If DEATH STRANDING crashes, stutters or refuses to recognize a controller, use this order: confirm that your edition’s requirements are met, update Windows, BIOS, drivers and Microsoft Visual C++, return overclocked hardware to stock, then isolate overlays and security or performance utilities. For stutter that appears when using a controller—especially during cutscenes—disable vibration and apply the game’s Steam Input workaround. These steps come from 505 Games and the official PC requirements, so they are targeted fixes rather than a guarantee for every system.
Start with the symptom you actually have. A game that never detects a controller needs a different check from one that detects an Xbox controller but drops frames, and an Epic Games access-violation error has a platform-specific launch workaround.

First, identify your edition, platform and symptom
DEATH STRANDING and DEATH STRANDING DIRECTOR’S CUT have slightly different published requirement wording. Check the title shown in your library before changing settings. Also note whether you use Steam or Epic Games: the direct-executable workaround is documented specifically for Epic errors.
- Crash or access violation: the game closes, displays an error such as
0x887a00005, or showsDx12-ErrorCode : 0x8007000e. - Black screen: the game launches but the display goes black, often after an overlay or a transition.
- Stutter or cutscene hitch: frame delivery is uneven even when average performance appears adequate.
- Controller not detected: the game accepts keyboard and mouse input but no gamepad input.
- Controller-related lag: input works, but vibration or a particular Steam Input path coincides with frame drops.
- No sound: the game runs but the intended playback device is silent.
Keep the symptom in mind during every test. Change one category at a time and retest the same save, menu, or cutscene; changing several variables together makes it impossible to know which one helped.

Check the published PC requirements before troubleshooting
A system below the relevant minimum can produce crashes, missing features or unstable performance that software tweaks cannot reliably cure. The original PC FAQ and the Steam listing for DIRECTOR’S CUT differ in one important detail: the listed GeForce GTX 1050 memory. Compare your complete configuration with the edition you own rather than assuming the two tables are interchangeable.
| Requirement | Original PC release (official FAQ) | DIRECTOR’S CUT (Steam listing) |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 | 64-bit Windows 10 |
| Processor minimum | Intel Core i5-3470 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200 | Intel Core i5-3470 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200 |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 8 GB RAM |
| Graphics minimum | GeForce GTX 1050 3 GB or Radeon RX 560 4 GB | GeForce GTX 1050 4 GB or Radeon RX 560 4 GB |
| Graphics API | DirectX 12 | DirectX 12 |
| Storage | 80 GB | 80 GB |
| Other requirement | AVX support is identified in the crash guidance; DirectX-compatible audio is listed in the FAQ | AVX instruction-set support |
The official FAQ gives a recommended 1080p/60 FPS class of Intel Core i7-3770 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600, 8 GB RAM, and a GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB or Radeon RX 590. It also lists these performance targets:
| Target | Published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum tier | 30 FPS at 720p | A baseline target, not a promise for every scene or setting. |
| Recommended 1080p tier | 30 FPS at 1080p | The FAQ’s lower recommended target. |
| Recommended 1080p/60 tier | 60 FPS at 1080p | Associated with the faster CPU and GPU class above. |
Gameplay framerate is unlocked, while cinematic cutscenes are capped at 60 FPS according to the official FAQ. A cutscene therefore should not be judged by the same maximum frame rate as gameplay. If your hardware lacks AVX, does not have the required DirectX 12 capability, or is short of the stated memory or storage, fix that eligibility problem first.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsProtect your saves and establish a clean test
Before BIOS, driver or stability changes, make a manual copy of the save folder. The official FAQ identifies the location as %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalKojimaProductionsDeathStranding. Copy the folder to another drive or a clearly named backup directory while the game is closed. This is prudent protection before system-level troubleshooting, not a claim that the publisher requires a backup.
For a clean test, close browsers and other demanding applications, disconnect unnecessary USB devices, and restart Windows. Reproduce the problem using the same area of the game. If the issue disappears after a restart, note what was running before investigating more invasive changes.
Run the general crash checklist in this order
505 Games’ crash guidance prioritizes system components and stability. Complete each step, restart when requested, and test before moving to the next.

