record every original value before changing anything. Avoid disabling the entire firewall as a permanent solution.

CHICKEN: general connection trouble
CHICKEN is not a precise component diagnosis. Apply the basic sequence, then investigate whether your ISP is experiencing congestion, an outage, traffic restrictions, or packet loss. If the code appears only on Wi-Fi, focus on signal quality and competing devices; if it appears on Ethernet as well, the fault is more likely upstream of the wireless network.
ACCORDION and CATTLE: matchmaking-server failures
ACCORDION concerns connecting to or maintaining a connection with matchmaking servers. CATTLE also points to matchmaking connectivity and may involve firewall or peer-to-peer blocking, NAT, or transient packet loss. Repeated cases after a clean Ethernet test are the point at which to review NAT and port-forwarding guidance, not before.
Port forwarding creates fixed inbound rules and can conflict with automatic mappings or another console. Follow the router manufacturer’s procedure and Bungie’s current platform guidance, forward only the ports specified for your platform, and remove stale rules when hardware or internet service changes.

LYCHEE: retry before reinstalling
LYCHEE can be transient or related to backend testing. Retry and relaunch first, then check Bungie announcements. A reinstall is a last resort because it cannot correct a server-side test, ISP packet loss, or a blocked router path. Use it only after the network steps have produced no improvement and the service is operating normally.

Different games use different server regions, matchmaking systems, connection protocols, and tolerance for packet loss. Destiny is an online shared-world shooter that requires a constant and stable internet connection. A connection that is adequate for turn-based play, a single-player mode, or ordinary web use may still drop Destiny’s session.
- Protocol differences: Destiny’s matchmaking and peer-to-peer interactions may require traffic that another title does not.
- Short interruptions: Wi-Fi interference or an overloaded upstream link can cause a momentary loss that Destiny reports immediately.
- Region and route: A temporary problem between your ISP and Bungie’s network can affect one service while other games remain reachable.
- NAT behavior: A strict NAT may permit some outbound connections while preventing the peer-to-peer paths Destiny needs.
- Household timing: Video streams, cloud synchronization, updates, or another console can consume capacity exactly when matchmaking starts.
Use a wired test and the timestamped error pattern to distinguish these cases. “Other games work” is useful context, but it is not proof that the entire path to Destiny is healthy.
Wi-Fi versus Ethernet: the fastest diagnostic
Bungie strongly recommends a wired internet connection for the best Destiny experience because Wi-Fi can add latency, interference, congestion, packet loss, and instability. Ethernet is valuable even if you plan to return to Wi-Fi: it tells you whether the radio environment is the main cause.
- Connect the console or PC directly to the primary router with an Ethernet cable, preferably Cat6.
- Disable Wi-Fi on that device so it cannot silently switch paths.
- Play or remain in matchmaking long enough to reproduce the usual failure window.
- Compare the exact code and timing with your normal wireless sessions.
If Ethernet is stable, move the access point closer, reduce walls and competing transmitters, choose a less congested wireless channel where your router allows it, and keep high-volume devices off the network during play. If Ethernet fails in the same way, do not spend money on more wireless hardware; investigate the router, ISP, or service path instead.

Bandwidth, packet loss, and household traffic
Bungie’s current Network Setup guidance lists up to 1 Mbps of download and upload bandwidth for Destiny and up to 1 GB of live-gameplay data per hour. These are planning figures, not a promise that every session uses the maximum. Stability matters as much as the headline speed.
Streaming video, file sharing, operating-system updates, and cloud backups can consume capacity or fill the upload queue. That creates delay and packet loss even when a speed test reports a high download rate. Pause those activities, then test Destiny again. If the problem follows a particular time of day, ask the ISP whether the area is congested and whether they can see loss or retransmissions on the line.
A wired session that still shows intermittent loss should be tested at different times. Record timestamps, the code, and whether other services were affected. Some geographic events resolve without any home-network change; Bungie documented an investigation involving 25% packet loss from the UK, with the year not stated on the support page.

Advanced settings belong after service-status checks, cache clearing, power-cycling, and an Ethernet comparison. Change one setting at a time and keep a written record so you can undo it.

Strict or Type 3 NAT can limit peer-to-peer and matchmaking paths. First confirm that the console or PC is connected to the primary router, not a second router operating behind it. Two routers performing network address translation can create a double-NAT condition that is harder to troubleshoot.

Use UPnP cautiously
UPnP allows compatible devices to request temporary port mappings. It may resolve BEAVER-family, CABBAGE, or matchmaking failures, but it also changes router behavior for every device that can request a mapping. Enable it only if you understand the router’s control and security implications, then retest and disable it if it does not help.
Review firewall rules
A firewall should remain enabled. Look for rules that block the console or PC, the launcher, or Destiny’s required traffic. Do not copy random port lists from forums; use current Bungie and platform instructions for your edition and network.
Consider port forwarding last
Port forwarding can create a predictable path when automatic negotiation fails, but it is device-specific and easy to misconfigure. It may conflict with UPnP or another console using the same ports. Apply only the documented platform rules, reserve the device’s local address if the router requires it, and remove obsolete entries after replacing the router.
When to contact the ISP, platform provider, or Bungie
Contact the ISP when the evidence is upstream
- Ethernet and Wi-Fi fail alike while Bungie and platform services are operating.
- You see packet loss, severe latency, or an outage across multiple services.
- The failure follows a time-of-day pattern consistent with local congestion.
- The connection is behind a university, corporate, mobile, or community network with traffic policies you cannot change.
Give the ISP timestamps, affected services, wired-test results, and any evidence of packet loss. Ask whether there is an outage, congestion, traffic restriction, or line fault rather than asking only for a speed test.
Contact the platform provider when the device or service is affected broadly
If the console or launcher cannot sign in to multiple games or services, check the platform’s account and service status and use its support channel. A platform outage can produce Destiny errors even when Bungie’s servers are healthy.
Contact Bungie Help when the failure is Destiny-specific
After documenting the code, time, region, platform, NAT type, wired or wireless result, and steps already tried, report persistent Destiny-only failures through Bungie’s support channels. That information helps separate a known incident from a local configuration problem.
