Check the exact watch, tracker, sensor and band instructions: sweat, showering, shallow swimming and deep or fast-moving water are different exposures. A water-resistance rating is not permission to dive, use a hot tub or sauna, or ignore restrictions on a band or adhesive sensor.
Check the exact device before getting it wet
Water guidance differs among product families and sometimes between models in the same family. Find the precise model name and read its current manufacturer instructions. Then check the band or accessory separately: a water-resistant watch case does not make every attached band suitable for water.

Also distinguish a controlled water-resistance rating from permission for a particular activity. Depth, duration, movement, water pressure, chemicals, impacts and device age can all matter. Ratings such as 50 m describe test conditions, not a general recommendation to dive to that depth.
How the guidance differs by wearable
| Device or guidance | Showering | Swimming | Limits and care |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch: Series 2 and later | Apple advises avoiding showering and soapy water. | Apple says Series 2 and later can be used for shallow-water pool or ocean swimming. | Apple specifies a 50-meter rating under ISO standard 22810:2010. After swimming, lightly rinse with warm fresh water and thoroughly dry. Exercise and sweat exposure are okay. Some bands are not water resistant. |
| Apple Watch Ultra and later | Apple advises avoiding showering and soapy water. | Apple specifies a 100-meter rating under ISO standard 22810:2010 and permits specified higher-risk activities, including recreational scuba diving up to 40 m. | Follow the activity and model restrictions in Apple’s current guidance; the rating does not make every band water resistant. |
| Google/Fitbit water-resistant models | Google/Fitbit recommends removing the wearable for showers to limit exposure to soap, shampoo and conditioner, even though water-resistant Fitbit devices can be showered in. | Many models are listed as water resistant to 50 m and designed for swimming; confirm your model. | Resistance may diminish after drops, chemicals or high-velocity water. Some leather, metal and woven accessory bands should not get wet. Clean and dry after exercise or wet exposure. |
| Samsung Galaxy Watch/Fit models covered by UK guidance | Rinse soapy water off; showering is not blanket permission to expose every model or band to soap. | The named models can be used for exercise sweat and swimming pools or shallow water. Samsung excludes its 2018 Galaxy Watch from pool and sea swimming despite its IP68 rating. | Samsung describes a stationary 5ATM test in 50 metres of fresh water for 10 minutes and an IPX8 test in 1.5 m of fresh water for 30 minutes. It warns against diving, snorkeling, water skiing, surfing, fast-moving water and pressure washers. Leather and hybrid bands are not water resistant. |
| Abbott FreeStyle Libre sensor covered by Egypt FAQ | The FAQ says the sensor can be worn while bathing or showering. | The FAQ also permits swimming and exercise, subject to its stated limits. | That location-specific FAQ says not to go below 1 m (3 ft) or submerge the sensor for more than 30 minutes; it describes adhesive designed to keep the sensor in place for up to 14 days. Check local instructions for your exact sensor. |

Can you exercise or sweat while wearing one?
For Apple Watch, Apple says exercise and sweat exposure are okay. Fitbit care guidance emphasizes sensor contact without excessive tightness: “Make sure your band isn’t too tight.” For exercise, Fitbit suggests placing the wearable 2–3 finger widths above the wrist bone; after exercise, move it lower and loosen it.
Clean the device, band and skin after heavy sweating, and dry them thoroughly. If the wearable causes discomfort or irritation, loosen or remove it. Fit and skin comfort are separate from water resistance: a snug fit can help sensor contact, but pressure and trapped moisture may be uncomfortable.

Why showering can be different from swimming
Soap, shampoo and conditioner can affect seals or leave residues that irritate skin. Apple advises avoiding soap or soapy water; Google/Fitbit recommends removing its wearables for showers to minimize exposure; Samsung says to rinse off soapy water. Those instructions can differ even when a device is rated for swimming.

Salt, disinfectants, chemicals, heat and steam are further reasons not to treat “water resistant” as “safe in every wet setting.” Samsung warns that salt or disinfectants, impact, heat, sauna or steam-room exposure, and disassembly can affect protection. Apple says resistance can diminish over time, and Fitbit notes that drops, chemicals and high-velocity water can reduce it.

Fit, bands and adhesive sensors need separate checks
Watch and tracker bands
Check the material as well as the watch model. Apple identifies some bands as not water resistant, Samsung excludes leather and hybrid bands, and Fitbit flags some leather, metal and woven accessories for water. Do not assume an interchangeable band has the same water suitability as the original.
Adhesive medical sensors
For continuous glucose monitors, follow the sensor’s own manual and local product information; one brand’s limit cannot be applied to another sensor. The CDC says most CGMs are water resistant and some are fully waterproof, and that they typically need replacement every 7 to 14 days. It advises washing hands and the sensor site and letting them dry completely before application; lotion or moisturized soap can make adhesion difficult.

The CDC also says, “You can use an extra adhesive patch over your CGM to protect it while bathing or swimming.” This is general guidance, not certification that an arbitrary overpatch is compatible with a particular sensor. Check the sensor maker’s instructions for patch compatibility and application.

What to do before and after water exposure
- Identify the exact model. Check the manufacturer’s current support page or manual, including any regional instructions for a medical sensor.
- Check the planned exposure. Look for separate guidance on sweat, showering, shallow swimming, depth and duration, salt or chlorinated water, fast-moving water, diving, hot tubs and saunas.
- Inspect the band or adhesive. Confirm that the band material is suitable for water, or that an adhesive sensor and any overpatch are permitted for the activity.
- Afterward, rinse and dry as directed. Where the manufacturer advises it, use fresh water after swimming, then dry the device, band and skin thoroughly. Clean after workouts as well.
- Respond to discomfort. Loosen or remove the wearable if the skin becomes uncomfortable or irritated, and follow the manufacturer’s care advice.