- Install pending Windows updates. Open Settings and go to Windows Update. Install available quality, cumulative and hardware updates, restart, and check again until Windows reports that it is up to date. The 505 Games article specifically referred to Windows 10 version 1909 or later; that was historical guidance from the article and should not be treated as a current promise about every supported Windows release.
- Update the motherboard BIOS. Use the motherboard manufacturer’s documented model and revision, read its recovery instructions, and do not interrupt power during the flash. If you are not certain of the exact board or recovery procedure, stop and obtain the manual before proceeding.
- Update device drivers. Install a current graphics driver and the latest chipset, audio and other motherboard drivers appropriate for your hardware. Use the manufacturer’s package for the exact model, restart, and test the game before adding optional tuning software.
- Repair or install the x64 Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. Use Microsoft’s current x64 package, choose the repair option when it is already installed, restart Windows, and launch the game again. A missing or damaged runtime can prevent a DirectX 12 title from starting even when the graphics driver itself is current.
- Return overclocked hardware to stock. In the BIOS, graphics-driver panel or tuning utility, load default clocks and voltages. This includes settings made with utilities such as MSI Afterburner, EVGA Precision X1 or Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. 505 Games reported that some users’ Access Violation (Worker #) crashes stopped after returning to stock; it is not a guaranteed fix, but it is an essential stability test.
- Reboot and retest without adding a new tweak. Record the exact error, the scene in which it occurs and whether the crash happens before the main menu, during loading or during play.
Do not overclock again until the game is stable at stock settings. If a crash returns immediately after restoring an overclock, the stability setting—not a random game file—is a strong suspect.

For Epic Games players who see Access Violation 0x887a00005 or Dx12-ErrorCode : 0x8007000e, 505 Games documents a platform-specific test:
- Open the installed DEATH STRANDING folder in File Explorer. Use the install location shown by Epic Games if you do not know it.
- Find the game’s main executable rather than starting it from the Epic Games launcher.
- Double-click the executable to launch it directly. If Windows blocks the launch or the error remains, right-click the file, choose Properties, open Compatibility, select Run this program as an administrator, apply the setting, and test again.
- If direct launching changes nothing, undo the administrator setting if it is not needed and continue with the Windows, BIOS, driver, Visual C++ and stock-clock steps above.
This workaround is documented for Epic’s errors; it is not a universal instruction for Steam installations. Do not download replacement executables or DLL files from unofficial sites.
Isolate overlays and security utilities behind black screens
Third-party antivirus, ransomware or malware-monitoring software, streaming applications, and system or performance tools can interfere with startup or rendering. Steam and Discord overlays are also specifically worth disabling when investigating black-screen crashes or other undesirable behavior.
Use a reversible, one-at-a-time test rather than permanently weakening security:
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Write down the current settings and create a restore point if your Windows configuration normally uses one.
- Disable the Steam overlay for the game, restart Steam, and test.
- Re-enable it if the symptom remains, then disable the Discord overlay and test again.
- Next, pause or exit streaming, hardware-monitoring and performance-tuning utilities, and retest.
- Finally, use your security product’s documented temporary game-mode or monitoring pause, disconnect from untrusted networks while protection is paused, test briefly, and immediately restore protection.
If one utility changes the result, add the game executable to that utility’s documented exception list instead of leaving protection disabled. If no single change helps, restore all settings and continue with driver and hardware checks. A black screen caused by an overlay and a black screen caused by an unstable overclock can look identical at first.

