Why is my Fire TV buffering or unable to connect?
First check which part of the connection is failing rather than assuming the Fire TV itself is at fault. From a connection error screen, select Network Diagnostics. Alternatively, open Settings → Network and press Play/Pause to open Network Status. Amazon says this tool distinguishes the Fire TV-to-router connection from the router-to-internet connection; some compatible models also show a speed test or advanced network details. - Restart Fire TV. Unplug the device from power for 10 seconds, then reconnect it.
- Renew the Wi-Fi connection. Open Settings → Network, turn Wi-Fi off, then turn it back on.
- Forget and rejoin the network. If the connection still fails, forget the saved Wi-Fi network and reconnect by selecting it and entering the password again.
- Restart the modem and router. Unplug both and wait about one minute. Plug in the modem first and let it reconnect to the internet; then reconnect the router. Amazon’s Prime Video guidance separately recommends unplugging a modem and router for 30 seconds, so follow the instructions relevant to your symptom and equipment rather than treating one wait time as universal.
- Check whether other devices are offline. If phones, computers, and other devices also cannot get online, the issue may be a broader network outage. Check your home internet connection or contact your current internet provider before buying new equipment.
What if my Fire TV is connected but streaming still buffers?
Check the signal and the scope of the problem. If practical, move the Fire TV device and router closer together. If the Network Status tool shows that Fire TV has a weak or failed link to the router, placement or coverage is a more likely focus than app settings. If the router-to-internet link fails—or several devices are offline—check the home connection or contact your internet provider. Why won’t Prime Video play on my Fire TV?
If Network Status shows a working connection but Prime Video still will not play, treat it as a playback issue rather than repeatedly changing Wi-Fi settings. Amazon recommends checking for Fire TV software updates, restarting the device, and clearing Prime Video’s cache and data. The steps and menu labels can vary by model. How do I fix a frozen or black Fire TV screen?
Check power and the display connection before resetting the device. Amazon recommends using the included power cable and adapter, confirming that the TV is set to the HDMI input used by Fire TV, and temporarily connecting Fire TV directly to the TV if an A/V receiver or sound bar sits between them. For a frozen device, hold Select and Play/Pause together for about five seconds to force a restart. A brief black screen for a few seconds when starting or stopping 4K Ultra HD playback can be normal.

When should I factory reset Fire TV?
Use a factory reset only after the connection checks, device restart, Wi-Fi reconnection, and modem/router restart have failed. A reset is a later escalation, not the first response to buffering or a temporary connection error.