Address stuttering and cutscene hitching
When the game is responsive but frame delivery is uneven, check the controller path before lowering every graphics option. 505 Games says that certain controllers used through Steam—particularly Xbox One controllers—have been associated with framerate drops, especially in cutscenes. Its wording is specific: vibration functionality can cause the drops, and disabling vibration completely eliminated them in the affected scenario.
Apply the official Steam Input workaround
- Open Steam in Big Picture Mode and disable controller support.
- Exit Big Picture Mode, open your Steam Library, right-click DEATH STRANDING, and choose Properties.
- Open the controller settings for the game and set the per-game Steam Input option to Off or Default.
- Reconnect the controller, launch the game, and revisit the exact cutscene or area that previously stuttered.
505 Games says framerate and performance should return to normal in the reported cases after this change. Because this is a publisher-reported workaround rather than an independent test of every controller and driver combination, treat it as a strong step to try, not an unconditional guarantee.
Turn off vibration before replacing hardware
Disable vibration in the game’s controller settings or in the active controller profile, whichever layer currently controls it. Test a previously affected cutscene with vibration off. If the hitch disappears, leave vibration disabled while you decide whether the feature is worth the performance trade-off. Do not simultaneously change graphics quality, frame caps and input layers; you need to know whether vibration was the relevant variable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The official FAQ says gameplay framerate is unlocked but cinematic cutscenes are capped at 60 FPS. A cutscene that remains at or below 60 FPS is not automatically malfunctioning; the useful signal is a sudden drop or repeated hitch compared with the same scene after vibration and Steam Input changes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix a controller that is not detected
The official FAQ says DEATH STRANDING has full controller support and can also be played with keyboard and mouse. First determine whether Windows sees the gamepad, then determine which input layer is handling it.
- Reconnect the controller directly to the PC, avoiding an unpowered hub, and confirm that Windows responds to its buttons or sticks.
- In Steam, open Big Picture Mode and review controller support. For a detection problem, test the per-game Steam Input setting one value at a time—Default, then Off if necessary—restarting the game after each change.
- Close other remapping or virtual-controller utilities while testing. Two programs presenting different virtual devices can make a game appear to have no controller.
- Launch the game with the controller already connected. If it works only after reconnecting at the menu, note that timing and use it as a temporary workaround while checking drivers and USB power management.
- If the game still does not respond, use keyboard and mouse to confirm that the game itself is running, then restore the input setting that worked in other Steam games and contact support with the controller model and connection type.
Do not use the stutter workaround as a universal detection fix. Disabling controller support in Big Picture Mode and setting Steam Input to Off or Default is documented for the vibration-related performance problem; a non-detected controller may require testing the other available per-game mode.

Fix Xbox controller lag or vibration-related drops
For an Xbox One controller that responds but causes lag, start with vibration and the Steam Input procedure rather than buying a replacement. The symptom described by 505 Games is a framerate drop, particularly in cutscenes, linked to vibration—not a statement that every Xbox controller is incompatible.
- Disable vibration completely.
- Disable controller support in Big Picture Mode.
- Set the game’s per-game Steam Input value to Off or Default.
- Retest with the same controller, cable or wireless connection and the same scene.
If the lag remains, test a wired connection, close remapping utilities and update the controller and chipset drivers. Those are isolation steps, not a publisher guarantee. 505 Games says it has not experienced the cited vibration behavior with PS4 controllers. A PS4-compatible controller, particularly a wired model, is therefore a reasonable alternative for someone who needs vibration and cannot resolve the issue, but it is an option rather than proof that new hardware will fix every stutter.
What to do when there is no sound
When the game has no audio, verify the Windows playback device instead of changing graphics settings:
- Open the Windows Sound Control Panel.
- Select the playback device you intend to use.
- Choose Configure.
- Check that the audio channels match the device’s actual configuration, then apply the setting and retest the game.
Also confirm that Windows has not routed the game to a disconnected monitor, headset or virtual audio device. If audio works in other applications but not in the game after the channel check, include the selected device, channel configuration and driver version in your support request.
When the problem still happens
Stop changing settings randomly once you have completed the relevant branch. Preserve the useful evidence:
